In this episode, I cover how Rome instituted their culture in Egypt including their military, path to citizenship, tax and economic policies, and the caste system. I also walk through how these impacted the exiled Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. Beginning at the end of Artaxerxes’s reign with his successor Xerxes the 2nd, through a progression of short-lived rulers. In this episode, I make my way through the 23rd, 24th, and partially through the 25th Dynasties of the 3rd Intermediate Period. Essentially ancient Egypt from 837 to 664 BC. During this period, power shifted from the northern region to Nubia, but not before a few competing rulers would try to seize the whole land. In this episode, I cover the 22nd Dynasty’s reign during the 3rd Intermediate Period. This is the period from about 945 to 720 BC. There were sporadic interactions with the Hebrews in Canaan during this period, some of which merited brief mentions in the Old Testament. So, who wrote Exodus? The traditional Jewish, and therefore Christian, view is that Exodus, along with the vast majority of the remainder of the Pentateuch, was written by Moses. One religious father went as far as to say that portions were dictated by God to Moses, who wrote it with his own tears. Religious academics, at least some of them, have proposed many different theories, several of which are discussed in this episode. Who, and more importantly what are their theories? This episode is a summary of the narrative found in Exodus Chapters 35 through 40. These chapters recount the building of the Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant, and all the fixtures and furniture found within the wall of the courtyard. We are told how the Israelites built everything to God’s exacting specifications. We also hear of the people donating the gold, silver, bronze, linen, leather, and everything else. So much so that Moses had to put a stop to it. Finally, Moses anoints and consecrates all of the items, as well as Aaron and the other priests. Next week, I’ll cover the history of the writing of the Book of Exodus.

Chapter 29 and 30 begin with God continuing to tell Moses how he is to be worshiped. Moses is told how offerings and sacrifices are to be rendered, how the altar is to be built, about a mandatory offering for essentially all adult Israelites, how to build a basin of bronze, and the formulation for both the ritual holy anointing oil and incense. In Chapter 31, God tells Moses the two men who are to build everything he has specified. Then the narrative changes direction. While Moses is still on Sinai, the Israelites build an idol. And God is furious. Moses is sent back, destroys the stone tablets God gave to him, and loses his temper, too. God then reiterates his commandments, formulates some new rules, and recarves the tablets. These are a busy few chapters. Next week, I’ll continue the summary of Exodus, starting in Chapter 35.

This episode is a summary of the narrative found in Exodus Chapters 21 through 28. Chapter 21 through 23 details many of the laws given by God to Moses. Laws concerning slavery, violence, property, rampaging oxen, restitution, breaking and entering, destroying crops, and the like. Also, laws concerning the lending of money, religious laws, three mandated festivals, In Chapter 24, Moses relays these laws to the people, and writes them down in the Book of the Covenant. It is in Chapters 25 through 28 that God tells Moses how he should be worshiped. He details the Ark of the Covenant, the Tabernacle, along with everything in it, the courtyard that will surround the Tabernacle, and the priests clothing. All in great detail. Next week, I’ll continue the summary of Exodus, starting in Chapter 29.

This episode is a summary of the narrative found in Exodus Chapters 18 through 20. Chapter 18 sees the reappearance of Moses’s father-in-law, Jethro who brings Moses’s wife Zipporah and his two sons back to the leader of the Israelites. Jethro also advises Moses on how to efficiently structure a legal system. In Chapter 19, the Israelites migrate to Mt. Sinai, where in Chapter 20 they receive a set of commandments from God. At the end of the episode, I dive into the different numbering conventions of these commandments. Next week, I’ll continue the summary of Exodus, starting in Chapter 21.

This history includes her exile with her father, Ptolemy the 12th when her older sister forcibly took the throne. Then she and her father returned, taking power back. This episode provides a summary of Genesis Chapters 42 through 45. These chapters tell the story of the two trips taken by Joseph’s brothers to Egypt in search of food. In the narrative, no new people, places, or concepts are introduced, except for the land of Goshen. I will cover the history of that place next week.

Ebla was located about a day’s walk from the modern city of Aleppo, the epicenter of the Syrian Civil War.  It was also the location where the Ebla tablets were found, a primary source for the history of Canaan. This week is the first of several concerning the Canaan and therefore the Canaanites of the Old Testament. Canaan, the region, and its people are perhaps the most mentioned ethnic group, outside of Judaism, in the Old Testament. This episode walks through the interaction of these people with Abraham and his descendants in the Pentateuch.  Next week, I will begin the wrap up the Canaanites of the Bible before covering their history as discovered by archaeologists.

Today the twelfth episode of the second chapter was published on Blubrry and is also available on iTunes. This episode is the second of two about the tower at Babel, and specifically concentrates on the confusing of tongues as found in Genesis Chapter 11. The episode explores several stories from around the world concerning the origin of the many diverse languages. Then, I look at the views of the scientific community regarding the same subject. I pull in some contemporary examples of language development and delve into what separates man from animals. Finally, I explain why the scientific view of language development will probably always remain a hypothesis, and never develop into a theory.

Also, where are the other potential resting places?  I explore other flood stories from around the globe including the Akkadian, Sumerian, and Babylonian, all from the same region and time as the Genesis story.  In addition, there are African, Hindu, Mayan, various European, Hawaiian, and Cherokee stories, among others. All of these are included since they are similar, in various ways, to the Biblical story. Next week, I’ll discuss the Table of Nations.

This episode dives into the Biblical flood story as presented in the book of Genesis. In it, the traditional misunderstandings of the story and a common misinterpretation are discussed. Also covered is the approximate date of the flood. In addition, a few possible scientific theories as to what would have caused such a great flood are examined. Finally, a brief explanation is given for a few of the items between the Creation Story and Flood Story that are not covered, such as the Land of Nod, Enoch, and the Nephilim. The Fertile Crescent, also known as the Cradle of Civilization, is explained and explored. In this episode, I explore the tablet theory, sometimes referred to as the Wiseman hypothesis concerning the authorship of Genesis. Bible Versions Summary

This episode is the last episode of the first chapter. In it, I provide a summary of the making of the three Bible versions that will be utilized in the podcast. This summary, of course, has less detail than the six previous episodes, and helps to wrap up the chapter. If you wish to skip this redundant material, and I would certainly understand, just fast forward 25 minutes. At that point, I provide an analogy that explains why I use three different versions instead of one.   Join me next week when I’ll start with the history of the Pentateuch.

The New International Version Part 2

This episode is the second of two where the history of the New International Version of the Bible is studied. The episode walks the listener the criticisms of the so-called dynamic equivalence translations methodology, generally referred to as a paraphrase. I also dive a little deeper into the use of gender neutral language. Join me next week when I’ll wrap up Chapter 1 with a quick review of the bible versions as well as an explanation, through story, of why I use 3 different versions.

This topic is part of the controversy of the NIV as well as the New Revised Standard Version. Also, the revisions and other versions that were published after the initial release are touched on.

Today the second episode of the first chapter was published on Blubrry and is also available on iTunes. This episode is the first of two where we explore the history of the King James Version of the Bible. In it, we learn why King James the First decided to authorize the version and look into the background of some of the scholars who participated in the translation. I wrap up with 15 rules established by the King for the translators.

How did the religion that was founded on the Son of Man evolve into so many churches? This podcast begins in the beginning, in Genesis and traces through history the cultural forces, the environmental factors, the economical, the technological, the societal, the political, and other influences that impacted the formation of the religion as we know it today. But, this podcast is not about theology.  It is about the forces that shaped the modern churches. I will try to stay away from principles and beliefs, and instead focus on the history. I the structure of the podcast as two pyramids stacked on each other, the bottom one wider at the base, coming to a point, and the top one inverted, with its point resting, balanced on top of the bottom pyramid, the whole structure shaped similarly to an hourglass. Where these two pyramids come together, the place where the points meet, there stands Christ. The culmination of those that came before him, and the foundation where the modern churches are built are examined in an engaging way.
