#MenTellHealth: How Religion And Mental Health Intersect
45 perc 51. rész EO

#MenTellHealth is back! Alema Harrington and Koz talk about how religion can be an issue when trying to make changes in your life that include breaking addiction habits, depression, or even other mental health issues. The problem is that for some people it's a cornerstone. Unfortunately praying, and talking to God doesn't help everyone to break the cycle of mental health issues.

The question isn't one that some people feel comfortable asking. Does having faith mean that you can't get medical help with your mental health issues.

#Mentellhealth Questions
38 perc 43. rész TA

The guys talk about the Super Bowl. Koz isn't a Patriots fan but rooted for them. Alema went for the Eagles because of his son being a fan for years back when a lot of BYU players were playing for the Eagles.

Alema does pre and post game for the Utah Jazz on television and they are currently on a winning streak. He talks about how much better everything is when the Jazz are winning. It makes his job easier and has even talked to business owners who say that business is better when the Jazz are winning. That is because it elevates their emotions when they are winning. For example, when the Jazz beat the Warriors by 30, fans felt like they won the game and they weren't even playing.

Koz has become a fan of teams in Houston because of what they went through this past year due to the Hurricane. But everything seemed better for a short period when the Houston Astros won the World Series.

The first #Mentellhealth question comes in from a listener. He is a sports drinker, which is when he watches his sports teams and his drinks while watching them. He also had a gambling problem but didn't have problems gambling until he was drinking a lot. Koz and Alema advise him to be very careful. That if he is a gambler in recovery that he needs to go back to a meeting.

The second #Mentellhealth question comes in from a listener that is having a hard time with her husband always helping his mom and going to her all the time. The mother-in-law lost her husband recently and is going through a hard time but it's been tough on the marriage because he isn't there for his wife. The advice that was given by Koz and Alema to her is to have the mother-in-law attend a support group that is specific to this issue of grieving after losing a loved one. Also, she has to be understanding to a point as well as the husband.

The last #Mentellhealth question for Koz and Alema comes from a father whose son is being some what bullied at school. The school hasn't done much about it and the father is tired of it. The guys gave a couple of tips for the dad like keep on talking to the school administration until it gets handled. They have a lot of problems each day so stay proactive. The other is to maybe try out a Brazilian Ju-Jitsu class. It is purely for self defense.

Renaissance Ranch is giving back to the community. They held two free events in Utah, where families of those affected by addiction could come out and ask questions to a panel of experts.

David Kozlowski is holding an event with Unified Fire Department that will teach parents how to deal with what the youth is going through. It's on March 8th.

#Mentellhealth question comes in from a listener who had an affair about seven years ago. He and his wife worked through it and are still together but whenever an argument comes up, that comes up with it and he just wants to move on.

The way to look at it is that if he is still with his wife having an affair 7 years ago, you are probably doing something right. His work continues to be on being able to be okay whether his wife forgives him or not.

Tell her that you are going to make up for it but you don't need her to forgive you.

A #Mentellhealth question comes in from a listener who is trying to help his son with Asperger's become an independent man.

If it is in his best interest to move out and become an independent person and if he is capable of doing that. Then the father should demonstrate his support. Another thing that the father can do is model for him, take him driving, share your insecurities and struggles and open up a dialogue.

The main thing to help his son is to connect and relate.

How to Motivate Someone Besides Criticizing
8 perc 39. rész TA

Anybody have any guilty pleasures?  Koz does. One of them is a couple of podcasts that he listens to.  He was a guest caller, he randomly called him on his personal phone.  The podcast is "This past weekend." The host is open with his pornography addiction.  He takes calls from average guys and one guy called in and he and his wife made an agreement to both lose weight.  He lost the weight but his wife didn't.  Now he is not sexually attracted to his wife.  Now he looks at a lot of pornography.  He doesn't know what to do because he didn't want to bring it up to his wife.  He was sad because he isn't attracted to his wife and mad that she didn't lose the weight and he doesn't feel good about looking at pornography.

Koz called in to the show.  He was giving a lot of advice and was talking fast.  The host chose Koz as one of the feedback advice to give to the guy.  Think about her insecurities of being overweight.  Women's insecurities are way worse than men.  Koz's suggestion is that it is easier to give compliments for what they have done rather than criticizing them.

Koz had a friend who had a bad attitude with him.  He approached him and gave him a compliment and thanked him for being patient with him.

Koz was a sophomore in college and had a problem with a girl that he was dating so his other friend was talking to him.  Koz kept complaining about the girl he was dating.  He was given advice to just tell her how he feels.  It was something that he needed to hear.

If you have had friends tell you what you should do, you will sometimes remember some advice that you have received in the past.  That’s how you best friend yourself.  It might take some practice but the next time you are in a situation, just remember what your best friend would say.  Your best friend will usually bring you back down to earth and keep you in check.

This is How you Handle a Highly Emotional Situation
7 perc 37. rész TA

Have you ever listened to someone and as they are talking you realize they are crazy but you still try to understand.  Then it turns around and you feel crazy about it?  You waste a lot of energy and worry and try to figure out what they meant what they said and so on.  This is called "Don't try to make sense of nonsense." This was inspired by a seminar that Koz gave about a specific mental health disorder called "Borderline Personality Disorder."  It's basically Bipolar disorder on steroids.  Most people know what bipolar is and even use it as a joke.  But it is a very serious mental health issue.  They usually have lots of talents and great things about them but they have a hard time with deep relationship issues because of the fear of being abandoned.

Think for one moment about any sort of relationship in your life.  Then a person behaves in a way that doesn't make sense to you. But you don't want to fight with this person.  When someone is not making sense with their behavior, take a moment and say to yourself "I need to stop trying to make sense of this nonsense." When you say that to yourself, it allows you to back up and have realistic expectations of yourself and the person.  If the person is highly emotional (which is usually the case).  If you are trying to make sense of their emotions, they likely won't have the same emotions the next day, or even 15 minutes from now.  You can get trapped in an argument with someone.  If you just gave it more time, then the person will have cooled down their emotions.  Now you don't need to use all of your energy on nonsense.

How Parents Can Help Their Teenager Succeed in School and Life
28 perc 34. rész TA

It's Koz knows!  Are you familiar with the "Parent/Teen Partnership Agreement."  If you are dealing with a teenager not listening and going through difficult times.  Maybe the grades are down.  Most parents are not okay with that.  They look at the worst case scenarios. The philosophy is based off a contingency agreement.  If the parent and teen agree on something and both accomplish the agreement, you become successful.

How you work the partnership.  It is better to involve a counselor.  But come up with three things that you want the other person to do.  i.e. chores need to be done, certain GPA.  Also, the teenager comes up with some ideas that they want the parents to do.  But keep it simple and measurable.  Some things that are not good ideas is to have your teenager be respectful and honest.  We all know that it is difficult with a teenager.  If things are not being accomplished in the agreement.  You don't just end the agreement.  But don't give a consequence in the heat of the moment.

With school, a parent should not track their kids assignments being turned in on time.  Put in the agreement that you check the grades one day a week.  If it isn't done, rather than a consequence, you get something taken away.  Allow a little flexibility too.  Be sure that you are calm when an part of the agreement isn't followed.

It is a lot easier for teenagers to come up with three things for parents.  i.e. Parents don't constantly check on teen about getting school assignments done, not constantly checking on the teen.  Unless the agreement states otherwise.  But the key for parents is to give their teenager enough space and freedom.

Remember this is all about learning to be discipline and to be successful.  Also, give them opportunities to make money.  Teenagers don't ask for an excessive amount of money.  Parents shouldn't have anything related to religion or specific things from the past.

Also, make a list of three things that your teenager will go without when they have a consequence.  i.e. 24 hours without cell phone, one day without hanging out with friends, can't borrow the car.  But leave it up to the teenager.

Ultimately, this agreement helps your teenager get ready to become an adult.  It helps them to be responsible and it helps them grow and progress.

When you have someone in you your life who is struggling with addiction, you have a front row seat to something that is really painful to watch. The Just Koz Show's host, Koz, talks about how all too often when we watch our loved ones in pain, it can directly coincide with pain signals that you have. Empathy and compassion are absolutely necessary for the person struggling, and for the entire support group. Koz talks about how to improve some of these situations.

Koz Knows: This Basic Information Will Help You Understand The Effect Of Pornography
23 perc 23. rész

You need to understand a few things about pornography.  Koz deals with it a lot in his work.  And there are a lot of misunderstandings.

Pornography is an intimacy issue.  People that do not have intimate connections (sexual, spiritual, emotional) can suffer a lot with pornography.  Pornography has a unique effect on people who are lonely because it temporarily makes them feel good.

It is very possible to develop a serious addiction to pornography.  How do you know if it's an addiction, or a habit or just an activity?  Koz looks at how it's affecting your life.  Is it harming your relationships?  Is it making work difficult or jeopardizing your career?  That's one way you can see if someone is addicted.

It's true, this is a case by case thing.  Different people have different reactions to social media, alcohol, or any other thing that we know can be addictive.

Koz Knows: Break Up... DON'T Blow Up!
12 perc 22. rész

Koz does a lot of work with people struggling in relationships.  In this episode he talks about good communication in a relationship, especially when it's time to end it.

He tells the story of a young man struggling with a girlfriend who keeps going out socially with her "guy friends".

He's uncomfortable with it, and she's defensive about it.  It's wrecking their relationship.

Sometimes people who want out of a relationship will try to blow up the relationship instead of just leaving.  So they will create situations that force the issue.  Cheating is an example of behavior that may be designed to blow up the relationship.

It's better to be honest with your partner about where you are in the relationship.  It's hard.  You can be in love with someone but still know the relationship has expired.

Koz Knows: The FRIEND ZONE- How To Get Out And STAY Out
8 perc 21. rész

You didn't get put in the "Friend Zone", you put yourself in the "Friend Zone".

Koz has helped a lot of people recovering from the friend zone.  The danger you face in the friend zone is you can trick yourself into thinking you have a relationship with someone who just thinks you're friends.

The friend zone is the result of poor communication.  You need to establish your intention in the relationship.  Tell this person that you are interested in pursuing a relationship with them.  Otherwise, you may just become a frustrated friend.

It's hard to be this direct with people, but the person will really respect you for being forthright and honest.  Maybe that will help them see you as relationship material.

Koz Knows: Dating Requires Good Boundaries

Koz gives a lot of relationship guidance.  He often works with people who are starting to date again after divorce.  When you're making a new start, it's important to not fall back into old habits.  If you want to meet the right person, do things that will help you find that person.

A lot of people go back to the techniques that delivered the wrong partners in the past.

Make sure you are clear about what your expectations are.  Prospective partners should know exactly what you want and do not want.  Then it's easy to know if the relationship will work.

You'll also be respected for being up front and honest.  Both you and your dates can avoid feeling deceived.

The listener has lost a sibling and empathizes with a friend who recently lost her sibling.  It's coming up on the one year anniversary of her friend's loss, and she wants to if she should reach out.

The holiday is a tricky time for someone suffering from a recent loss.  Koz recommends keeping it simple.  Texting is okay.  Let them know you're thinking of them and that you have a similar experience.  Make sure they don't feel pressured to respond.  That pressure just adds to their burden.  Make the invitation open.

If you promise to check in again later, make sure you follow through.  Don't promise then bail.  That happens all the time with people who grieve.  There's lots of support early, then it fades.  Stick with it but keep it open and pressure- free.

Koz Knows: Do This If You Can't Be With Your Children At Christmas
5 perc 18. rész

Koz takes a request from a listener.  She's in her second year after her divorce and her first Christmas without her kids.  This is all she can think about and she's now over eating, drinking too much, and is neglecting herself.  What can she do?

Koz knows divorce.  He's been there and he knows how difficult it is.  He recommends a change of perspective.  Start a special tradition for the years your children are not with you for Christmas.  That will help give the holiday meaning and purpose when your children are not present.

Missing your children at Christmas is a time to reaffirm how much you love them.  That doesn't have to bum you out, but get you excited to see them again.

Koz Knows: Social Media Feels Good... Here's Why That Can Be A Problem
13 perc 11. rész

Koz knows how attractive social media can be.  It can be validating and fun.  But there are a lot of pitfalls as well.

Doesn't it sometimes seem fake?  Instagram filters can't fake happiness.  Facebook can't help you be happy if you're not.

Even though "likes" or re tweets on Twitter can provide some immediate satisfaction, it's not a substitute for real life happiness.

Koz recommends this self assessment:  Why are you posting?  Are you doing it for the high?  If you do that too often, you can become addicted to it.  Our brains are not set up to get so many rewards for doing so little.
