123. Living Without Regrets & Making a Memory Quilt
48 perc 3. évad 23. rész Leah Day

This is a sad podcast about my Mother-in-Law, Ellen, who passed away Thanksgiving Day. I share about Ellen and the memory quilt I'm making with her clothing and what I've learned from this loss.

Here are the steps I'm taking on her memory quilt:

1. Cutting up the shirts and ripping out dart seams to create flat pieces of fabric.
2. Stabilizing the fabrics with French Fuse so they are easier to piece and will reinforce the material in case there are small holes from wear.
Find French Fuse here: https://leahday.com/products/french-fuse
3. Pressing the French Fuse to the wrong side of each piece with a medium heat iron.

Grieving isn't an easy process and we're taking it one day at a time. I hope to get back to making tutorials and podcasts on my usual schedule in January 2020. Be looking forward to my Word of the Year podcast the last week of December, or first week of January.

Hello my quilting friends! We made it to Episode #50! I'm so happy we created this podcast a year and a half ago. It's helped me reach many goals including feeling more connected to the quilting world and gives me a great excuse to start conversations with quilters and organizations I find interesting. I also decided to check in on my long term goals because just this week I met a goal I'd been seeking for many years. I talk a lot about how I keep my goals always present and maintain focus even over several years of steady effort. 049. Quilting and Copyright with Elizabeth Townsend Gard
56 perc 1. évad 49. rész Elizabeth Townsend Gard, Leah Day
Hello my quilting friends! Today I'm chatting with Elizabeth Townsend Gard about quilting and copyright. Check out Just Wanna Quilt, Elizabeth's podcast about the quilting industry and intellectual property right here: https://www.justwannaquilt.com/ I have long felt that copyright and quilting is a tricky subject. On the one hand we have a huge range of public domain quilt blocks and patterns. Basically if your great grandma was piecing log cabin blocks, chances are her great grandma was too. On the other hand many designers struggle to sell patterns because quilters copy and share them rather then purchasing their own copy. It's one thing for a log cabin block to be in the public domain, but the pattern itself - the cut sizes and the words used to describe how to piece that particular quilt are the property of the designer. In the podcast we discussed a specific issue that happened recently with a private Facebook group. The members of the group were copying patterns and quilting books and intentionally covering up or removing the attribution and the information about the authors. I think it's safe to say that most people know this is 100% wrong. I also think it's safe to say that most quilters want to support the designers that they love. Elizabeth Townsend GardBut there also seems to be a good bit of fear in the quilting design community from accidentally designing a pattern to similar to someone else. When do you have to ask permission to make your own version of a quilt? When do you have to ask permission to use a tool or machine or gadget? I've now listened to several of Elizabeth's episodes from Just Wanna Quilt and I love hearing abou the quilting industry from many different perspectives. I have my own little snapshot of what the industry is based on my experience working online and teaching, but that's a very different perspective from a fabric manufacturer in New York or a quilt shop owner in Utah. This is exactly Elizabeth's goal - to create a picture of the quilting industry by talking to as many different people at she can. That includes designers, quilting teachers, fabric manufacturers, and hobby quilters too! If you like to be on the Just Wanna Quilt podcast, please get in touch with Elizabeth and share your thoughts on quilting. Hello My Quilting Friends! Today I'm chatting with Grace Medina from Handy and Crafty. She's originally from Venezuela but has been living in Qatar and has an interesting perspective on quilting, teaching and making tutorials online. Find Grace's YouTube channel right here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCl50mnjdjrs5wSB7GsgGshQ When we spoke, Grace was working on a quilt tutorial for Valentine's Day. I record the podcast several weeks in advance so she's already had a chance to post this and you can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXTgI1pXFVM Grace went to college for journalism and learned to tell stories by asking who, what, when, where, how? She brings the same perspective to her quilting tutorials and tries to answer all the questions someone would have about a particular technique. Living in the Middle East does create some challenges for quilting. Grace mentioned being able to find any fabric she wants, but it's very challenging to find notions like rotary cutters and blades. Luis Sanchez, my friend from Costa Rica also mentioned struggling to find thread and machines in his country. Grace shares tutorials on quilting and sewing in Spanish because there are very few books instructions in her mother language. Because she lives in a place where it's hard to find special tools she had to figure out a way to teach with just the basics. She wants quilters everywhere to have access to videos in Spanish so everyone is supported and can learn how to make beautiful quilts. Moving forward Grace really wants her abilities to grow and to take it more seriously. She plans to write a book on quilting in Spanish and I think that I'll be a huge hit! 047. Longarm Quilting with Mom and Pop Quilt Shop
57 perc 1. évad 47. rész Laura-Lynn Fulford, Leah Day
Hello My Quilting Friends! Today I'm chatting with Laura-Lynn Fulford, the mom from the Mom and Pop Quilt Shop! Laura-Lynn is a longarm quilter from Canada. She and her husband share videos on longarm quilting on their Youtube channel Mom and Pop Quilt Shop. She also has a website where you can check out all of her services. Find it at WeSewIt.Ca. Laura-Lynn quilts on a Gammill Stattler Stitcher, which is a BIG machine! It's 16 feet all around and she can quilt 24 inches before needing to advance the quilt. She also has automation set up so the computer can drive the machine and stitch out digitized designs. What struck me immediately about Laura-Lynn is her connection to her community. She's a crossing gaurd, teaches quilting to kids, and quilts for a living. She also does alterations and makes charity quilts for her local fire department. Laura-Lynn always sewed and her business started naturally a few years ago when someone needed alterations. Then she and her husband decided to make it their retirement income and got a small business loan in order to purchase the longarm and a Janome Horizon 15000. The biggest part of her business recently has been finishing quilts for people that didn't finish them before they died. These projects sound like a real challenge because they might be in a seriously unfinished state and Laura-Lynn has to figure out how to work with the fabrics, stabilize, and complete the project for the family to enjoy. That sounds like a lot of work and could be very expensive, but Laura-Lynn tries to work with everyone. She'll barter with customers and accept straw for her chickens in exchange for alterations or other services. We and I talked a lot about quilt basting on a longarm and basting the batting before layering the quilt top on the frame. Laura-Lynn's longarm quilting tips: - Check your tension with every bobbin. Weird things can happen when you change bobbins so always test off the quilt before getting into the project. - Baste your batting so the quilt rolls up nice and square. - Practice! The more you quilt, the better you will get. I've shared a few videos quilting on my Grace Qnique, but Laura-Lynn was super helpful sharing her tips for setting up my cameras. She uses a Go Pro and sets it up on the handles of her longarm using a bicycle mount. She's also set up a web cam to the top of the machine that films livestreams. With a name like Mom and Pop Quilt Shop, you know there's two people involved, but Pop is the behind the scenes guy. He helps with editing the videos, designs quilts, and digitizes designs. He's also focused on keeping an archive of their work to leave a legacy behind. I loved talking with Laura-Lynn and learning about longarming as well as her wholesome approach to business and life. The last thing she said has really stuck with me: There is always something to be happy about and be celebrated in the future.

042. Is Spray Basting Bad for Quilts? Great Quilting Debate with Leah Day
32 perc 1. évad 42. rész Leah Day
Basting spray is an aerosol glue you can use to spray the layers of your quilt so they stick together. It's a faster basting method in comparison to pin basting or hand basting, and I know many quilters that prefer to use spray basting because it's easier on their hands. As with all my Great Quilting Debate episodes, I 100% believe you should use what you want and what works for you! I use polyester thread for quilting, I like to prewash and starch all my fabric before cutting, and I press my seams open - all of these are topics that quilters argue about. But I rarely hear anyone arguing about basting spray and this worries me. I get questions weekly about whether starch will make their quilts more susceptible to bugs (a ridiculous quilting rumor in my opinion), but I never get questions about the effects of basting spray - a far more detrimental chemical. Maybe this is because I don't use basting spray so quilters are taking their questions about it elsewhere. Or maybe quilters don't know about the possible side effects of using this chemical in their quilts. 034. Is Starch Bad for Our Quilts? Great Quilting Debate with Leah Day
38 perc 1. évad 34. rész Leah Day
Yes, the choice to use starch on your fabric is a contentious subject in the quilting world and over the years I've gotten comments ranging from "You're ruining people's quilts with your bad advice!" to "Wow! Starch made such a difference to my fabric and piecing is so much easier now!" One thing I forgot to include in the podcast is why I use starch - I find it stiffens the fabric nicely, which makes squaring it and cutting pieces and strips much easier and more accurate. I also find starch fabrics are less likely to fray on the edges. Lately I've been testing the stability of my starched fabrics by not pinning units together. Even with the seams pressed open and no pins, my seams are matching every time and I think a lot of that has to do with all the fabrics in the quilt feeling and acting the same. I don't have one fabric that's going loosey goosie while another is stiff as a board. So yes, I'm on Team Starch and I use it to prepare the fabrics in every single quilt we make. If we're using precuts, every single strip or square is starched on both sides before it's cut or pieced into the quilt. As for Team Starch is Evil, I get it! If you've been taught that a substance is bad for your fabric and you've never used it before and got along just fine, that's great! When researching starch, I found a lot of helpful information at OldandInteresting.com. I do think the whole bug-loving-starch thing is a bit silly and I shared my opinion on where that story got started in the podcast. It makes absolutely no sense that a substance used for hundreds of years in clothing that washes out of fabric completely could make a moth more likely to chew up your quilt! There are a lot more products out there like fusible webs, spray basting, and permanent marking pens that can wreck far more havoc on your quilts and I don't see a massive concerted effort to demonize them. As with our last Great Quilting Debate podcast on pressing seams open, I think there's room for every technique, every method, and every opinion. Please don't feel like just because you don't use starch or press your seams open we can't be friends! For the past few years Margaret has shared quilt along projects online. This year instead of one massive quilt along, she's sharing Quilt of the Quarter - four different quilts which take a quarter of the year to create and are made with fat quarters! Her last Quilt of the Quarter will be this beautiful Christmas tree quilt using Kaffe Fasset fabrics. All of the Quilts of the Quarter are projects Margaret designs herself to tackle her fat quarter stash. She designs the quilt patterns so you can make multiple sizes depending on how many fat quarters you start with. This is great because fat quarters are often something I collect, but find hard to use up! Margaret shares the How-To information of her quilt alongs on YouTube and shares any written directions on Facebook. She has trouble with the written directions, but can easily show you how to do something in video. She learned how to do this when her daughter was in Idaho and wanted to learn how tie a quilt. Margaret tried to write out the directions, but that didn't work so she grabbed a camera and shot a video of Margaret, her sister, and her mom teaching her daughter how to tie a quilt. Margaret started a blog and kept it going for awhile, but just didn't feel like it got traction. She's was one of the first quilters to try longarm rulers on her home machine and she's taught two Craftsy classes on this topic as well: Quilting with Rulers on a Home Machine and Creative Quilting with Rulers. She started by simply blogging her quilting adventures, then taught the Craftsy class and opened an online store to carry the tools, rulers, and feet that support the classes. I send everyone to Amy's website for ruler feet because she will know what foot will fit your machine the best. Amy was a stay at home mom, but then her husband was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and this changed their lives completely. Now he works repairing the sewing machines at Sew Simple, the machine dealership they own in Lynchburg, VA. They've just recently moved the shop to a new building that has a separate classroom so Amy has space for teaching and machines. We worked together last year on the Tunic Challenge. Each week we shared our progress on a tunic from The Tunic Bible in blog posts. Come to think of it, I need to make another tunic for the summer! We talked a bit about the challenges brick and mortar quilt shops are going through with competition from online stores. Many store owners feel like people are "show running" the shop and looking and checking things out, but then buying online to get a better deal. That trend is driving brick and mortar shops out of business because it is VERY expensive to run a physical quilt shop. Amy is working so hard to manage her two businesses and we talked a bit about burnout. Working super long days, taking care of three kids, a household, and a storefront is so much to manage. I've struggled with burnout myself and I know there's only so long you can run fast and hard before something breaks. Moving forward, Amy wants to focus more on her online business, be able to spend more time quilting and be able to step away from cutting fabric in the quilt shop. I keep telling her she needs to write a book, but as you'll see from the intro - that's a lot of work too! This episode was sponsored by April Wells from SewDarnCuteQuilting.Blogspot.com. Laura shares videos on sewing and quilting and plans her tutorials around seasonal projects and items she's curious about and wants to create. She occasionally will publish a series of videos like her three part how to sew on buttons, but for the most part you only need to watch one video to see the entire tutorial. Her process for creating a video is pretty simple - she gets an idea, then researches the materials required, and designs the pattern. As she's writing and planning, she's also acquiring the materials and keeps the entire project organized in a bin on her shelf. Once the bin is filled and she has all the materials and pattern created, Laura starts making the video. It takes her about two days to create the video tutorials from start to finish. Hello, my quilting friends! Leah Day here with episode 7 of the podcast, and today I'm going to share an interview with Mary Fons. She is the daughter of Marianne Fons, who started Fons and Porter. She's just such a amazing all-around person, and we really hit it off at Quilt Market. Then I was like, "You know, you want to be on the podcast? That way I can get to know you a little bit better." This podcast really runs the gamut on conversations and stuff and topics, but I would say I guess the overall theme is just love of quilting, love of making quilts, and Mary helps debunk a few of the myths of quilting so that's really cool too. You can check out Mary's website at MaryFons.com.
6. Fabric Design with Sandra Clemons

we're going to talk about fabric design with Sandra Clemons. Now, Sandra is a quilter. She's an author. She is a self-publisher and she's a fabric designer and her new line of fabric is called Front Yard. It was developed by Michael Miller Fabrics. We're going to talk about fabric design and Sandra's process and a little bit about how she created her booth at quilt market. I really enjoyed hearing Sandra's experience and her design process just learning more about the behind-the-scenes of fabric design. I've done a little bit of this but hearing from Sandra really brought home like when you're serious about something and you're dedicated to it, it's like you bring a whole different side of yourself to the table and Sandra's definitely bringing it when it comes to fabric designs. I think you're going to find this really interesting. Sandra's website is sandramakeitblossom.com. You can check that out as well as her fabric Front Yard at https://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/new/front-yard.html

4. Machine Embroidery with Patsy Thompson

This week my guest is Patsy Thompson, an award winning quilter with a distinctive style of machine quilting and machine embroidered applique. In this episode Patsy shares all her secrets to machine embroidery - how she hoops, the stabilizer and other supplies she uses to achieve such a unique, beautiful look to her machine applique. Machine embroidery does have an interesting reputation in the quilting world. I know I misjudged machine embroidery for years as "cheating" because I didn't understand how it worked or what you could make with it. Patsy and I discuss this as well and how quilters with embroidery machines can start using their machines to do many more things - including making blocks for quilts!
3. Behind the Scenes of a Family Business with Josh Day
40 perc 0. rész Leah Day, Josh Day
Today I’m going to share an interview my husband and business partner Josh Day. Josh and I work together and are equal shareholders in our business, and I can honestly say that Josh is 50% if not more of this business. Even though it’s my face in the videos and my name on the website, Josh is the man behind the curtain and does so much work behind the scenes to keep our business running smoothly. If you email me through the site LeahDay.com, it will be Josh that responds to you. If you place an order, it will be Josh who packs your order for you and ships it to you. In this interview it’s Josh’s turn to talk and share a side of our business that we’ve never had the opportunity to share – how it works from the back end, the good and bad sides of working together, and a little bit about how we balance work and family, even though we work from home.
2. How to Make Better Decisions Based on Your Core Values
17 perc 0. rész Leah Day
Hello my quilting friends! Welcome to episode 2 of the podcast. Today is all about values – I want to share some new insights I’ve run across and some terrific books to listen to as you quilt that help you tap into your core values. This has been super helpful for me and it’s not just helping me make decisions in my business, it’s also helping me prioritize my quilt projects. I know a big value of mine is trying new things, but I often don’t leave enough time for myself to really experiment and dig into a technique. So by working on my values I’ve been able to set aside more time to play and that has definitely been making me feel a lot happier. So exploring your values could potentially help you pick your next quilt project, help you decide what skills or techniques to focus on this winter, or what business decisions are really going to fit with your life and your family.
1. Traditional vs Self Published Quilting Books with Christa Watson and Stephanie Palmer
53 perc 0. rész Leah Day, Christa Watson, Stephanie Palmer
I’m super excited to share a recording from 2016 quilt market with you today. I teamed up with Christa Watson from Christaquilts.com and Stephanie Palmer from QuiltingPlanner.com to talk about writing and publishing books for quilters. Now I’ve known Christa for a few years and we met online first and collaborated a bit. I remember Christa emailing me for help on a few magazine articles she was writing, then we met in person at a spring quilt market a few years ago and really hit it off. And Christa has launched her quilting business into the big time in the last few years. She’s written two books, and is working on her third, she sells precuts in The Precut Store on Amazon, and I believe she has a Craftsy class in the works as well so definitely lots of stuff going on for Christa. Christa actually introduced me to Stephanie Palmer just before quilt market and again, this was just such a serendipitous moment where we could have done the schoolhouse presentation with just the two of us, but adding Stephanie was just perfect because she added a totally different perspective of publishing to the mix. She has created The Quilting Planner which is in i’s second year and she gave me a copy and I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be able to live without them from now on! It’s far more than just a date book – it has graph paper and space to plan quilts and it includes some quilting projects too so I think all quilters should have. So this was a live interview at fall Quilt Market 2016 which is basically an industry trade show. This is where manufacturers and business owners meet with quilt shop owners, designers show off their new lines of fabric, and where a lot of networking and learning goes on every year. My inspiration for creating this schoolhouse presentation was to share my love of writing and self publishing with more quilters. There are a lot of choices and a lot of ways to publish your books these days and I hope it will inspire you to think outside the box with your quilting books.
