#47 BMI: A Measure of Health?
46 perc 4. évad 47. rész Monica Fenwick & Nadia Felsch

The BMI (body mass index) is a formula that is determined by weight divided by height. Created in 1830 for statistical purposes, it was never intended for clinical use.  But somehow it is the go-to measure for our bodies and our health.

And it's fair to say like many things that have been around for almost 200 years, it has become outdated.

It’s used by health professionals everywhere to measure a person’s health - but is the BMI really a measure of anything? Is it still relevant today? And is it harmful?

In this episode, we chat about:

  • What the BMI is
  • It’s origin and how it is applied today especially in healthcare
  • The limitations of the BMI and what it fails to take into account
  • What the research says about BMI and health

#46 Eat Everything and Be Healthy feat. Evelyn Tribole (@evelyntribole)
58 perc 3. évad 46. rész Monica Fenwick & Nadia Felsch

If I give myself permission to eat all foods, will I just eat donuts all day?  Can I trust my body to tell me what it needs? How will I know when to stop eating?

When you've been stuck in the dieting loophole, Intuitive Eating might be hard to get your head around to begin with, and these may be common (and totally valid) concerns.

So how is it that you can honour health and eat with freedom?
Asking that question in itself is a sign of the diet mentality.
To discuss this critical area of Intuitive Eating, we brought in the expert (AKA the OG of Intuitive Eating), Evelyn Tribole.

Evelyn (@evelyntribole) is a Registered Dietitian, author of nine books, and one of the founders of the revolutionary non-diet approach, known as Intuitive Eating.

We chat with Evelyn about:

  • How you can honour your health and eat with food freedom
  • How the fear of eating donuts all day is rooted in the restriction that dieting reinforces
  • How pleasure and satisfaction of what we eat is often overlooked, whilst its importance is downplayed
  • The first step you can take to put weight loss on the back burner when reconnecting with your body and commencing your own intuitive eating journey

We're sorry Hippocrates, but food isn't medicine.  It's just food.

Don't get us wrong, we know food and nutrition is important for overall health, but nutrition isn't the only factor and we need to stop giving it so much power.

So where's the harm in saying food is medicine? For one, it implies that those who are sick must have failed by eating the wrong foods; or perhaps someone foregoes proper medical treatment in favour of turmeric and pseudoscience.

In this week's episode we are very fortunate to be joined by two opinionated, well educated and outspoken experts in the field - NHS surgeon Dr Joshua Wolrich and lawyer-turned-current nutrition PhD Alan Flanagan.

#43 How We Talk About Food Matters
38 perc 3. évad 43. rész Monica Fenwick & Nadia Felsch

Diet culture has trained us to think about foods as 'good', 'bad', 'healthy', 'allowed' or 'forbidden'.
What comes to mind when you think of ice cream? Fries? Bread? Broccoli? We bet you had some labels at the ready.

How we talk about food and the language we use matters.  When we base our food decisions on obligation (i.e. what we should and shouldn't eat), we miss out on the opportunity to explore what we feel like eating, how the food makes us feel physically and emotionally, and what we like and don't like.

#39 Resolving Food Guilt

#36 The Many Faces of Diet Culture Feat. Brenna O'Malley
43 perc 3. évad 36. rész Monica Fenwick & Nadia Felsch

As a society, the narrative that thin = healthy and happy, fat = unhealthy and unhappy, and that pursuing weight loss = taking care of ourselves is strong. But who says this is true and that we need to listen?

Diet culture influences our thoughts and behaviours everyday.  And in a society that is constantly telling us we need to change, it is hard to respect and accept our bodies if we are subtly being influenced by diet culture and unaware of it.

In this episode we are fortunate to be joined by Registered Dietitian Brenna O'Malley from @thewellful who shares her knowledge and wisdom on diet culture - what is it, how we can notice it and what we can do about it.

#34 Get to Know Us

Call or text? Cheese or chocolate? What is the most awkward thing that’s ever happened to you? We ask the hard hitting questions of one another that (we hope) Becky wants to know!

Some might say a pointless episode completely unrelated to anything. And we would agree.
Some might say an episode designed to make Becky laugh and perhaps for a moment allow her to forget about what’s happening in the world.  And we would also agree with that too.

This episode is about creating a sense of connection for you and like always, a source of entertainment.

Why not reach out to others virtually, play this game and get to know your family and friends better? Now more than ever we need to stay connected, and we’ve got the time right?

We are in an unprecedented time right now. Dependent on your situation, this might be a time where you find yourself experiencing complex emotions. Feelings of uncertainty and worry? You're not alone.

In this episode, we want to provide support to you during this challenging time as we are all dealing with and adjusting to life during COVID-19.  And provide you with resources and go-to’s within yourself and externally, to set yourself up now and in the future.

We chat about:

  • How you always need to eat (+ how that may be stressing you out)
  • How what you’re seeing on social media right now from unqualified sources might not be that helpful
  • Why turning down the noise to protect yourself is important

Remember Becky, we are all in this together and we will come out of this more resilient.  Be kind and reach out to others virtually, now more than ever, is the time to stay connected.

#41 Intuitive Exercise Feat. Tally Rye
58 perc 1. évad 41. rész Monica Fenwick & Nadia Felsch

What does exercise represent for you?

For many of us, exercise is seen as a vehicle for weight loss, a way to manipulate our body shape and size, all about burning calories and earning our food.
For many, it comes from a place of body loathing and a desire to change it.

But what if you could transform your view of exercise towards appreciating the gift of movement? Dare we say, actually enjoying it for what it is?

If we have any shot of doing this however, it's critical to disconnect the concepts of weight loss and aesthetics from exercise. When movement is wrapped up in diet culture, we’re robbed of all its countless benefits. Plus, we're less likely to continue with it.

In this week’s episode, we're so fortunate to be joined by Tally Rye, a Personal Trainer who celebrates inclusivity and Intuitive Exercise.

We chat with Tally about:

  • Her journey to body respect and size acceptance
  • What Intuitive Exercise is
  • The many benefits of exercise (that have nothing to do with weight)
  • How the fitness industry and diet culture has robbed us of all the joy that exercise can give us
  • The importance (and lacking!) of diversity and inclusion within the fitness world
  • What the first step to finding intuitive movement and to “train happy” is

Weight loss is taught to us at every level. No more so than as a Nutritionist / Dietitian. And yet  the data speaks for itself. Most (95%) of diets fail. Many folks regain more weight each time. Weight cycling is metabolically dangerous. Weight stigma kills. We could go on.

So how is that professionals like us; educated in the weight-centric, medical-model; became Health at Every Size® (HAES®) aligned? Where do we learn about it? Why does it matter?

For this episode, we wanted a wider perspective than our own and were so fortunate to be joined by Shana Spence and Sam Previte.

Shana is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist based in New York. Her insta is @thenutritiontea and she counsels clients virtually from a HAES and IE-oriented lens.

Sam is a Registered Dietitian based in Florida who counsels clients virtually to make peace with food. She also co-hosts the Drunk Dietitians Podcast and can be found on insta @find.food.freedom.

With Shana and Sam we explore:

  • the weight-centric model taught in nutrition education
  • how they learnt about the HAES® framework
  • when and why their professional shift occurred

Join our community here and together let's change the conversation around food.
