There's a lot of people relapsing right now. It's sad. But sometimes we have to fall in order to succeed. And a big part of success is the willingness and effort to get back up and try again. In this episode, Shane reads an email from friend of the show Josh, who recently relapsed, and then dives into a message named after a famous catchphrase from the late 80’s and early 90s pop culture "Ive Fallen, and I Can't Get Up". Yes, you know theres a sample, and a good message to follow.

There is nothing better than being a sober dad, I wouldn't change it for anything in the world.
That said, some days being a sober Dad is challenging to say the least, and sometimes that little voice still says Shane, how great would it be to just crack a few beers right now, tie on a healthy one and let it all just float away. It’s definitely a thought that occasionally passes through, and thats exactly what I let it do. I acknowledge it, I let it pass through, and then I tell somebody about it.
There’s many dads out there who can have a beer every now and then and be just fine. I’m talking to the everyday drinker dad, the dad who knows or doesn't know its an issue, the dad who wants to do better and be better, the dad who wants to cut back, the dad who wants to quit, but doesn't know how. So how do we become sober dads?

I wanted to lighten things up a bit this week and share some of my not so proud moments of stupidity, disgustingness and ridiculousness. Chances are if your listening to this you probably have some of your own stories of stupidity, disgustingness and ridiculousness while drinking or using drugs. This is not an attempt to glorify these charades, but more of a focused effort around how we learn to accept, forgive, redeem, and sometimes laugh at the crazy situations we sometimes find ourselves in.

What is ego? It's defined as: A person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance.
The fact is that we all have an ego to some extent. I have an ego. You have an ego. It’s just the way we are wired. The battle for me is becoming more conscious of it, and realizing that in order to have freedom and peace, I need to be completely honest with myself, recognize and admit when my own ego is starting to be a factor in any given situation I might deal with throughout the day. Today I dive into this somewhat taboo topic, and also read some emails and reviews from listeners.

How does taking things personal keep us from being at ease with ourselves and others? How are our minds separate from our hearts? Shane talks about a time when a guy cut him off and he took it personal. His mind overtook his heart and he lashed out in anger. He pulled the guy out of the van and slapped him in the face...or at least that's how Shane envisioned it. It turns out the guy may have just been in a hurry because he had to take a dump and pick his kids up at school! It wasn't personal, it usually never is.

Stacey Tickner is a hairstylist from Sacramento California. Her first experience with alcohol was at the age of 13, and her drinking career began at the age of 23. What started as just “social drinking” escalated to “problem drinking” over a 10 year period, which left her unable to moderate her own use. As the desire to stop drinking couldn’t overpower the impulse to continue, she realized that she needed help. In 2015 Stacey began to seek Recovery in various forms to aid her in her process towards a life free of consequences caused by addiction to alcohol. She has found great value in listening to Recovery podcasts and has begun a path of implementing a Buddhist approach known as Refuge Recovery.

I wanted to start today by saying life is short, and you never know when your time is gonna be up. Enjoy each day, live in the moment, laugh a lot, love a whole lot. When we leave this earth, we don’t take any of the materialistic shit that we all think is so important with us. It’s meaningless, a chasing of the wind according to Ecclesiastes. But there’s a chance we might take some of the good times, some of the laughs and some of the love in our hearts on the way up. And there’s an even greater chance, that when we choose to live a life of love and service and honor, we may encourage those who loved us, and those who knew us, to find it in themselves to live another day, striving to be just a little bit better, and love just little bit more.
I’d like to dedicate this episode to Chris from the Dopey podcast. You will be missed bro. You were brave enough to share your own struggles with the world, and in doing so, you touched lives across the planet. Your spirit rests in the peace only God can provide, but your memory on this earth will never be forgotten.
To Dave: Chris was your partner, your homie, your brother, your co-host, your friend. I hope you find comfort in the many good times and the many good memories that you guys created together both on the Dopey Podcast, and outside in your personal lives. I would encourage you to keep going man. Although I only had the pleasure of chatting with Chris a few times, I am certain he would want you to continue on and carry the legacy of the Dopey Podcast to the next chapter. After all, their are still a lot of dope fiends out there looking for a lifeline, who don’t even know yet that they’re a part of the Dopey Nation.
Much love and respect,
The Sober Guy Crew.

What do I do when I feel like shit? I have had a weird last few weeks and noticed myself drifting from my program and routine, and I could really feel it. I was feeling irritated, angry, and I think a case of the fuck its was really starting to spread like a disease throughout my small little human Shane Ramer brain. So what did I do?
10 Things to do When You Feel Like Shit:
- Get your ass up early
- First thought gratitude
- Drink a glass of water with Lemon
- Read for 10 minutes
- Pray/Meditate for 10 minutes
- Exercise (for me it was walk the dog, then go on a 30 minute run) If that counts as exercise, I've won!
- Eat some healthy shit (continue eating healthy shit throughout the day)
- Call a friend
- Go to a meeting
- End night with tea, water, reading, meditating, prayer, conversation etc.)
- Its not easy, It takes work, do your best
- It takes me being mindful
- How do I stay mindful? I do the shit that I know works!

BART is the San Francisco and surrounding Bay Area’s public transit system. In many stations and surrounding areas, you will find the lost souls that have been eaten up by addiction and mental illness. When you come across many of the BART stations and corridors connecting the transit system, what you will see may be a shock to you. You see homeless people lined up stretching the span of the corridors, many of which are active drug users actively using drugs in plain view, vomit, needles, feces, urine, and garbage that has been left behind. Some call these people Junkies, others see them as human beings who have been all but forgotten and written off to the dark side of society.
The question is, how do we solve this epidemic? 1 in 5 in California are homeless. It’s estimated that there are over 3 million people in California addicted to illegal drugs. Thats not counting the people that are addicted to “legal” prescription based drugs.

Tad Stringam grew up in a devout Mormon family. That didn't stop him from engaging in crime and drug abuse at an early age. He was in and out of treatment facilities as youth and eventually did almost 12 years state and federal prison. Tad spent many years in maximum security and the gang. Today, Tad helps others get sober through interventions with his company Awaken Industries. He is also part of a new hot springs recovery center in Desert Hot Springs that will be opening this year. His stance and evidence to support CBD and medical marijuana in recovery as a vital resource is something we should all be exploring and learning more about.

Hanna Marks grew up around the rooms of 12 step programs, and drank for the first time at age 11. This lead her on a path of alcoholism and addiction until the age of 17 where she decided to get help. Today, she is 24 and has been sober since 2011. Rich shares his passion for recovery, how he stays sober, and how he helped launch teletech.
What is teletech?
Every facility is different and will use teletech in different ways. teletech is designed to fill the void. If you do not currently have an IOP or OP program, teletech makes that possible, with ZERO upfront costs. If you do have an outpatient program, teletech allows you to offer a new service to your existing clients, making it easy for them to attend as many groups as possible, regardless of work, family, or travel schedules. With teletext every facility has the opportunity to provide care and support to each client for as long as possible.

Brian O’Shea is an interventionist and sober coach who co-founded Caring Interventions, LLC, in 2010 with partner Kathleen Butler. He has facilitated successful interventions and managed cases in 20 states. Brian gives us some insight into how families are affected by addiction and follows up with some applicable tools that can help. Brian also shares some of his own personal story battling addiction, and how he has stayed sober himself.
Brian is one of the most grateful and happiest guys I have met this year at IIR2018. He is a great example of what recovery can look like both in industry, and the sober community.

Shane reads a couple of emails, and then in honor of alcohol awareness month discusses 5 warning signs that you might have a problem with alcohol.
5 Warning Signs That You Have An Alcohol Problem
https://www.prevention.com/health/5-warning-signs-that-you-have-an-alcohol-problem
1. You’re self-medicating.
If you reach for a bottle when you're feeling anxious or blue, or as a way to cope with physical pain, see a doctor. You may need treatment for depression or an anxiety disorder.
2. You’ve started drinking more.
Think about the amount you've been drinking over the last 6 months or a year. Has it gradually (or not so gradually) gone up over time? Does it take 3 glasses of wine to experience the relaxation you once enjoyed after one? If so, your drinking may be harmful.
3. It’s always on your mind.
Do you obsess about alcohol, thinking about when you'll have your next drink? Are you thinking about drinking when you are doing other things, such as working or spending time with family? People who have a healthy relationship with alcohol don't tend to think about booze this way.
4. You have a hard time cutting yourself off.
When you set limits around alcohol, such as not drinking a few nights a week or stopping after two drinks, do you have trouble sticking to them? If you have repeatedly broken these kinds of promises to yourself, you likely need help to manage your drinking.
5. You turn into a different person.
Do you deviate from your morals and ethics or otherwise behave in reckless or thoughtless ways you wouldn't otherwise when you drink? Whether you wind up driving drunk or have little lapses, like gossiping or betraying a confidence, not acting like yourself while under the influence is a red flag.

Tate Gunning grew up in a loving home with a strong family unit. He was a star athlete in high school and accepted a baseball scholarship to Arizona State University. It was not long before Tate had a taste of the party life in college, which eventually led to him being kicked off the baseball team and losing his scholarship. What followed was a destructive and dark time for Tate to walk through. For the next fifteen years his life spiraled downhill into addiction. Finally, while living homeless, he overdosed on heroin and nearly died—this was also the experience that changed his life.
Today, Tate is 4 years clean and helps others find balance and enjoyment in recovery. He entered his life's purpose with the creation of his website, Inhouse Treatment.

John Mabry is an actor, speaker, and serves as Director of Public Outreach at
Addiction Campuses. He also hosts the “High Sobriety” Podcast. John has worked on NCIS, ER, the movie Superbad and many others. John had the all American life before a horrific car accident killed his friend and left him with his leg being amputated while attending college in Texas. John struggled with addiction, depression and PTSD for over a decade following his leg amputation. Things got significantly worse, however, after he found his brother dead from a drug overdose in his Beverly Hills home. John went from parties at the Playboy mansion to living in a trailer on the banks of the Cumberland River in Tennessee. His downward spiral reached an all-time high after he was fired by radio/TV personal finance guru Dave Ramsey as a result of his addictions. This led him to finally asking for help. John spent the next several years in multiple rehabs. The last one he went to was an Addiction Campuses facility, where things finally clicked.

I get a ton of questions about what a 12 step program is and how to work one. I'm not sure I have the answer to that, but I can share what has worked for me along the way and what I have learned. Having a sponsor and working a program has been huge for me in taking my recovery and my life to the next level, and I know it can do the same for you. All you have to do is just show up and do the work.

Former Papa Roach drummer Dave Buckner joins Sober Guy Radio to give a raw and never before heard account of what life was like before and after the band signed their first record deal which catapulted them into the worldwide spotlight. With success came the rockstar lifestyle that quickly progressed into a full blown addiction to alcohol and cocaine. During this time, Dave met and later married Mia Tyler, the daughter to legendary frontman Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. The couple eventually split, and Dave spiraled out of control. He was in and out of rehab and experienced multiple relapses. The battle between good and evil thickened, and Dave found himself hearing voices saying things like “This whole music thing is really getting in the way of your partying” and “you could probably do a lot more drugs if you didn't have to play these shows.”
The chaos and madness continued, and Dave eventually left the band temporarily for another attempt at rehab, but soon after it was decided that Dave would not return to play drums for Papa Roach. This was devastating news, and only seemed to dive Dave into deeper depression, isolation, and addiction. One night after partying, Dave overdosed and nearly lost his life. All of these events together along with a deep desire to be a better father led Dave to reflect on his life and get serious about his recovery. Today, Dave lives a life free from substance abuse. He practices prayer, meditation, and recovery through Noah Levine’s Refuge Recovery Program. His purpose is to be the light, and bring hope to the hopeless.

Todd ‘Zman’ Zalkins grew up during the Long Beach punk rock scene, where surfing and back yard parties were nothing but the norm. When Sublime first started playing shows, Todd was right there in the middle of it all, and as Sublimes success grew, Todd stayed close with the band, especially lead singer Bradley Knowell.
In 1996 After a show in Petaluma CA, the guys headed back to their hotel, and Todd was one of the last ones to see Bradley alive. Around 4 AM that morning, Bradley tried to call Todd, but Todd was passed out after a long night of partying and wouldn't wake up. The next morning, Todd got the heart wrenching news that his friend Bradley had died of a heroin overdose. Todd went on to battle his own demons and struggle with addiction. It wasn't until a near heart attack that he checked himself into a treatment facility after a 17 year run in prescription pills, cocaine and alcohol almost took his life.
Today, Todd is an interventionist and state certified Drug & Alcohol counselor (CADC). His story became the subject of the award-winning documentary film, “The Long Way Back” The Story of Todd ‘Zman’ Zalkins, which premiered at multiple film festivals. The film was picked up for worldwide distribution and is available for release on Amazon, iTunes and DVD.

Smile Now, Cry Later: Guns, Gangs and Tattoos—My Life in Black and Gray By Freddy Negrete and Steve Jones
Published by Seven Stories Press, New York
Book Description:
Pioneering black-and-gray tattoo artist Freddy Negrete was twelve years old and confined in the holding cell of a Los Angeles juvenile facility when an older teenager entered—covered in tattoos. Freddy was in awe, not just of the art, but of what it symbolized, and he wanted what this kid had: the potent sense of empowerment and belonging that came from joining a gang. The encounter drove Freddy to join La Sangra, and it didn't take long before he was a regular guest at LA County's juvenile detention facilities. By the age of twenty-one, Freddy had spent almost his whole life as a ward of the state in one form or the other.
Enthralled by the black-and-gray tattoo style that in the 1970s was confined to the rebel culture of Chicano gangsters and criminals, Freddy started inking himself with hand-poked tattoos. In a riveting narrative that takes the reader from Freddy's days as a cholo gang member to evangelical preacher to Hollywood body art guru to full-blown heroin addict, Smile Now, Cry Later is, ultimately, a testament to that spark within us all, that catalyst which gives us the strength to survive, transform, and transcend all that can destroy us.

Born in New York City and raised in Aberdeen, New Jersey, Jim Kreitler earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Dayton. He then pursued a master’s in addiction counseling from Grand Canyon University and is a Licensed Associate Substance Abuse Counselor (LASAC) in the state of Arizona. Kreitler began his own personal recovery journey in 1998. Ten years later, he retired from a 28-year career to seek his calling to help addicted people.
As a person whose life was saved by treatment and subsequent recovery, he knows both sides: the devastation of the disorder and the awesomeness of recovery. On the job, he loves interacting with patients, both current ones and those who return to share stories about their success in recovery. “I believe in everyone’s ability to recover, and I am honored to be a part of that transformation,” he says.
Married for 37 years with two adult children, Kreitler still enjoys playing softball, but he admits he takes it a little slower these days. He also likes to run, bike, swim and listen to music.
