Diary of a Mad Black Man
Diary of a Mad Black Man is about my life, mental health and anything I find interesting enough to write about in my diary. This podcast is therapeutic, part of my self care routine, and my way of ending the stigma surrounding mental health - especially within the black community. I believe the story of our greatest downfall is the story of our greatest breakthrough. Sharing how we persevered through adversity becomes a survival guide, filled with inspiration and encouragement for someone else. Another night not able to sleep. Anxiety was high and I think I was too. But These thoughts reflect what is happening in my head. It is a reflection of the journey I have come down and it highlights where I was struggling.
To anyone who may be challenged with mental wellness, know that you can overcome it. I encourage you to find a safe protected space, get into therapy and focus on loving yourself. Since this say, it has been a journey to continuously heal, exists, and remain committed to this process. I a happy to say, today, in 2021, I am still committed to this journey. Things are going much better than what you are about to hear.

July 20th 2020 is a day I was having sucidal ideation. Triggered, I jumped on the mic to let it out. This happened in the day time, of that day. It started with watching someone I admire, Amanda Seals, be vulnerable and share her journey with mental health. It was so moving to see someone I view as a strong pillar of the black community, be vulnerable and share where she was.
It was a relief and trigger all at once. I had the confidence to know I could continue to be vulnerable and heal, yet the reality of life hit me as well.
This was the beginning of a very rough day, a day that I am choose to share with the world. Suicide and mental illness is real and we need to raise awareness and implement new strategies for people to cope, heal and manage their mental health.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageI woke up battling suicidal ideation on July 12th, 2020. Some of the reasons for why I was feeling the way I was is because I missed teaching, I was struggling financially, almost homeless living in a hotel. This was in the midst of the height of the pandemic, I was, STILL AM, tired of racism and white supremacy; I can now say I think I was struggling with sex addiction and how I was behaving with people.
This diary entry is one fo the first episodes I recorded like this. There are several parts that I took out due to how dark my thoughts became during the recording. It's explicit, and kind of hard to listen to.
However, I've overcome this. I've survived these thoughts and I am no longer here. I am thankful to God, the unvierse, my therapist, and myself. Because I have done the work! I have been focused on healing, managing my self care routine, and unapologetically loving myself.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageThe Birth and Evolution of Blake was recorded in 2021, the last recording for what I call my first Pod-Album. All 10 episodes of this season are out now, kinda like the release of an album.
In this first diary entry, I start this season with where I am currently. I bring you up into my present day life, with updates since the coming recordings. Most of this season was recorded in July of 2020, beginning after I started seeing a therapist. These introspective diary entries are the reality of where I once was mentally. Struggling with depressions, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, riots, corruption and a chaotic government, I began the series Podcasting for Mental Health.
Since the conception of this idea, I started to do the daily work of healing; mental, physically and spiritually. I began to seek therapy twice a week and document my journey. These diary entries are from the beginning of this journey. A snapshot into my life battling mental illness. A reflection of my mental health growth.
I hope these episodes bring awareness to mental health and helped to ease the challenges of those facing mental health issues. I hope it works to end the stigma in the black community, especially for black men, and sparks the flame of healing in the minds of those who listen. I am not an expert on mental health, but I am an expert of my mental health journey. I am a mental health advocate who aims to grow and evolve. Healing is not a destination, it a journey. This is a small part of my journey during 2020.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageWow, I am mesmerized that I am writing this. Diary entry 89, Season 3 Finale of Diary of a Mad Black Man. There is a lot to say but I will keep it short for now. If you've been following my podcast since I started, you know the growth, you've experienced it with me. Over the past year in 2020, we have all be challenged by the uncontrollable mental anguish we have all experienced. As my audience, you know my mental anguish didn't begin this year, it was amplified.
I am taking a break on the podcast for a while. I am not sure when I will return to this but I can assure you, I will be back. This diary entry came after a difficult conversation I had and probably should not have had. However, it happened. The message here is that I need to rest. I need to take some more time to heal and process what I have created. It has been a beautiful journey overall and it is because of this safe space I created for myself, I am still alive today.
My audience, you, know why I do this. It's not for the downloads, plays, money or "clout" that can potentially be gained. This is what healing looks like, for me. This is my truth. I am speaking my truth, living my truth and healing. Its a journey, not a destination. Its a process that will probably be forever ongoing.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart for listening, supporting and engaging with me. I will be back in 2021 with Season 4 of my podcast. Bigger, better, and more healed than I am today. Making money, seeking downloads, or plays is not the motive of this podcast. Healing is. I hope for peace, prosperity, and an abundance of blessings to you and yours. Until we meet again, sometime in 2021, take care and stay blessed and be safe.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageIn this diary entry, I have a special guest, my mother. Trigger Warning, This is a heavy episode. This episode was recorded back in June of 2020. As the conversation unfolds, our tainted relationship comes to the surface. My sexuality and how she does not accept me has been one of the greatest issues in our relationship throughout my adulthood. I do not blame my mother for my childhood. Our relationship is the way it because of how she has treated me as an adult. I now navigate life believing I will never have the relationship with my family that I desire.
As I continue to accept this, it doesn't necessarily make things easier to believe. I just lean more on those who allow me to be part of their life. As I embrace and love myself on a deeper level, I have been unpacking the internalized homophobia that I carry. Part of the reason for this is because of the homophobic environment I grew up in. Mom wasn't the only one...

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageIn this diary entry, I invite Andy on the podcast to do a part 2 of WTF! Me and Andy connected in the podcast world and created an episode together WTF Ep 189 on Real Men Feel, towards to beginning of June. Prior to that, we were on a panel together to discuss being black in America but - Andy is a white man.
However, as I've grown to know him, I have found him to be an ally in this movement towards black liberation, equality and freedom. We came together because since these episodes, he has used his platform to push the culture forward and educate himself on his own white privilege and use it for good.
This episode is heavy and it is not enough. However, it is one step forward in the right direction to bring change to the society we currently live in. I appreciate Andy for the work his is doing, being honest, vulnerable and transparent. We are all in this together.

HEY WENDY! lol (I know you're reading this)
Welcome to another great episode of Diary of a Mad Black Man. This diary entry is episode 2 of the friendship and adulting series. Wendy, who at the time of this recording, was my friend living in The Netherlands! We met through a group chat for The Roommates podcast. Through this group chat, and by the grace of God, we have built a bond that transcends the Atlantic Ocean and this world.
Wendy is another friend of mine, who even before I considered her a friend, was there for me during my mental health challenges. Specifically after I became ill and almost died, she was there for me the best she could be, from the other side of the world. We go in depth into that during this episode and more. She drops many gems about friendship and how to maintain a balance between friendship and adulting. Wendy is my friend from The Netherlands and no distance between us will ever change that. She is also moving MUCH closer very soon. Ill save the details on that for when she's back on the podcast as a guest. Stay tuned until then and enjoy this episode.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageWelcome to another great diary entry! This is the first episode of the friendship & adulting series. In this series, I have friends of mine on the podcast to talk about our friendship, how we maintain a healthy balance between remaining friends and adulting.
Friendship, let alone true friendship is hard to come by, especially as adults. The premise of this series is to discover the meaning of true friendship and how we maintain a balance between being an adult and remaining friends.
In this episode, I sit down with my best friend from high school, @spurs.x0 to talk about our friendship. We take it all the way back to how we met to where we are now. She was there for me through many of my mental health challenges when no one else was. She has helped me to overcome and continues to be a positive person in my life.

In this diary entry, I had the pleasure to be joined by Malik, author of Course 28: A Memoir of Mental Health. I feel honored to speak with another black man about the challenges we have faced with our mental health. I was deeply inspired by Malik and his story. It confirms the fact I am not alone in my journey of healing and managing my mental health. It was refreshing to connect with another brother like myself, who used his struggles to do something positive. I aspire to be an author like him and I am certain this connection will not end at this diary entry.
Vulnerable. Honest. Encouraging. I hope you enjoy this diary entry as much as I did.

I have been sitting on this episode for some time now and I believe now is the time to release it. I have a special guest in this episode who was a teacher with me in the same building.
I hope this episode brings some encouragement to the teachers who are still on the battle field. Please take care of yourself first. I can speak for myself, I did not do it the best I could have. Yet the experience has led me to understand my mental health much deeper than I ever have. I am grateful for the experience and I will always have love for each and every student I served. I know I made a positive impact and completed the assignment to the best of my abilities.

In this weeks diary entry, it is coming in two parts. A teacher friend in Florida went though this experience of having a student bring a gun in the building. By the grace of God, no one was hurt and it ended peacefully.
With the current climate, I sat on this episode for a couple months. I believe now is the time to release this and my hope is that it sparks healthy dialogue amongst parents, teachers and communities across this country. Followed by action to make our education conducive to the current times we are living in and the future. There is no one size fits all "FIX," to prevent situations similar to this. However, we CAN implement policies, procedures and redirect our efforts in a different direction. What we are currently doing is not working. Throw the whole system away. My heart aches for the young boy who did this because he is battling an internal battle; traumatized & lost. This resulted in him believe his decision was ok...
So much to unpack from this episode, I had to split it up into a two parts. The second half of this episode will release in two days on 8/27. As usual, I hope you enjoy and learn something from this.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageWednesday, July 22nd, around 11 o'clock pm, I sat down to record a diary entry about racism and reflect on a recent interview I saw on The Breakfast Club. It prompted me to do some light research and find this article from the New York Times. There no one size fits all answer. One conversation is not enough to unpack racism and white supremacy.
Racism and white supremacy run deep into the laws and institutions of our society. This was a day where racism was heavy on my mind and I had to unpack some of what is going on for the sake of my own mental health. I plan to continue to speak about racism and white supremacy on my podcast so be sure you subscribe for future episodes.

In this weeks diary entry, I am joined by Sam and his mother, Gina. Sam is an exceptionally gifted young man who uses his podcast, Autism Rocks and Rolls, to end the stigma of mental health and raise awareness about autism. I connected with Sam while developing the Podcasting and Collaborating series, and instantly knew I had to speak with him and his Mom!
Diagnosed with Autism at an early age, he shares his story with passion, purpose and profound vulnerability. Sam is an exceptionally gifted young man who is charismatic, articulate and intelligent. Sam uses his platform to end the stigma surrounding Autism by sharing his story with passion, purpose and profound vulnerability. His podcast, Autism Rocks and Rolls, is an extremely useful and helpful resource to anyone wanting to know more about Autism or who are in the fight to end the stigma of mental illness. His humble, honest, character enables him to be the exceptional speaker, coach and podcaster that he is and I highly recommend you check out his work.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageJKtheGM is one of the men behind the brand called “Let’s talk about Mental Health.” Jk, joined his partner Stevie (@steviepettus on IG), to expand the brand to bring awareness about mental health, support people being challenged and end the stigma around mental health. JK works with many organizations and is active in the Metro Atlanta community, to create safe spaces for black men to be vulnerable and talk about mental health. Once I mentioned I have a podcast, often discussing mental health, we quickly decided to collaborate. The topic was easy; “let’s talk about mental health.”
In true diary fashion, we sit down and simply do just that - talk about mental health. My first in-person collab, I am excited for you to hear about the initiatives and insight he brings to DOAMBM. Be sure to check him out on Instagram @jkthegm. You can be certain this will not be the only time you will hear JKtheGM on my podcast, or about us working together in Atlanta to raise awareness about mental health.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageIn acknowledging May as Mental Health Month, I felt compelled to go ahead and release part 2 of this series, I Quit Teaching. My mental health challenges is ultimately the reason why I left the classroom. This diary entry is the longest podcast I have produced to date and one of the most difficult diary entries I've created.
I hope this message can be of inspiration to you. To the teachers still in the classroom, I commend you on your work, effort and energy you give each day.
It is somewhat unfortunate that my mental health prohibited me from continuing my career. However, I am growing to be more grateful for this experience because it has helped me to become the man I am today equipped with new tools, strategies and knowledge about my mental wellness. Enjoy this diary entry as I share more about why I quit teaching.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageThe phrase "I quit teaching," means more than just the words themselves. Together, they signify a change in my career. The experience was a major transitional point in my life; I will live with these memories for as long as I live.. To this day, I am still unpacking the experience. I started this episode with the intention of "one diary entry" about this topic but that quickly changed. I realized there has to be multiple parts to this topic. Therefore this is a 3 part series!
This first episode is the release. Just the raw, overview of my experience. Getting it all off my chest. This topic will unfold over 3 episodes because it just that much to unpack. Maybe more than that! But right now, it will be 3. I hope you will tune into not this series, but future episodes.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageAs the pandemic continues to evolve, I reflect on a trip to downtown Atlanta and it looked like a ghost time. Much of this episode is me becoming more open and honest about how I am managing everything during this time. I share how I am balancing my mental health and maintaining my sanity while being isolated at home.
This episode is the first episode of this series with over 1 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 world wide. The panic is growing, the pandemic is expanding but the faith is still here. I hope you enjoy the show and take something from it.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageBefore I knew it, 3 or 4 days had gone by. I was somewhat in shock this had happened. I had slipped up and allowed my depression and anxiety to take over. I have been trying to give myself grace during this time and not be too critical of myself. In this episode I reflect on what life has been like for me and how everyone is experiencing this pandemic in a different way.. Maybe if you lived with your family and were very close; maybe if you had a significant other, it would not be as bad. For me, it's been isolating, depressing and draining. Trying to keep my spirits up and stay focused through this. Depression and Anxiety are high at the time of recording.
At the time of this recording, there were approximately 164,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 3,172 deaths here in the USA. Worldwide - 857,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageIn this episode, I discuss resources and information I found about the corona virus pandemic. This episode was recorded before the city of Atlanta or Georgia implemented any lockdown measures, yet panic was in the air. While recording this episode, I was not aware of the mental and emotional turmoil I was quickly about to be dealing while living during a global pandemic. It had not become real to me at this point in time.
At the time of recording,, there were 7,038 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States and 97 deaths.
At the time of recording, there were 197 confirmed cases in the state of Georgia and 3 deaths.
The harsh reality of living during a global pandemic had not hit me yet. I try to make light of it and provide resources to stay informed. This is the beginning of the Coronavirus Quarantine Series. A series about life during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageI am back! This weeks episode is a "catch-up" episode. As you may know, I missed a week in publishing my podcast due to just being overwhelmed with life. From my mental health not being in the best place, the death of a legend, Kobe Bryant, to family issues and challenges, it has been overwhelming these past few weeks. However, I found a way to pull myself together and get back to regularly scheduled programming. I am very thankful for this opportunity to podcast and I am grateful for each and every listener I have. The support means more than I can express in words at this time. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy this weeks episode. I am not going anywhere but the small break was necessary.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageFor about 10 days, I had to cleanse myself of social media. I took time away from my person IG and was more intentional with how I used social media. Although I did not completely step away, I primarily used my time focused on building my podcast, and the social platforms I use for my pod. It has been a great journey and I have learned a lot from it. I will be more intentional in 2020 and this is just one step in that direction. This episodes shares what this journey has been like. Making room for my healing and clearing my mind is key to leveling up in 2020 and beyond.
However one thing will still remain which is this podcast. Find me on Instagram and Twitter - @diaryofambm
I will remain active on these platforms, for the sake of my podcast.
Thanks for tuning in!
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/messageLiving with depression and anxiety is one of the reasons I created this podcast. It has been a safe space to release in a healthy, positive way. In this episode, I discuss mental health and the stigma in the black community with Taraji P. Henson. I found a great video of her sharing her experiences and thoughts that I felt was perfect for an episode. I've been challenged by mental health in my life and I will continue to speak about it, raise awareness in efforts to end the stigma. If you or anyone you know needs help, it is out there. Go find it. This episode if my continuation to he elevation of our consciousness, awareness for mental health, and to end the stigma in the black community.
