The Bible is a book (or more accurately, a library) unlike any other. At times it is best read slowly and out loud, savoring each word. At other times, we ought to read it in large portions, so as to encounter it’s broader story and plot line. In some moments, we need to linger on one simple phrase, allowing it to slowly seep into our heart. And at other times, we need to sit upright, put on our reading glasses, and study it. For this week’s spiritual practice, our goal is to engage the Bible with our minds by learning to study the Bible. But why bother studying the Bible? For followers of Jesus, the answer is simple: Jesus was a student and teacher of the Bible and lived as if the Bible was authoritative. And if that is true, and the Bible is indeed authoritative for us today, then we ought to think carefully about the text and what it means; in other words, we need to study it. Because while the Bible is many things, it is certainly not simple. This means that there is not one clear-cut formula for studying the Bible. Instead, there are a number of approaches to studying and peeling back the multi-layered meanings of the Bible over a lifetime.

Often, God’s PROTECTION comes through his DIRECTION. God helps us set up BOUNDARIES that will keep us from getting BURNED.

The two foundational things that drive most of our lives: APPROVAL and ACHIEVEMENT. God can do amazing things in places where you aren’t EXPECTING it!

We can so easily identify with both Jacob and Esau. Like Esau, you might be about to trade what you know is most important for a bowl of stew. Like Jacob, maybe you pretend to be someone else because you think you need to pretend to be blessed. But God wants us to lose our need to pretend! To be the parents, spouses, people that God wants us to be, we need to drop the masks. Jesus can't minister to our masks. Jesus can't save your selfie.

Refueling is not a command to do more, it’s an invitation to BE CONNECTED.

Prayer is the only response to God when our human hearts are convinced that God’s presence creates super natural power to help us live out His divine purposes.

God always meets us WHERE WE ARE and slowly moves us along into DEEPER THINGS. God is not irritated by our persistent, consistent prayer! God is honored by our persistent, consistent prayer!

How it is possible that we were created to be connected with each other, and yet we find ourselves so disconnected? The good news is that the Bible addresses this! And I think the Bible teaches something that perhaps many of us were never taught. One of God’s greatest attributes doesn’t show up in any Systematic Theology textbook. But this is something that is so critical to understand, and if we get this, this could change how we experience connection with both God and humanity!

Extraordinary generosity is extraordinarily powerful!

EVERYBODY matters to God, whether or not God matters to them.

Ever wonder what areas you are trusting in God the least? What you fear the most reveals where you trust God the LEAST.

Jesus is WAY more concerned about your salvation than your status! You are NOT the Label!

THE DEVIL IS A LIAR! He will whisper that you need to give up, to quit, that you have no worth or value, that you are ugly and no one loves you. So how do we combat those lies? Pastor Erik dives into Romans 8 as we learn that our sins are forgiven and so we can know that our eternity is secure! That we can set our minds on the Spirit and be filled with the peace of God. We can know we are significant and valued because our God is for us! And we can trust that NOTHING can separate us from the love of God!

The fastest way to kill something special is to COMPARE it to something else. Comparing does two things: it either makes you feel SUPERIOR or INFERIOR. Neither honors God!

Temple thinking always gravitates to RULES and RITUALS. The Jesus model is centered on the YOU beside YOU. Once you place your faith in Jesus Christ, you are fine with God and God is fine with you!

Movement brings life and it is DOING that makes the DIFFERENCE in your experience with your heavenly father!

Are we APPEASING the crowds or PLEASING Christ? UNITY is not UNIFORMITY!

DESPERATE people are DRAWN to Jesus!

What is it that you need to let go? Pastor Erik dives into the story of Joseph, the adopted father of Jesus. Joseph had to let go of being misunderstood, let go of his future, and let go of the results. In the same way, we need to let go and trust and follow Jesus.

Pastor Erik wraps up our study on the life of Elijah by diving into 1 Kings 19. We learn that EVERYONE spends time in the wilderness, but that God STRENGTHENS us in the wilderness. Not only does he strengthen us, he will MEET us in the wilderness! What can we learn from Elijah on how to deal with discouragement and depression? God tells Elijah: get some rest, replace the lies you have been telling yourself with My truth, and get back to doing what prophets are supposed to do!

Pastor Erik continues our series as we dive into 1 Kings 18. We learn that the things of this world PROMISE what only God can truly PROVIDE.

Sometimes we miss God’s PROVISION because it’s disguised as a PROBLEM. We keep sending back the package God is giving us, because we don’t like how it looks! PROVISION and PERSPECTIVE are linked! God led Elijah through 3 Seasons of Preparation: 1. Isolated Pain (I Kings 17:1) 2.Total Dependance (I Kings 17:2-3) 3. Unconditional Obedience (I Kings 17:4-16)

We all want to leave a legacy! But how do we do that? We need to understand that what we do today will echo into future generations. MAIN IDEAS: -There’s a difference between FORGIVENESS and RECONCILIATION -The essence of manhood is RESPONSIBILITY. -It’s okay to TEST people before you TRUST them. -Actions don’t just speak louder than words. Actions ECHO into the next generation. -You never look more like God than when you FORGIVE!

No one PLANS to be unfaithful, but HALF of all marriages will experience it. So what do we do to beat the odds? Listen to what Pastor Erik has to say!

We all have areas of our lives that we would like to see CHANGED. Pastor Erik dives into Acts 4 as we learn that the Holy Spirit changes us from COWARDLY to COURAGEOUS. We learn that we are to pray for boldness and to pray for miracles! We are going to pray BOLD PRAYERS, believing that we serve a great God who is able to do far more than we could ever ask or imagine!

In order for the gospel to SPREAD, the Church had to be STRETCHED! The STRENGTH is in the STRETCH! You need to put into PRACTICE the POWER you have received! Pastor Erik continues our series of looking at the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the early church by diving into Acts 3.

We learned what Psalm 42 has to say to those who feel spiritually DRY (verse 2), DISCOURAGED (verse 5), or DROWNING (verse 7). This is a CONDITION that we will ALL face at some point, so we need to know the common CAUSES and some CURES we can learn by looking at Psalm 42.

Something inside all of us longs to have someone love us for who we are. Something inside of us longs to be a part of a community that accepts and welcomes us. Something inside of us longs to live a life filled with purpose. Where do those longings come from? Pastor Erik dives into Psalm 86 to find the answers to those longings we all have!

Jesus is a shepherd who became a sheep so that you and I could be raised up and become a friend of God! He doesn’t want you to just be a sheep. He wants you to be his friend. He wants you to feel his love and life. He doesn’t just want obedience; he wants fellowship.

The Church isn’t a cruise ship; the church is a battleship! You see- on a battleship, everyone on that ship knows why they are there and they all have a role to play. They have a MISSION. Jesus too, gave the Church a mission: to go into hostile territory, to rescue the captives, and to push back the enemy. Pastor Erik shares why at Mosaic we want to help everyone SERVE OTHERS.

As we study the life of Esther, it is apparent the she had the Favor of God on her life. But that's not to say that she had an easy life! Far from it! Pastor Erik dives into Esther chapter 8 so we can learn from Esther and her adopted father Mordecai on how to become good leaders and stewards of the blessings and favor of God.

The story of Esther is amazing, but imagine this: imagine the moment where King Ahasuerus looked at Haman and said, “Take this man and crucify him now!” Imagine if in that moment, Esther walked over to Haman and said, “I forgive you and I love you, and King, I will take his place and I’ll be crucified for my enemy, so that he can become one of God’s people.” That would have been amazing...but that’s what Jesus did for us!

It is unlikely that any of us will ever be in a situation as dire as Esther, but every one of us faces Defining Moments in our own lives! Some defining moments come unexpectedly and pass quickly, yet with far-reaching consequences. Pastor Erik dives into the third and fourth chapter of the Book of Esther as we learn how to miss what God wants to teach us when we face Defining Moments in our own lives.

Pastor Erik continued our series "Esther: God's Perfect Work through Imperfect People." We looked at Esther 2 and learned that like Esther who was adopted by Mordecai, those who follow Jesus are adopted into God's family. Although Mordecai was an imperfect father and failed Esther, our Heavenly Father will never let us down or fail us!

On Easter Sunday we wrapped up our journey through the Gospel of Luke as we learned that although each of us is prone to DRIFT, Jesus DISRUPTS and enters into our story so that we can receive new life through him!

On Good Friday, Pastor Erik dove into Luke 23 as we learned that the reason Jesus came was to SEEK and SAVE the lost. Like any good movie, there's MORE TO THE STORY as we explored the story of the cross.

Jesus tells Peter, "Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” God allows each of us to be sifted, but that PREPARES us for our PURPOSE. And Jesus lets us know he is praying for us and will never let us go even while we go through seasons of sifting.

COMFORT never leads to the CROSS. But the cross was Christ's CALLING! You and I have to forsake comfort to step into our calling! Jesus came to CHALLENGE us and to lead us out of comfort so that we could be conformed into the likeness of Christ!

Brian Stevens reminds us that the triumphal entry by Jesus on Palm Sunday was not a fun little parade. It was an epic proclamation by Jesus! Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem COMMITTED him to the cross. Jesus calls each one of us to COMMIT to the Kingdom of God! (Luke 19)

We are wrapping up our study of the Gospel of Luke by diving into Luke 19. We see that because Jesus invited Zacchaeus into RELATIONSHIP with him, that led to REPENTANCE which led to RESTITUTION being made which led to a whole village REJOICING because of how Jesus changed a life!

It is way easier to be a peacekeeper than a peacemaker! So what does it mean, and what does it take to bring peace to our homes and the world around us?

The world says, "Follow your heart and everything will work out." Listen in this week as we dive into what it means to protect our hearts and to live a life that is aligned with God's will for us and our homes.

Jesus' Beatitudes start off with, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied." Listen in as we look at what it means to be blessed as a family that is centered on Christ.

The parable of the Good Samaritan is one of the most well known stories in the Bible. Almost everyone has heard the phrase “Good Samaritan.” You’ll hear on the news how someone did a good deed and they will call him a “Good Samaritan.” The parable of the Good Samaritan has so penetrated our culture that I think we have lost sight of what it originally meant to the first century listeners of Jesus.

Reach out to Jesus in faith, as the woman in Luke 8 did, so that the power of God might be unleashed in your life. Follow the example of Jairus: run to Jesus, cast yourself upon him, and invite him into your home and your life. Respond with faith, not fear! If our faith is in Jesus, then one day we will resurrect from death and sin and suffering and sickness will be no more! We’ll be forgiven and cleansed! We will see Jesus’ face, hear Jesus’ voice, feel Jesus’ touch, and we’ll sit down to feast with him.

Jesus calms a storm and casts out demons. Jesus came to liberate those who are taken captive in the cosmic battle between God and Satan. The saved man obeys Jesus and stays behind to boldly preach his story about what Jesus did for him. How can you share your story of what God has done for you? (Luke 8:22-39)
