Scared To Death

"Something was moving towards them - coming from down the hall. Carlos swore he could see something back in the shadows. Whipping their flashlights around - they DID see something. They all three saw a small, dark, evil creature quickly approaching them from no more than twenty feet away…" This weeks Scared To Death is truly unlike any other episode! Dan and Lynze welcome a VERY special guest, Mustafa Gatollori from A&E's Ghost Hunters!  The episode begins with Dan sharing the tale of the Worley Hospital in Pampa, Texas. The iconic Worley Hospital has been abandoned for many years after originally being built in 1929 to accommodate the fast growing oil town. Two cousins decided to buy the building with hopes of turning it into a B&B. Those hopes and dreams come to a halt when both cousins begin to experience paranormal activity. Dan and Lynze will talk to Mustafa about how he and his team explored the hospital to try and help the cousins out.  But before that happens, Dan has another frightening encounter in the Worley Hospital to share. Three young friends break into the old building after hearing tales of its haunted hallways for years. They don't last very long. Between the rats and the faint giggling of someone who isn't really there, the friends get their fill and make a run for it.  After chatting with Mustafa, Lynze takes us back to our usual content. She has two stories this week. The first story is told by a fan who thought she and her friends were just making up an imaginary friend only to find out they may have brought something else to life. Supposedly, these are women who sell their souls to the devil to gain super natural powers but the price is that you become an owl. "After having spent a night in room 314, a doctor and his wife mentioned an encounter with something paranormal at checkout one morning. The doctor had been awakened several times by a gentle tickling sensation on his feet in the middle of the night. In his sleepy state he was convinced that the comforter or the sheets were somehow responsible for the sensation of something lightly brushing his feet. But then, the final time it occurred, he looked down to distinctly see a little girl tickling his feet. He said she smiled and then vanished." Could you spend a night in most haunted city in the United States, Savannah, Georgia? Could you spend a night in the most haunted city at a haunted hotel? If you said yes, congratulations, you are 100% Creeper. Dan goes old school with two tales of haunted houses, back to back, in Savannah. The first story takes place at The Hampton Lillibridge House, which partially set the stage for Tale of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. A really bizarre story with many deaths that lead up to one final, incredibly questionable death. Then, we stay put in Savannah to hear about the children that haunt The Marshall Hotel. A beautifully restored hotel that seems to have a lot more to offer than just a place to rest your head. Be wary of rooms 214,314 414!! Lynze also goes back to her horror roots with a traditional story, telling the tale of a haunted house in Scotland. A young child has multiple encounters within their home but everything seemed friendly. That is, until one day, when the young child finds themself face to face with a floating being. After Scotland, we explore the idea of a new kind of spoop. Do you think shadow animals are possible? If shadow people are real, then why not a shadow dog? "Fast forward about a year and one night… when you were just a little baby, I overheard your mom and the guy in charge talking about how ‘now the sacrifice needed to be made. And you were mentioned. Long story short, you were supposed to be the payment made to whatever we’d brought into the world that night. This guy was telling your mom that it was ‘almost time,’ and your mom…. she seemed… OKAY with it all." In episode 79, Dan has a story based on some lost footage and a story about sleeping with the dead.  In story one, we hear the sad and tragic story of Peter, a young boy who loses his parents and is sent to live with his grandparents. Upon turning 16, Peter's grandparents give him six tapes that contain footage he was not prepared for. Peter's father had prerecorded a series of 6 tapes that contain very important instructions for Peter to follow, in order to keep him safe. In each tape, Peter must recite a prayer for protection. Or is it? Are his dad's intentions simple and pure: leave a message for his son from beyond the grave? Tune in to hear Peter's side of the story.  Dan's second tale is a well-documented and bizarre story. When a man's wife passes away unexpectedly, he isn't quite ready to say goodbye. Is he possessed by the spirit of his wife? Has she compelled him to ignore his vow of till death do us part so that they might be together... forever? A doppelgänger double feature wraps up the back half of the show. Lynze attempts to get under Dan's skin by talking about two very different but very disturbing instances of possible doppelgänger encounters. In her first story, she tells the tale of a young girl and her grandmother both witnessing and talking to her younger brother. When he vanishes into thin air, both assume he's playing games. As the evening progresses and the young boy is still unable to be located, fear sets in. It's only after the boy's mother confirms that the young boy is at his father's that both grandma and granddaughter come to realize that they may have encountered something not of this world.  Was there a glitch in the matrix or did a doppelgänger appear before a man, posing as his wife? When the young husband wakes up to see his wife scurrying off to the restroom, he doesn't think much of it, until he notices her stilted stride. Upon further investigation, his wife is nowhere near the bathroom. How did she get to the bedroom without him knowing? Was she there all along? "She’d later tell investigators, who were still trying to catch Phillip’s killer, that she was hearing noises coming from inside the walls of the home. Scratching, rattling noises. She sometimes could hear what sounded like someone breathing. Or someone whispering. The police came over to investigate…. and found nothing. A few days later, the nurse called them again.  This time, she reported seeing an apparition on the back stairs that “chattered its teeth at her” before completely disappearing into the darkness." Dan and Lynze keep the scares coming in this 78th episode of Scared To Death! Dan has the strangest story to kick off episode. It's not what you think and the twist at the end just about sent Lynze over the edge. This story will give you a whole new set of fears. That sound in your attic, might not be what you think it is. And that thing you thought you saw out of the corner of your eye, might not be an apparition. In Dan's second tale, a terrible tragedy seems to be the base for a very haunted former school building in Canada. The building has since been transformed into modern condo's. Are the ghosts of the past haunting the current residents? Lynze brings three juicy tales to her side of the episode. In her first story, we explore the idea that ghosts can be jealous and interfere in our most intimate moments. The story of Brenda and Doug is one that makes you really reconsider your most vulnerable moments. In her second story, Lynze gets all together too excited to try to scare Dan with one helluva creepy clown story! Oh, it's so juicy and will have you hiding all of your dolls. Lastly, in story three, a strange situation in which three people confirm the same thing, never knowing about the other's experiences. "They say that under the ruins atop the former basement of an abandoned church in Stull, Kansas  - there exists a sealed staircase that is almost impossible to find. And you don’t want to find it.  If you do, and you follow that staircase down far enough on the wrong night, legend has it you can reach one of the seven mouths to Hell itself. And if you do, good luck getting back out…" Dan tells two really amazing stories this week! To kick off the episode, we are off to sunny Los Angeles to the very famous Griffith Park. Is the park haunted? Cursed? Dead bodies have been found on the park grounds somewhat regularly and frequent tragedies lead us to believe that the grounds are a unique place to find many spoopy incidents, but can it be proved? What if you saw a Merry-Go-Round moving on its own, late into the night, with no explanation? Would that be proof enough? Listen to part one of this episode to find out! Next up, Hellmouth! What?! Did you know there are supposedly 7 mouths of Hell? This was all news to Dan and Lynze as they explored the story of Stull, Kansas. Does the Devil himself appear here on Halloween? Is this a portal to Hell? If you find this supposed portal, time moves at supernatural speed and you enter into some kind of trance. The tale of The Watcher just about put Lynze over the edge. Dan told a very well documented story that would not traditionally fall under the paranormal category but then again, maybe it does. A couple buys a new home, their dream home in fact, only to find out that someone else does not want them to be there. Or do they want them to be there so they can get the "young blood" of their children? The story is terrifying, overwhelming and will add a new reason to be scared. In the second story, Dan goes back to a more traditional story as he shares the tale of a possible shadow person. When a family is certain that they all live in a haunted house, it's really hard to ignore the possibility of a shadow person that can be confirmed by family members and friends alike.  Lynze has two stories that somehow feel connected, carrying on the theme of shadow people and what lurks in the dark. In story one, she tells us about a truck driver who has an odd situation arise at his home, after a long day at work. Was that his wife? What happened to his dog? Then, the next story will have you wondering more about attachments. "And I started to fall asleep. And then, when I was about half-asleep, laying on my side facing the window, it felt like someone crawled into bed behind me. As I started to wake up and roll over, not really expecting to see anyone, I felt hands on my upper back and I started to panic. I suddenly thought that someone else really was in my bed with me. My mind raced, wondering how they could have gotten in so quietly? Were they already hiding in the closet or something when I entered the room? Was I going to die?" The Salem Witch Trials, kind of. Dan explores the spirits who may still be hanging around, all these years later. He starts off with plenty of history about Salem and the Witch Trials, which is really quite fascinating. The locale of the story takes place in the Joshua Ward House AKA The Merchant Hotel, where you can tempt fate and stay the night. Would you dare to stay there and risk being strangled by a ghost? From Salem, Dan takes us down to Georgia for a more salacious, sexy, steamy story about the Corpsewood Manor. If you let you kids listen to this show and you have any qualms about sex, you might want to skip this one! We hear the story of Dr. Charles Scudder and his bizarre departure from his "normal" life and the hedonistic life he seeks. A chicken coup, a sex dungeon and wild orgies seem to be at the center of this bizarre story where true crime and horror tales collide.  During Lynze's portion of the episode, she lighten's things up a tiny bit with a creepy but funny story about a possible cult sighting. The story itself takes place in the deep woods of Atlanta, Michigan which may conjure up memories of Dice Rd. What happens when you mix booze, teenagers and cultiness? For her second story, we travel to Hawaii. Lynze reveals that she thinks Hawaii might be one of the most spiritual places in the US, due to the Polynesian culture. Also, she wonders if Pearl Harbor and the mass casualties have caused additional activity here. "Eight HUMAN skulls. I froze with fear at the sight of them. I’d never seen actual human skulls up that close before. Who puts them on a gate like that? Why? And now I’d have to climb over them." Thanks to Dan, we all have something new to fear. Have you ever heard of the Bangladeshi Nishi? We sure as hell hadn't and now we wish we didn't know what it was. Dan takes us on two really amazing journeys this week. We start in Bangladesh for the story of an encounter, or maybe 2, with a Nishi. If you don't know.... well now you know. "A few days later, after not seeing anyone enter or leave the house since the murders, a friend and neighbor of the Congeliers entered the home through a back door after knocking and getting no answer in the front. And he encountered the terrible smell of flesh beginning to rot. And he found Lyda sitting in a rocking chair… covered in blood… holding the severed heads of both Charles and Essie… singing them a lullaby. " Dan shares the long history and supposed haunting of The House The Devil Built, also known as the Congelier Mansion or The House on Ridge Avenue. No matter what you call it, it's downright creepy. And is it even true? Did the house ever exist and sustain multiple murders followed by multiple hauntings or was it all, simply, folklore. Listen and decide for yourself. Dan's second story explores the very terrifying topic of Dopplegangers. While we know this subject matter freaks Dan out, he really gets under Lynze's skin with it this week. What if a Doppleganger could actually impersonate you and cause havoc in your life? How would you ever prove it wasn't you? Lynze's side of the show is a little bit different this week as she takes on three listener stories that all explore the mystery of what happens when we die, what's on the other side and how do you even know what to think of it all? We are off to Australia, if you believe it's real, for the story of a very famous haunted cave, the Jenolan Caves. Many of us go on tours while we are on vacation. What if you went on a tour and you were the only person who could see an extra tourist, also on the tour? As we listen to Dan share the hauntings of this cave, you will be left to wonder how such a beautiful place could give you such a scare. Keeping in theme with adventures you might go on, Dan attempts to make the woods and hiking a NO-GO for Lynze. In an undisclosed location, there is a "man" with no face, making people disappear. Is he real? Are people disappearing? What kind of control does he have over them that keeps people in the woods for days. Listen in and decided if you still want to spend time in the woods. In Lynze's half of the show, she gives us three stories this week. In the first story, CC tells how a previous episode (69) sends her into a bit of tailspin, reminding her of the horrors of a shadow man or hat man she thought she had dealt with in her younger years. Was it a dream? Her imagination? Or, was he really there? In the second story, Lynze tells us about three cousins who have two back to back experiences. Both instances are bizarre and unnerving. If more than one person experiences something, does that make it more true? Finishing out the episode is a less scary tale but spoopy, none the less. "The girl then wiped her hair from out of her face and revealed those two pitch-black spots where her eyes should’ve been. She smiled a large open-mouth smiled and revealed teeth that looked predatory - too sharp to be human. Not fangs, exactly, but close. She started to walk towards Nitara and Fatima. Too quickly. “Will you let me in?” she asked,  “I need to come inside. To play with you.” Why does Dan do this to Lynze? He knows that the Black Eye Kids are her biggest and most upsetting fear. Lynze is a complete caregiver and knows that if a child was asking her for help, she would never be able to turn them away. In story one of two, Dan explores more of the history of BEK's before diving into this eery tale of a possible encounter with a BEK in a European hotel. Staying abroad, Dan takes us over to Scotland for the tale of the haunted Glamis Castle. What secret is lurking in the hidden passageways of this ancient castle? Lynze tells one, long, harrowing tale of a FOR SURE haunted house in Colorado. When the new owners move in, all is well for quite some time. There was only one warning sign on moving day- all of the windows were lined with foil, from the inside out. After two years of small but harmless signs of someone or something being in the family home, things escalate. "Some believe a less-than five mile stretch of this road either is - or has become - some kind of a paranormal corridor or conduit. An area where, for whatever reason, it’s easier for spirits to access or stay." What is going on on Dice Road, in Michigan? Dan takes us all on a terrifying journey, telling us three tales that all take place on Dice Road. There is the tale of the Pommeraning Family, who seem to be having a bit of trouble in their home. Many people are witness to the paranormal activity but no one seems to be able to find the source. Is it real? Where is it coming from? Why is it happening? "Know that - this is a dangerous ritual. To go inside the box is to risk bringing something back with you when you leave. Something that may change you forever. Going into the box may prove to you that there are absolutely worlds beyond this one - but it may also - supposedly - destroy you." Have you ever heard of The Devil's Toy Box? A truly intense and terrifying way to contact the other is the basis for Dan's first story this week. He takes us on a journey of three friends who dabble in the occult and find that it's much scarier than they ever thought.  Keeping up with the tradition that Dan and Lynze set up last year when Dan told the tale of the Smee, we’ll go back a little further to the Victorian Era of England when ghost stories were extremely popular in the UK, and again, when they were most popular around Christmas. Christmas ’twas the season for horror in the mid and late 19th century for many British Empire nations. Stick around until the end of the story which will leave you wondering who is who?! Lynze mixes it up a bit this week with three tales instead of two. In her first story, we hear the account of a one soldier seeing another soldier in Iraq, in the middle of the night. Or did he? What exactly is out there in the former battlegrounds?  In her second, and very quick story, we explore a possible sleep paralysis. As Lynze tells the story, we think it's all of the usual marking of sleep paralysis but then, she revels one final fact that changes it all.  Wrapping up the holiday episode, a cautionary tale of things that go bump in your house. "Recognizing that something abnormal was happening, Steven grabbed his tablet and began filming his wife.  Several priests would later watch this video and described what they witnessed as follows: “You humans have your own sense of time,” Louisa told Steven at one point in the video. “I have plenty of time. I have all the time in the world." She then shifted into a staccato whisper.  “It’s your wife I want,” she said “not only her body, but her soul.” Dan's stories this week are top notch! A really big, scary episode! We start off in Germany for the tale of the Weiße Frauen, AKA, The White Woman of Bavaria! She is rather sneaky and will have you looking over your shoulder. After that, Dan tells a tale so haunting that Lynze actually started to cry during the episode. Louisa Muskovits is a woman living in Tacoma in 2018 who was, or possibly still is, being oppressed OR possessed by an evil spirit. The story may not make you jump out of your skin but it sure will make you think twice about the sound of footsteps. Dan takes us all on a journey to two places that Dan and Lynze love or dream of visiting! Kicking the show off is the tale of the St. James Theater in Wellington, New Zealand. Famed Film Director, Peter Jackson backs up the theories about the "Wailing Woman" who lives here. The story has a big build up to a stage hand possibly being harmed by this malevolent spirit. The "Wailing Woman" isn't the only spirit living in the St. James Theater. Find out how many spirits might be here, the good and the bad, and a little bit of history in this tale. For the second story, we jump over to NOLA, one of Dan and Lynze's most favorite places on earth, to explore one the most famous, most dark tales of Madame Delphine LaLaurie. While you may know the story of Madame LaLaurie, you surely haven't heard this tale of a spirit from the home trying to reach out to the living! Lynze has her usual two tales this week. Her first story touches on one of Dan's biggest fears: Mirrors. Can you make contact with the other side, via a mirror, even when you aren't trying? Can a spirit convince you to do something you normally wouldn't do? And what if the person being tricked is just a child? Check out story one for this spoopy tale. In Lynze's second tale, you are going to want to hang on until the very end. Sure, she might just be sharing an odd experience of a possibly haunted house but what if it were happening to you and what if you could hear it but you couldn't see it? Dig into this tale with us! The tales that Dan weaves this week are top notch. During story number one, we explore the idea of a haunted car ride. What would you do if there was another passenger in a car but you were the only person who could see the passenger? And what if you were in a cab? Or an Uber? What would you do? In story number two, we go to the famous haunting of The Whaley House. A long haunted and well known haunted home, a home that was once called The Most Haunted House in America. In the second half of the show, Lynze takes a literal deep dive into a potentially haunted underwater cave in Vortex Springs. Was something trying to connect with a diver? Was there a warning of danger coming from the other side? In her second story, Lynze shares a fan story about a haunted doll. If you could not prove that a doll was haunted, would you get rid of it? On today's show, Dan takes us all to one of the strangest places we have ever gone on Scared to Death, The Island of the Dolls. Why in the world would a man just up and leave him family to live, alone and secluded, on an island that he then COVERS in dolls? After years of living on the island, why does this man turn up dead? What have others discovered when visiting The Island of the Dolls? Are the dolls alive? Possessed? Is it all in their imaginations? From Mexico City, Dan takes us to Colorado. "Just then on the opposite side of my room, I watched this dark, smoky, human-like form crawl up my wall, each step it took made a tsssss (like water on a frying pan sound) and smoke was coming from each hand and foot connection with my wall." This week Dan takes from England to Malaysia, such a fun show! To kick off the show, Dan shares an old but interesting tale from Raynham Hall. Did a pair of photographers catch The Brown Lady (it's a reference to her dress!) ascending the stairs? Can it really be proven? What happens when its been centuries of people seeing a ghost; does it make it more possible. Lynze really buys into the idea that this ghost is real. From there, we pop over to Malaysia to learn the folkloric tale of the penanggalan- a bodyless woman whose insides trail behind her as she attacks her victims. Is she real? Listen as two very logical people have a strange and frightening encounter with what they believe to be a penanggalan. "They continued to hear the sounds of footsteps behind them. Getting louder. Gaining on them. Their only source of hope was the soft breeze constantly flowing through from the opposite end. The cool, dry air. Finally - they reached a t-shaped intersection. Which way to turn?" In another fun week of spoopy fun, Dan shares two incredible stories. Our first story takes us to Oregon, just outside of Portland. Two friends take an adventure into a supposedly haunted mental hospital that is home to tunnels that connect to another abandoned building. Do they encounter an angry entity? A supposedly haunted island off the coast of Italy, Poveglia takes us on a journey that makes us question, what CAN a spirit, a doctor no less, do to us, from the other side. A few friends travel to the island in search of fun and get so much more than they bargained for. In Dan's second story of the week, we travel to China to talk about a possible/probably alien abduction. "He ended up taking his sword to her face. He sliced open her cheeks from the corners of her mouth to her ears, and then he asked her, “Who will think you’re beautiful now?” A quote from the first of Dan's two stories this week. This first tale takes us to Japan for a haunting story about the Slit-Mouthed Woman. Once you see her, you are almost guaranteed to die. Or are you? Is there a way to avoid being drawn in by this mysterious woman and losing your life to her? The second story takes us back to Idaho! We are going to Idaho Falls once again. What is going on down there? Is this part of Idaho particularly haunted? Let's find out. For the second half of the show, Lynze shares the occasional three fan stories to switch it up. First, we share some encounters a woman claims she and her family experienced shortly after moving into a Pocatello apartment. Then, we head to Pocatello High School, were security camera footage emerged in 2014 of what appears to be a shadowy humanoid entity. And we share a tale of a former high school custodian encountering something terrible in the band room. For our first tale today, we explore the Cajun legend of the Cauchemar, a specific, demonic spiritual presence believed by some living in and around certain parts of Louisiana to harm them after it invades their dreams. And for the second story, we head to Georgia for tales to stories revolving around the first haunted body of water we’ve talked about so far here on Scared to Death - Lake Lanier. A quote from today's first tale, the story of “The Rake.” The Rake seems to be some type of cryptid allegedly lurking primarily in the Northeastern US. After going over several supposed encounters, we head to a creepy little patch of forest just southwest of Birmingham, England known as the Hagley Wood to look at an encounter two young men had with some mysterious robed figures that may be connected to a 1940s murder. This early 19th century Tennessee story about a malicious, spiteful spirit rumored to have antagonized the Bell family and many others around them for several years is one of America's most famous paranormal horror accounts. The first story is an encounter with New Mexico's La Mala Hora - the "Evil Hour" also known as "The Evil One," a spirit you don't want to drive past at a crossroads. The first is the story of a Florida teacher who in 2012, became convinced that some of her teenage students were possessed by demons, so she took them on a very ill-advised and highly illegal field trip. The second story is that of Los Feliz’s supposedly haunted murder mansion where on the night of December 6th, 1959, in Dr. Harold Perelson struck his wife and daughter with a hammer.
