The last couple of months have been stressful to say the least and it feels like tension is mounting as we get closer to Election Day. To help try and make sense of what’s been happening, I’m joined today by my colleague and soror, Dr. Riana Elyse Anderson. Dr. Anderson and I discussed the impact the stress of the past couple of months has had on us, offered some perspective about why many of us may feel exhausted with the current political climate, and offers some tips on how to take care of ourselves so that we can keep going.

Bipolar disorders are among the most commonly misunderstood disorders when it comes to mental illness. There is still a lot of confusion about how this disorder presents and it’s also very often misdiagnosed. So we wanted to take some time to clear up some of the confusion and provide you with some accurate information about what a bipolar disorder can look like. For this conversation I was joined by Psychiatrist Dr. Valdesha DeJean. She and I talked about the symptoms of both Bipolar I and Bipolar II disorder, some of the treatment options typically suggested, the concerns related to creativity and medication, how to support a family member who’s been diagnosed, and she answered some community questions.

Last week we talked about some of the incredible benefits we experience from being connected to nature and you heard a little about how this connection has often been damaged in our community for lots of different reasons. Today we’ll be chatting about the ways the Black community has been disconnected from nature and the impact it has. For this conversation I was joined by J. Phoenix Smith, MSW. She and I chatted about her practice of liberation ecotherapy, how she combines all of her experiences in working with clients, how the trauma to the land shows up in our experiences, and of course she shared some of her favorite resources if you want to dig in more.

If your Instagram feed looks anything like mine, for months you’ve probably been seeing tons of beautiful sisters in their homes surrounded by lots of luscious green plants. It seems like many of us have found solace in plants and other connections to nature recently. We wanted to dig into what’s driving this for us so we found two experts to share about their work and how we can heal through nature.
Beth Collier is in private practice as a Nature Allied Psychotherapist and writes on nature, health and race. She specializes in working with relational trauma in our connections with people and nature. Dr. Jennifer Roberts, an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology at the University of Maryland School of Public Health in College Park joined me to discuss her research which focuses primarily on the impact of our built environments and some of the ways programs are being developed to improve our access to nature within our city environments, including Medical prescriptions for Nature and other outdoor activities.

We started this conversation last week when I shared a few questions for you to check in with yourself about your mental health. We know that our experiences of sexuality are as varied as we are and wanted to spend some time today digging into what it means to affirm your identity as a Queer person. For this conversation I was joined by Mychelle Williams, LPC. Mychelle and I chatted about what it might look like to explore your sexuality, some of the challenges Queer Black women experience in relationships, and how to find or cultivate spaces that are affirming of your identity.
One theme that was consistent in our conversation was the impact that media can have on developing a healthy sense of self and of relationships as a queer person, so we also wanted to hear from an artist who is intentional about creating affirmative images of the Queer community. TV/Film Writer & Director, Felicia Pride also joined me to discuss her new short film, Tender.

Of course there's lots of commentary so we had to chat about it on the podcast so Dr. Lexx Brown-James is back to join the conversation. Dr. Lexx and I chatted about the stereotypes that are often invoked in commentary about Black women’s sexuality, the importance of agency in sexual liberation, how respectability politics are used to shame Black women, and how we can unpack our own shame around sexuality to encourage healthier attitudes towards sexuality for our children.

Am I the only one who's turned to video games to soothe myself the past couple of months? I have to admit I am enjoying the cool breezes and relaxing scenery of my island in Animal Crossing. While I'm new to gaming, I know that lots of other Black women have found a real sense of community in this space and wanted to learn more about it. For this conversation I was joined by Dr. Melissa Boone. Dr. Boone and I chatted about why so many of us have turned to games like Animal Crossing during the pandemic, the evolution she’s seen in terms of making gaming a more inclusive space, tips for parenting your young gamers and she shared how her experiences as a Social Psychologist have made her uniquely suited for the work she does currently.

I often hear comments about how laborious being in relationships is and wanted to dig into where this message might be coming from and why it seems to be so persistent. So of course I had to bring in one of my incredible colleagues to chat about it. Today we’re joined by Dr. Lexx Brown-James. We’re officially at the half way point in the year and July is always an important time as it’s the month that has been coined Minority Mental Health Month. Given the year that has been 2020, it feels like a good time to go back to some of the basics and dig into some of the things that are foundational to taking good care of our mental health. Much of what we’ve been experiencing in various ways over the past couple of months is grief. Grief related to the loss of loved ones, our previous way of life, and our ideas about what 2020 would look like. To help us dig a little deeper into what grief looks like given our current state of affairs, Dr. Ajita Robinson is back with us this week. Dr. Robinson and I chatted about our collective sense of grief, how our rituals around grief have been upended, the importance of processing symbolic losses, and her thoughts about the work that will need to be done on the other end of the pandemic.

In the last podcast episode of 2019, I shared 20 questions designed to help you set the tone for this year. Undoubtedly this year looks very different than we all imagined so it felt appropriate as we head into the halfway mark of this year to encourage you to spend some time with a second set of questions. And because I know many of you love a good handout with all of the questions in one place, I’ve made one for you that you can find at therapyforblackgirls.com/20morequestions

Last week, through the generous sponsorship and support of Med-IQ, I was able to have a conversation with Dr. Oni Blackstock who is the assistant commissioner for the Bureau of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control for the NYC Health Department. She shared all the facts you need to know about what we currently know about COVID-19, tips on how to keep you and your loved ones safe, what vaccine development looks like for the virus, and how it would work once we have one.

Our faves from HBO's Insecure are back for Season 4 and they're already giving us so much to to talk about so I had to grab my friend and colleague Dr. Donna Oriowo, M.Ed, MSW, CST to chat about what we saw in the season premiere. She and I chatted about all the opportunities that were missed to have some difficult but necessary conversations, how Molly's lack of self-awareness impacts her relationships, why brutal honesty doesn’t work, why it’s important to have tough conversations even if they’re super awkward, and she gives us a beautiful script for anyone who needs to have the “what are we” conversation.

This week we're rewinding with an interview I did with Melissa Douglas, LCSW in June 2018 all about virtual therapy. As many of you may be working with a therapist virtually for the first time, it felt important to revisit this conversation. Melissa and I discussed some of the differences between traditional and virtual therapy, how you can decide if it’s right for you, how to find a virtual therapist, and she shared all of her favorite apps for mental wellness.

For this conversation we're joined again by Melissa Ifill, LCSW. Melissa and I chatted about whether it is possible to heal in an environment that hurt you, what boundaries might look like with someone who’s hurt you, the importance of having difficult conversations, and what forgiveness really means when you’ve been hurt.

Today we’ll be digging into what it might look life to reimagine our image of the single Black woman and for this conversation we are lucky enough to be joined by Dr. Jessica D. Moorman. Dr. Moorman and I discussed the messages we get about dating and relationships from the media, how we can challenge and recreate some of these narratives for ourselves, what it looks like to embrace the freedom and potential that comes with being a single woman, and how you can begin to develop your single woman action plan.

For this conversation I was joined by Dr. Shanita Brown. Last week on our social media channels we posted a community member’s question about struggling with the idea of losing some of your freedom to be in a relationship and it sparked an incredible conversation so of course we had to bring it to the podcast to chat about it further. Dr. D and I chatted about what it looks like to explore this idea of freedom while in relationships, how you can begin to define what freedom looks like to you, conversations to have while dating that help you gain clarity about this, and establishing a culture in your relationship that can support the many changes you and your partner are likely to experience.

Last week, Dr. Mishelle and I took a deep dive into this season of Queen Sugar and this week I have a special treat for all of you anxiously anticipating the finale tonight. I had a chance to chat with the one and only Tina Lifford who portrays Aunt Vi on the show and we had an amazing conversation. We chatted about the evolution of Aunt Vi's character and how her journey mimics that of so many of us. We also chatted about giving ourselves space and time to tap into our deepest desires and she shared more about the internal work she's done to allow her to really connect with Aunt Vi's story.

This season of Queen Sugar has certainly provided us with lots of drama! In today's episode we're taking a deep dive into the highs and lows we've seen in some of our favorite characters from the show. For this conversation I was joined by Licensed Psychologist, Dr. Mishelle Rodriguez. Dr. Mishelle and I chatted about what kinds of things we might address if Nova came into therapy following the release of her book, the way that we have seen many of the characters deal with big emotions this season, our thoughts about Darla and Ralph Angel seemingly reconnecting and what we’d love to see as this season wraps up.

It's Back to School time so I wanted to dig into a topic this week to hopefully help stave off a few meltdowns for both you and your kids. In today’s episode, we’re talking about how we can work to better regulate our own emotions so that we can help our kids regulate theirs. For this conversation I was joined by Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart and we discussed what co-regulation is, how it can be useful in strengthening your relationship with your kids, how we can make sure we have enough reserves to manage our own emotions, and the important distinction between discipline and punishment.

If you've been paying attention to your social media channels recently, it's very likely you've seen a variety of sisters proclaim they're having a HOT GIRL SUMMER! Please help us continue to raise awareness about sexual health and HIV transmission by participating in a short survey at therapyforblackgirls.com/mediq (it takes less than 15 minutes). No personal information will be stored or shared from the survey. The purpose of the survey is to help us get a better understanding about how women communicate with their physicians about their sexual health and to provide you with some more information on PrEP and HIV prevention. The insights gained from the survey will be used in an educational tool to provide information that may be useful in keeping the lines of communication open with healthcare teams. After completing the survey, you can enter your name in a raffle to win one of eight $100 VISA gift cards.

This is a booster session! Sometimes after a client has finished working with us in therapy, they may schedule periodic sessions to problem solve around a particular issue or to get a little extra reinforcement around a certain topic. We call these booster sessions. I'll be using our booster sessions to chat with you about things that just can't wait until the next full episode.
