I don't know about you, but I am my own worse critic. I don't usually give myself credit for the things I've done and accomplished, though I shower those around me with compliments and assurance. Today is International Women's Day and I would like to remind every woman listening to this episode that you are amazing and you are doing great. Keep doing you!
Dr. Sheva Assar provides tips on how we can be mindful about how we speak to ourselves. The tone we use when we're stressed or when things don't go well is very important. Dr. Sheva is a self confidence and relationship coach who helps women improve their relationship with themselves and others to reach their full potential.
She helps us understand how setting boundaries is beneficial to us and that we should be focusing on the health of the relationship with others. Dr. Sheva talks about "I Statements", where she explains the importance of the way we deliver our words to others and how it is going to land on the other person. If you're ready to take your life to the next level and curious to find out how, then this episode is for you!

I thought this "trend" was going to die down soon but we are still seeing recent posts about people doing The Fox Eye Trend on their social media. What is the Fox Eye Trend? Why is it racist? Marianne Mychaskiw discusses why The Fox Eye Trend is trash. Even after receiving negative attention from Asians, this trend is still circulating in social media. As Asians, specifically Pacific Islanders, it just triggered plenty of memories of bullies pulling their eyelids at us. Marianne is a beauty editor, freelance journalist, and brand copywriter for both digital and print where she covers topics about beauty, wellness, entertainment, lifestyle, and sex.
In this episode, we define the difference between appropriation vs. appreciation, why Asian features are not a trend, and what solutions we can arrive at to help raise awareness about these racial issues. Our goal is to always come from a place of love and we strive to do our best to stay informed, do our research, keep learning, and continue the discussion.

2020 has been quite a year and I find my usual self not as zen as I'd like and can be. I've been able to manage stress (and survive the remaining of the year) with the help of adaptogens like Ashwagandha, and I've felt positive results. I wouldn't be as stressed out or reactive in an overly unreasonable way within 30 minutes of taking Ashwagandha. It's definitely help me be more productive because my mood has improved. Hence, founder of JOYÀ, Ruth Elnekave's story inspired and intrigued me. She is a classically trained chef and Certified Holistic Nutritionist. Her career as a corporate finance lawyer on Bay Street (Toronto's Wall St.) in one of Canada's most prestigious international firm took a drastic toll on her body that she made a decision to quit her firm. After becoming a Certified Holistic Nutritionist and experiencing the positive changes in her health and immunity, JOYÀ was born.
JOYÀ is a functional food brand that offers multi-tasking products that delivers calm and boosts immunity, as well as reduce inflammation, boost radiance and provide stress support and cell protection from free radical damage.
Ruth shares with us why it's not too late to pivot in your career and why making that leap is truly rewarding. She also shares with us interesting information about stress, why we need stress and what type of stress is bad, and why your adaptogens need to have 3 specific elements for it to be really considered an adaptogen.

This week's Hello Beauty guest is Acaderma's CEO & Co-Founder, Dr. Shuting Hu. Dr. Hu is a post-doctoral researcher and scientist that developed Acaderma, a cosmeceutical brand that meets at the intersection of academic research and botanical skincare to find better solutions for healthy skin alternatives. Acaderma is a clean beauty brand that adopts a clean behavior from start to finish. What this means is that being clean to them is meaningful because they are mindful of how they develop their ingredients and other materials that ensure less pollution and waste to the environment. Their formulas are not only safe for people, but for the environment as well.
It should be noted that She was awarded the prestigious 2013 Henry Maso Young Cosmetic Scientist Award for her research of “Activity and mechanism of natural resorcinol type phenolics from the twigs of Cudrania tricuspidata as skin whitening agents” by The International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC). Dr. Hu's passion radiates as she talks about the careful development of her products. It takes her around 3 years to commercialize the ingredients and to scale up the technology! This shows how much importance is placed on research, study, and discovering novel ingredients to develop maximum efficacious products. Acaderma's Star Light Spot Corrector is my ultimate favorite (if I had to pick one, but I honestly am a fan and believer of her entire line!) because I have seen my dark spots noticeably decrease in size in just as quick as 3 days! As a scientist, she is able to bring her expertise to the brand as she knows what ingredients will work best together. I learned that it's enough to only use serums in your skincare regimen and that you can do away without using moisturizer! In this episode, we learn about one of their most special ingredient, the African Kinkeliba, which grows only in the West Africa Sub-Sahara region. She also talks about Acaderma's relationship with African local non-government organizations (NGOs) to provide educational opportunities and a platform with a social impact.

We are bombarded with so much information daily that it's difficult to determine if sources are reliable sometimes. Information is readily available at our fingertips that we just consume and consume and may not even have time to check the validity of the resources, especially when it's coming from a source that we admire, look up to, or just feel like we resonate with. I admit that I fall prey to this at times especially when it comes to diet and nutrition, which is why I am excited about this week's Hello Beauty guest, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon.
Dr. Lyon is a functional medicine physician specializing in the concept of muscle-centric medicine. She is also a speaker and media contributor, and has been a guest on The Doctors and written for Muscle & Fitness, Women's Health, Men's Health, and Harper's Bazaar. Dr. Lyon shares that we are under muscled, and not over-fat. She clarifies that we don't eat for protein but we eat for amino acid. She explains facts about going vegan/vegetarian for health or the environment, the fallacy on eating more meat, if we should only buy organic/grass-fed meat, and so much more. Dr. Lyon also gives concrete takeaways on what we can do if we're having trouble shedding those last 5 lbs or just want to age healthily by preventing the loss of muscle mass and strength, and her thoughts on collagen powder and biotin.

Huron is a men's skincare brand that's jam-packed with high-performing and effective ingredients, that doesn't break the bank. Matt struggled with acne growing up and playing sports in high school and football during college didn't help his skin at all. As he was more exposed to premium products as a young adult, he finally saw a difference and improvement on his skin. This compelled him to create his own products that would be available to every guy (and even woman) at every age and every stage of their life. His background in both finance and brand side of the consumer industry helped launch Huron on July 29, 2019. In this episode, Matt shares his advice as a CEO during these interesting times, why it isn't taboo anymore for men to talk about skincare, why Huron is an A+ personal care brand that everyone can rely on, and so much more.

This week's Hello Beauty guest is Pacifica's Founder, Brook Harvey-Taylor. Pacifica is, what you would say, the OG of 100% vegan, clean, and cruelty-free beauty because Brook created her brand over 23 years ago when indie brands or even the clean beauty space was not a thing yet. I first chatted with Joey last year on Episode #23, where he shared how he successfully built his eyebrow empire and studio in Fifth Avenue, New York.
