I talk to a lot of different people in my line of work. Whether it's meeting with folks one on one, or leading a coaching group, or being interviewed on television and podcasts- I get asked questions often. As a result, the same questions get asked over and over. And one of the number one questions I receive is this...
"Do I have anxiety?"
It's a bit of a funny question, to be honest. I mean, you tell me, right?! But I think I know what they really want to know. Sometimes we need guidance, sometimes we get a breakthrough.
In this podcast, I share more about the #1 Question I get asked and what I think people really mean when they ask it.

Maybe you need to let something go.
Or, change a habit.
Or, restore something lost.
Whatever it is, creating rituals is a potent method for helping you change your lifefor the better. It's often not enough to just tell ourselves we want to make these changes. We need something to back us up, something to add robustness to our good intentions. I'm a big believer in rituals. I use them in my own life and teach my clients about them in private practice and retreats as well.

4 Reasons You Feel Stuck and How to Get Unstuck
It is possible to get unstuck and free yourself!
In fact, if you are like me, meaning you want to live happier and more connected and in a peaceful state and contributing to this life and your fellow beings, it is imperative to get unstuck. Because life is too short to stay struggling.
And you know that feeling stuck equals struggling. Stuck doesn't feel good because you feel helpless and scared that you are stuck. You are not doing what you most desire. You isolate yourself from others when you are stuck. And, the worst consequence is that stuck-ness evokes a lot of negative self-judgment.

There might be a logistical way out of heavy stuck emotions: Clear your clutter. I recently read that clutter drains your energy and exhausts you. In a study recently published in California, researchers found that family members carried more stress hormones respective of how cluttered the house is, especially women who bare the brunt of the responsibility of managing the clutter.
Life is hard enough, save yourself the added stress of clutter by clearing it. You can do it. Just start with something small or follow the tips in this video.
People who have clutterless homes, feel more relaxed, get more done, enjoy more energy and quality family time. All which benefit your mind, heart, and soul.

Do you ever wonder why you get one anxiety after another? New anxieties aren't really all that new. It's the same ole' Anxiety trying to get your attention with a new shiny threat. Anxiety wants to stay in your life. It doesn't want to leave. It wants to keep you home and alone and feeling awful. That's what Anxiety wants. So...
Anxiety is constantly working hard to get or keep your attention with new anxieties. For the savvy person like you, Anxiety has to keep things fresh and new, because you've seen through the other lies it has told you in the past. So Anxiety has to come up with something else to get you to notice it. And boy, does it come up with some doozies.
Listen on why it does that and HOW it is able to do that. Once you know HOW new anxieties are allowed to come in, you will stop them in their tracks!

Changing Limiting Belief Systems and Healing Anxiety
"Anxiety and Belief Systems, What's the connection?"
Q: Do you have to heal beliefs systems from the past in order to heal from anxiety? Or build trust in the present.
Actually I don't see much of a difference.
Changing limiting beliefs is a powerful way to get rid of anxiety. The belief that you can't trust yourself is a big problem. Building trust in yourself is changing the belief that you are untrustworthy to one that you are trustworthy.
I hope this episode about changing limiting beliefs serves you in finding hope.

Why You Are Afraid of Other People Judging You- Who Cares What They Think?
"What anyone says about you is none of your damn business."
We spend a lot of time wondering and worrying about what other people are thinking (about us). Mostly because they could be pretty judgmental in their thoughts. I have news -it doesn't matter. What they think is a product of themselves - not of you. It is their own overworking mind and you are not responsible to fix it.
I hope this episode about fear of others judging you serves you in finding hope.

The best way to listen to your inner guidance is to quiet the rest of your mind. The part of your mind that dishes blame, worry, stress and negative self judgment. The fastest way to get out of that monkey mind, is to get into the body, through movement or grounding. Your heart and soul are constantly talking, it is just that your mind is too distracting.
In this podcast, I share with you how to clear your head, get out of your own mind, and get connected with your body! I hope this podcast about listening to your heart serves you in finding hope.

The not-so-secret, secrets of really happy people: Blow things off a little.
This is how you don't take things so personally. The secret to being happy is to take a step back and look at it from a distance. You can understand it when you are not in the chaos of it. See it differently, know it is not about you and that takes so much suffering away from you.
The secret to being happy is to be compassionate with yourself. It's understandable why you are upset. Love yourself through that. Then, take yourself out of the center and see why it happened, put little meaning around it. The secrets to being happy is to blow it off a little.
Not giving it much attention at all. So that is the secrets of really happy people.

Embrace Yourself Through Kindness
Let me go on the record saying I make mistakes.
I make mistakes, people!
Tons of them. And I feel things: Sadness, anger, frustration from small and big injustices.
Yes, I sweat the small stuff sometimes. I don't take care of myself sometimes and other times I am too lazy and selfish when I ought to be helping others more.
I'm far from perfect in every possible way. But I don't let my imperfection stop me from embracing ALL OF THAT. It's all me.
I believe in having compassion for this human body, these at-times unruly emotions, and my mistake-ridden behavior in its entirety. I embrace all of it, because it is all included in my wholeness.
"Embrace yourself" is not some tangeable thing to do. You don't have to like everything. You don't have to "condone" it. To embrace yourself, you have to STOP doing something, that we humans do way too much: negative self-judgment.
This can be confusing, when you notice something you wish that you didn't do. Use the guilt how it is meant to be used: to take action. Decide to do something different next time, repair what was damaged, or pay it forward. Once you take action there is no reason for the guilt. If you want to learn more about this check out my The Map to Whole Peace videos.
In the meantime listen to my podcast about embracing yourself.
Guilt is for taking action.
If we're going to grow tolerance in the world - and we need that! - we have to start with having tolerance with ourselves. Everything out in the world is a refelction of what is going on inside our mind.

What do you do when you are really, really worried about someone that you love who is in a lot of pain from depression, loss, illness or any hard time?
Worrying brings you down and doesn't help the other person. It validates their pain and it validates that there is something wrong with them. Your worry means that you love them but it doesn't help anyone to stay there. Don't go down and worry and get depressed yourself.
Instead love them up to you. You want to help someone with depression, so help them! Instead of worrying about them. Love them up to a happier state by noticing and reflecting back to them the skills and amazingness that you see in them.

Failure is epidemic. Do you know why? It’s not because people are inadequate. It’s because they think they are.
We have some impossible standards that we measure ourselves against. And this has us beating ourselves up, blaming ourselves, and notices our deficits, any chance we get.
From my experience, we try so hard to get ourselves better, but we forget the way to healing is compassion and forgiveness. So we stay blocked from peace.
In this podcast, I am going to explain how to forgive and let go of your past and why you deserve it, plus give you practical steps on how to let go.

To calm from anxiety in twenty seconds, we have to know why anxiety is sustained in the first place. The biggest reason anxiety stays with us is because of the thoughts in our head. That is what sustains it – us freaking out. I know anxiety’s scary but it needs you to be scared for it to continue to destruct your life. Anxiety is curable. It's not something that you have to live through forever.
You may not think you can stop the anxiety, but you can. I've walked many people through getting over their anxiety and I know that you can change this. In this podcast I'm going to show you how to calm from anxiety in 20 seconds.

Who I am? What do I want? What am I supposed to do in the world? How do I find myself? Do you ever ask yourself these questions? These are heavy questions because we think there’s one answer to them.
We think there’s one answer to them. And we think we don’t know the answer. Our identity is constantly changing, moment to moment depending on how we feel, what we’re thinking about, and what we’re giving our attention to. This can leave you confused on how to find yourself.
We want to know what is important to us in our life, what’s important to us in our world and how to bring that out and have that be part of our interactions. When we notice those things that are really important to us, then we begin to take action with a conscious purpose towards those values.
So when you’re asking yourself who you are, just take a little breath. You don’t have to figure it all out. It’s not rocket science. It’s not a big mystery. I'll tell you why and how to find yourself in today's video.

Sometimes, what happens is we’re afraid of change because we're afraid of losing things. We're afraid that if we don't like the new change, we can't go back to how things were before. But, most of the time, you can. You can go back to the old thing. We’re so scared that we don't realize that.
Remember, when one opportunity passes, if its meant for you it's going to come back for you again. We don't have to worry so much about it. We just have to trust ourself and live.
If you trusted yourself and you felt a little more powerful, change wouldn’t intimidate you like it does now.
There are two ways to think about change so you can approach it in a way that's powerful and loving and adventurous and I share them in my video today.
Look at those skills you have and look at change as an adventure and it'll change everything. You CAN make changes in your life and not be afraid.

We’re going to talk about something in this episode that's really dear and near to my heart because I see so many people suffering. Relieving emotional pain is so important for people to feel better so they can stop self harm.
When they're suffering so intensely sometimes they decide to hurt themselves. They do something that brings them to the present moment – some tangible pain because the other pain, that emotional pain that they're feeling is so overwhelming, they need to do something about it to relieve the emotional pain.
They need to take some kind of action to ground them into the present moment into reality because they're so up in their head, overwhelmed by the anxiety, stress and the sadness – the deep desperate sadness that they’re feeling, so they hurt themselves in some physical way.
There's many other things that can take you out of your head, stop self harm, and bring you into the physical. I'm going to share something very simple in this episode that you can do. It’s going to put you in the present moment, ground you, and help you feel so much better.

Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by all the trauma happening in the world? There’s so much war going on, and then there’s earthquakes and tsunamis and all these other things happening in our world. It can make us feel so overwhelmed and stressed out.
Do you know why it’s overwhelming? It's because we feel like it’s happening to us. We have this skill in empathy that we can feel what other people are feeling. When we see people suffering we feel like it's us.
Sometimes we get so frozen in this fear and overwhelm that it holds us back from doing things that could help the situations out in the world. We get so stuck being overwhelmed by all the trauma that we’re frozen in our lives. So then, we’re not happy and we’re not helping anybody. It’s like a lose-lose situation. When we’re frozen in our trauma and fear, we’re no good to anybody.
You have some things to help the world and I have some things to help the world. We don’t want all that fear and stress to overwhelm us so we can’t shine through and make the world a better place.
Today I talk about how I deal with trauma and how it may help you deal with it, too. If you can take a step back and see everything symbolically, then maybe you can take steps to educate yourself and think about what you can do to make changes towards peace in the world.

Do you ever wonder why anxiety comes out of the blue? You know that stress, anxiety, and overwhelming feeling we sometimes feel when we weren't even doing anything that caused it? This often leads us to really judge ourselves and think something's wrong with us. We may even think we're crazy or mentally ill.
You are not crazy and you are not mentally ill. This is what is happening – You know that our fear is biological. It’s a biological response to something dangerous in our environment or a perceived danger in our environment. What many people don't actually know is the amygdala, that little part of our brain that triggers the parasympathetic nervous system response, works on body memory. So if our body remembers something is dangerous or there's some correlation between our body memory and something in the past that has been dangerous before, either emotionally or physically, it begins to trigger that response.
In this episode, I'm going to tell you what you can do when this happens and why there is nothing wrong with you.

I'm doing something challenging and wanted to share it with you all today. I was invited to be in a self help movie and feel kind of modest about it. Being modest can hold us back from things that we may want to try because we don't want to share about what we're doing and expose ourselves to people. All day long our brain psyches us out about trying new things. It tells us lies and holds us back.
Find out how I handle this when it comes up and what you can do about it when it comes up for you, so that you can take action and do something that you're scared of.

Do you have that inner critic that is just driving you crazy every day? “You can't do this. They're not going to like you. You can't handle it.” Does this sound familiar? This kind of berating is going through our minds all the time. It’s not helping us in this world. This is so awful. Can you imagine if somebody else was saying that to you?
You can silence your inner critic. It just takes a little bit of discipline and practice. When that critic comes into your mind, expect it. When you start to doubt and judge yourself negatively, expect it and have some compassion for yourself.
We all want some understanding and validation. If we don't have validation, we hold on to things really tightly. If we give ourselves that validation, we can let it go really easily. I've always tried to get validation from other people. Then, I realized I could just validate myself by giving myself some compassion.
Our life is about what we pay attention to, so if you want to shine, focus on paying attention to the things that help you do that.

Have you ever wondered how to love yourself when you don't like yourself very much?
We've got all these opinions about ourselves and compare ourselves to everyone around. We think that means that we don't love ourselves. I think the problem is we don't really know what loving ourselves means.
For me, it means just being in the present moment with myself and not having judgments at all. When we don't judge ourselves, we're having compassion for ourselves. Sometimes we don't like ourselves very much when we’re suffering immensely. But then we really desire people to understand us. Or we might defend our problem sometimes.
There is somewhere in you that does think that you're worthy and that you're worth not being treated this way. If you feel that sense of worth somewhere deep inside, you do have self-love.
We're alive and our life has some purpose. Right now, it may not feel like it has purpose, but we can change that in a heartbeat. If you get caught up in all those negative self-judgments about yourself, you’ll really feel like you don't like yourself when that's not even the case.
You are a human being in this world, you're worthy and you are amazing.

You know how fear stops you from going out with your friends or trying something new? Those skills and those talents that you have – fear stops you from sharing those with the world. This doesn’t feel good and it’s really upsetting to you. Many times we hate to think that we’re missing out on stuff, so we just say we don’t really care about it and use excuses like, “there’s just no point.” But, there is a point.
There’s a huge purpose to doing all kinds of stuff. Connecting to other people, experiencing new things, and developing ourselves is what life is all about and we don’t want to miss out on that.
Here are four things that you could do when you are sick and tired of letting fear stop you in your life:
1. Commit to getting over your fear.
It’s deciding that you want to do this and you’re not going to let anything stop you. People all the time overcome their fears, overcome their anxiety or any of these kind of problems. And don’t say that you’re worse than all of them because I swear, you’re not.
2. Break it down.
Fear has all kinds of power and its built itself up in your mind and in your life. It builds itself up with all kinds of evidence that you feel is true and tells you you should be afraid. Anxiety gets so invasive in our heads. We have to clarify what we’re afraid of. The anxiety usually doesn’t have too much beyond it and if we break that down we could see that there’s not as much to be afraid of.
3. Take action.
Do something, even if you’re just pacing back and forth. Go take a walk or pace, any repeating movement will help you feel better. Take action in terms of contributing to whatever you’re afraid of. Do something that would counter that fear or counter the result of that. When we’re paralyzed in fear or feel helpless, the fear just gets bigger. We have to take some action to help it go down.
4. Love yourself through it.
This is not something to beat yourself up about. It happens to all of us. This is something so many people feel and you can feel better. I’ve got myself over the worst anxiety that I ever heard of. I loved myself through it, so I want you to love yourself through it too.
If you do these four things, commit to it, break it down, take action and love yourself through it, you will find that you are going to get better.

Fire is a powerful way to have a ritual, but also it is metaphoric. Destroying one thing, so something else can bloom and grow. Rituals can really help you release anything that you'd like let go of so you can finally be free of it. If we want to decide something or change something, a ritual helps us create a new commitment for ourselves.
Take some time for yourself and think about what you would put in this bag. What do you want to pray for? What do you want to let go of?

Sometimes when teens are starting to have their independence, they get a little bit overwhelmed with obligation and responsibility. And they're highly motivated to resist those things.
These are some things that you have to do to get your child motivated. First, have some confidence in them. You have to believe that they can do it so that they can believe that they can do it. Two, you’ve got to be the bridge. They have to start to do stuff for themselves, but you have to be the bridge and encourage them. The third is to teach them that responsibility equals freedom. The more responsible they act the more that they could ask for from you.
The next thing is sleep schedule. Have them sleep at night instead of during the day. If they’re up during the day, everybody’s up and moving and they feel like part of the world. The next thing is the “carrot”, having something that would motivate them. You have to give them something that’s important enough to supersede that “I don’t care”. The last thing is to make little goals instead of big goals. Give your teen little goals that they could accomplish and feel that sense of accomplishment.
I hope these helped you get that teen up and moving and live a happier and healthier life.

What is the meaning of life? I've concluded that this world is about learning.
Experiences can be so scary, but if you look at them symbolically and think about what you can learn from experiences, it makes it a lot different. There's two things that I focus on in my life to help me learn, grow, and live with vitality – challenge and connection.
1. Challenge
Three thousand years ago, people were keen on exploring and expanding their world. They just took a boat out to open sea. They couldn't see land and they didn't know how long they'd be sailing.
They took these risks because they liked to be challenged.
2. Connection
We all want to be connected with each other. We're social beings. People who are really isolated don't have a sense of self and end up being depressed and very anxious. We're all about having relationships with other people, and those relationships reflect back that good in us. Obviously, if we have relationships with people who are mean to us, it’s not really helpful and makes us feel really terrible. But, if we have relationships with people who lift us up, that is the meaning of life.

I have never felt so helpless as I do when my children are anxious. You know, I see that they are physically safe, but know that in their little struggling minds, they don't feel so safe. In fact, they feel the opposite of safe and this is painful and overwhelming.
As parents, it is our job to keep our children safe. But how can we save them from their own minds?
Here are 7 ways you can help your child overcome their anxiety:
1. Model confidence and calmness.
Listen. Children take their cue from you. My daughter often worries about being picked up from school -- as if I would forget her. Each time, I explain why I trust myself to pick her up and tell her what the school would do to keep her safe if I didn't. Once, she said to me, "You are never worried about anything." I told her to look at my face when she is worried. "Only if I am worried, do you need to be." Her fears are huge to her, but they wane when she can't convince me to be afraid.
2. Have confidence in them.
Be confident that your children are OK, even if they have anxiety. Anxiety is just an experience, and every event with anxiety is merely an opportunity to get rid of it. Remind your kids of the skills and knowledges you see in them that have helped them shrink their anxiety. This will help them to step into those skills more readily. Confidence, like worry, is contagious. You'll want this to pass on.
3. Talk out their fears.
Children's anxieties loom much larger when they don't say them out loud. Kids worry that if they talk about them, they might get worse. Usually, they get better. Inside the mind, worries are ten times as scary. Sometimes kids are angry or disinterested and don't realize that it is an anxiety causing the problem. If they could name it, it helps immeasurably, so ask questions. Then you can reassure them, or laugh at how silly the worry is.
4. Personify the anxiety.
Kids often feel that anxiety is part of their identity. This makes them feel more out of control. Giving the worries a separate identity keeps the child's identity intact. It helps kids feel empowered because now they are not fighting themselves. "Out there," the anxiety looks different and is less scary. Sometimes this is all you need to do.
5. Convince him or her that he or she need not be afraid.
For example, if they are afraid of you getting sick, list for them the things you do to keep yourself healthy. This will work best when you are convinced. Do your own work first. Your child's fear often reflects your fears. (Our children often live out our issues.) Work on convincing yourself you need not be afraid. This will help them more than anything.
6. Take action.
Action conquers fear. Helplessness makes us feel out of control. Giving them something to do can help them counter fear. For example, in response to tragedy, making food or another donation can replace helplessness with helpfulness, giving children confidence.
7. Make them do hard things.
Our protection instinct has us wanting to save them from struggle. But this often lets fear win. When your child does not choose to do something because of fear, it is sometimes important to push them to do it. This is your job as their parent to teach them they can be confident in themselves by doing things they don't want to do (or are too scared to do).
Love helps all fear. Whatever you do, it is most important to trust yourself, trust your child, and stay connected. Our kids are going through their own spiritual journeys, and they are going to have struggles because this is what helps them grow. As parents, we cannot save them from every problem. They have to experience problems to learn skills for dealing with worse ones that may come later.
Love them through their struggles and trust that they will be okay. Struggles are just experiences of the mind. All of it is recoverable.
Things happen to us, but we get through. Teach your children skills and let them have their experiences. You can still be there to love and gently (and sometimes not so gently) guide them.

Some of you have keys on your keychain and you don't even know what they're for anymore. Sometimes we hang on to problems the same kind of way. One thing that we often confuse holding on to crumbs with is our self-worth.
When somebody hurts me, I sometimes get really obsessed with it and have conversations with that person, fantasizing that I'm getting validation back. This is what we're looking for. We're looking for validation that it wasn't okay, some kind of acknowledgement.
If we let go without that acknowledgement, it feels like we're not worthy of being treated well, so we hold on to stuff to make sure it wasn't okay someone did something to hurt us.
When something bad happens or someone is mean to us, we often blame ourselves. These kinds of situations are really chaotic and our mind wants to make sense of them. The fastest way to do that is to go to blame and we tend to blame ourselves.
Really, at the same time as knowing that someone hurt us, and that's invalidating, we're invalidating ourselves. Instead, we could start by validating ourselves by understanding that it wasn't okay someone did something hurtful.
The most important thing you can do is allow yourself to feel hurt. Once you allow yourself to be hurt, you’ll feel validated and it is easy to let go.

Summary:
Building your self-confidence is a skill that you can learn. It's something that you can build if you work on it. The most important thing that you can do to build your self-confidence is practice. If you try something and practice it then you build confidence in yourself in doing it.
One of the best things you could do to build your self-esteem and self-confidence is commit to something small every day that you could definitely do. Then every day you do it, and you see yourself committed to that thing, that's going to build your self-esteem naturally.
The second thing you can do to build your self-confidence is use affirmations like, “it's possible that there could be something good about me.” When you repeat the affirmation, you begin to build your self-confidence.
The third thing is to hang out with people who see the good in you and surround yourself with people who are uplifting and happy and can reflect back the wonderful person that you are.
Try these three ways to build confidence in yourself and see what opens up for you.

Why you think it is so hard to feel -- There are many reasons we don't want to feel a feeling, but it usually leads back to guilt and fear.
Thinking something is wrong with what we feel can cause so many problems in our lives. An unfelt, unresolved feeling, especially one we judge to be pathological can reek havoc on our emotions, relationships, and identity.
The stories about the feelings and what happened – blaming ourselves and blaming others – that fill our head, have us run away from feelings. This is why it takes so long to heal. We think a feeling is unbearable, yet we are willing to endure years of self torture with stories of blame, fear, and guilt cluttering our minds.
When we allow ourselves to feel, without the story, just feel, it can go away faster than you ever imagine. I'll explain in this podcast.

There are four ways that creativity helps the brain and I encourage everybody to take on something creative in their life.
1. Physically
Pain starts in the brain rather than the joints or muscles. When people are engaging in a creative activity or social activity, they experience less pain.
It also stimulates those parts of the brain that we need stimulating to help us recover from our past.
2. Mentally
Doing something takes up that mental space from other stressful things that are often going through our minds.
3. Emotionally
When we do something creative, we see the product of our labors and can fell good about it. This helps us trust ourselves and raises our self-esteem.
4. Spiritually
Engaging in something creative helps us live out our life purpose. It helps us realize the gifts that we have and share them with the world. We become more connected and more purposeful in our life and this helps us mind, body and soul. This changes the way we see the world and the way we see ourselves.
There are so many creative ways to heal your brain physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Try something easy today.

If you're not happy in your relationship, it affects your mind, body and soul. Here's four questions you can ask yourself to get started in thinking about your future.
1. Am I staying because I don't want to be alone?
We always think that it's this person or nothing. That's just not the case. The other possibilities are unknown and scary but definitely not nothing.
2. I am beating myself up?
Do you feel like you failed? Making a conscious decision to leave a relationship, or to stay, doesn't mean failure. Stop judging yourself because that just makes this situation a whole lot harder.
3. Am I afraid about what other people think?
If people react badly to you breaking up with someone that they love, it's more about their emotional issues than it is about you. You can't change people so don't worry too much.
4. Are there power issues?
This could be very subtle or outwardly violent. You want to get yourself some support so you could see the situation in a different way.

Summary of podcast:
We all get angry sometimes.
Anger freaks people out. They don't want to feel it anymore and they feel like that's not the way they want to be in the world.
The way to get rid of your anger is to allow yourself to feel angry. There's always a reason for it. Somebody hurt you or somebody wasted your time or disrespected you. What happens is, we get angry and then we judge ourself about it.
Do you know what that does? That just makes it more powerful over us. If you allowed yourself to feel and understood your original anger as totally appropriate, then you'd have compassion for yourself. This changes anger. It dissipates.
When we're angry, we are upset about something that is precious to us that has been lost or threatened. If you know what this is and acknowledge and validate it, then your anger dissolves.
Having compassion yourself is the key.
When you allow anger, you stop holding on to it. And in this way, you're letting that you, that you want to be, shine through.

Summary:
About a year ago, I made a video about OCD and it caused a lot of controversy because I think people didn't understand it. I've been working with people with OCD for a really long time and I've known a lot of people really close to me that have obsessions and compulsions that lead them to do patterns.
Sometimes they're just doing patterns and it's mildly annoying and other times it is so annoying and overwhelming that it takes up a big portion of their lives.
This causes a huge amount of suffering.
People come and go into this state of being. Often people stay in it for a really long time and it gets worse, and there's less and less they feel they can do in their lives. What I notice about all of these people is that there's something that drives that.
Usually it's guilt and shame.
I understand this because I see this as the root of so many problems in our life -- fear, guilt, and shame. If we really unpack them, these roots are under all of our problems -- all of them. So why wouldn't they be the root of OCD?
What I started to notice when I'm working with people with OCD and OCPD is that there's this guilt and shame about doing their patterns. Then, they get really frustrated, overwhelmed, and hate the fact they have this problem. This frustration and overwhelm is bigger in energy than the original pattern, which makes them more obsessed.
The more we pay attention to something because we're frustrated with it, the more energy we give it, and the more obsessed we get with it. If we can get rid of some of that shame and guilt about doing the patterns, we can cut them down exponentially.
Guilt and shame feeds the OCD. It gives it more power. Many people are angry and get really shamed about it, which increases their anger. They do this before they even realize it, so they just think they have an anger problem.
When I'm working with people, we ultimately want to stop their patterns, but first I want to take away the guilt and shame about doing them. When we take the energy out of the pattern and obsession, people stop them so much easier than when they’re addressing it, trying to get themselves to stop.
Of course some patterns do hurt or harm you, so we want to stop those. But those little patterns that just drive you nuts, like making sure all of the drawers are closed or flipping the light on and off ten times -- you're not hurting anybody. Right now, try to take the guilt and shame out of it and see if you could take the power out of it.

Summary:
For so long in my life, I felt like I was trying to heal myself while I was in the midst of everything else going on. Raising my babies, building my business, nurturing my relationship, and honing my skills as a counselor. I was in survival mode big time and I wasn't really giving myself the time that I needed.
Do you ever feel overwhelmed by your life? Do you ever wonder why you don't take care of yourself? Why getting tasks done means more than healing and feeling calm? It's because healing isn't tangible. You can't check it off a list. It takes time and concentration.
This is what I learned about giving myself time to heal from being overwhelmed and burned out:
1. I need respite and acknowledgement.
I haven't made time for respite. I had to have a break from surviving my life and spent some time with myself to reflect. I created a space in my home where I could meditate and made myself spend time there. I scheduled a walk into my day and I periodically went on retreat. The first retreat that I went on changed my life.
2. I had to get a community to support and acknowledge me.
My girlfriends rocked for this. It's because we're only ourself in relationships so we need to see ourself through other people's eyes. And when people acknowledge you, it lifts you up. When you're isolated, you just go deeper into depression. See, we're social beings and having witnesses to our journey is so important to us as humans.
This is why I offer live retreats. They are a break from life where you can focus on being your own healer and you can build a community of like minded folks who could become your touchstones long after the retreats over.
Some of my best friends I made while on retreat and I've seen some of my retreatants make incredible connections too.
I want to encourage you all to make some time for yourself to take a break from that hustle and bustle. To meditate or walk. Or just sit with your tea in the morning. And make sure that you have a friend or two, or a community, that you could feel like you belong to. Surround yourself with those who can lift you up and love you up.

That is how I learn, by feeling and experiencing. Show me a breathing technique and I have to try it right away to see how it feels in my body and see if I feel different after it.
Give yourself the next five minutes to relax.
I want you to experience this breathing technique for yourself.
Take a moment to scan yourself and see how you feel.
How intense or stressed do I feel?
What is on my mind?
Is there any pain or tension?
Don't dwell here, simply register it as if you are an objective witness.
Now, push play and close your eyes. I'll explain it all.

Creative, generous projects are healing
1. Creativity uses brain space.
Depression and anxiety need brain space to exist. They use your thoughts to breed more negativity and fear. If you were preoccupied with something purposeful and productive, there would be less time to feel down or afraid. Being creative needs loads of brain space because you are problem solving. This gets your frontal lobe working and heals the effects of loss and trauma on the brain.
2. Connecting with others makes you not feel so alone.
Isolation compounds any problem that you have, because the self only exists in relationships. And connecting to others eases our negative emotions. (Not abusive people.) Connecting heals the heart.
3. Giving back gives new meaning to a sad story.
When something happens, our mind want to makes sense of it. There are many tragedies that happened that make little sense. When something helpful comes out of it, a trauma or loss can have new meaning beside just senselessness. This can be powerfully healing. The person that is lost can now live on or the person who has been victimized has a purpose and identity beyond what happened.

Summary:
I bet you're all wondering why it is so hard to heal from emotional pain and turmoil. Here are four main barriers to healing from emotional pain and how to break through them.
1. You're worried that it might feel worse than before.
2. You wonder if you deserve it.
3. You think that the other person who hurt you will get away with it scot-free.
4. You are not quite sure it's possible for you to heal.
It is possible! Don't let these barriers hold you down any longer.

Worrying means we love. But it's not really helping us or the person we are worried about. It brings us both down. What if you love people up to you instead of worrying down to them? This can save lives, including yours.
Love is very powerful. People just need you to be with them and understand. Sometimes worry gets in the way of being with people, it's too much and you may hold back. This makes everything worse. Loving people up to you, helps everyone.
