He has discovered something about the Lunar crown that not only changes the dynamic of the war but also changes its origin. As Dr. Erland explains his discovery, he also reveals his secret identity to Cress. But, before she has time to process this news, it is time to say Goodbye.

As the royal wedding approaches, Cinder and the gang are executing their plans to stop the cereomony and kidnap the groom.  After a run in with a strange girl, we leave Cinder and Iko to see the situation from Sybils perspective. As we contemplate what Levana may have on her dating profile, a palace guard must deliver the news that the wedding has been delayed. This announcement comes with information that ignites a spark in Sybil and she excuses herself to handle the problem.

Meanwhile, Kai and Torin are waiting in their quarters for the ceremony, though they are not as bothered by the delay. A surprise visit from Cinder changes the atmosphere in the room and the conversation readers have been waiting two books for finally takes place. But before we can have a romantic moment between Cinder and Kai, reality sets in and they are once again reminded of their stations in life.

Meanwhile, Cress and Wolf are waiting for the signal to go down to the control room. Wolf guides Cress through the palace and protects her from guards while Cress disables cameras and security measures. When they arrive at the control room, it is time for the next phase of the plan.

Iko trades places with another android and is disguised and ready to enter the wedding undercover. As she borrows clothes from another android, Cress and Wolf get to know each other a little better as they try to remain inconspicuous at the palace.  Cress grows overwhelmed with the magnitude of the palace and its ballroom, and Wolf helps stabilize her as they await their next move.

The day of the Royal Wedding has finally arrived, and Cinder and The Rampion Crew are ready to put their plan into motion. Cinder visits her old apartment to steal wedding invitations from Adri.  While visiting her former home, she is overwhelmed with the desire to find an emotional response from Adri.  As she gets carried away with the power of her Lunar gift, she finally realizes why Lunars do not like mirrors.

Meanwhile, Iko in her new body arrives at a warehouse full of smartly dresses escort droids ready to serve at the Royal Wedding. Iko must infiltrate the wedding by hiding with the other escort droids, but in order to do that, another escort droid must leave. As she tries to find a unique and inconspicuous way to take the place of another android, Iko takes a moment to truly enjoy being human.

Cinder and the Rampion Crew arrive at the New Beijing safe house ready to infiltrate the palace through the secret underground tunnel.  Cinder is not entirely confident in their plan, but she knows there is no time left to deliberate now.

While Sybil and the Queen question Scarlet for information about Cinder and her whereabouts, a crowd of blood-thirsty and eclectically dressed Lunars watch. A surprise whispering voice begs for the Queen to spare Scarlet, and the last we see is a hatchet chopping off one of her fingers.

Outside, the ECW Military have Cinder and her allies surrounded and Cinder tries to find a way for them to escape safely without anyone getting hurt.  Suddenly, the townspeople emerge from the shadows with a plan of their own and the Lunars take control of the ECW Military, forcing them to surrender.  Cinder and her allies must now leave Africa behind, and start planning their next move.

Cress is terrified of the handsome yet murderous man holding her hostage and starts to beg for her safety when she realizes he has an LSOP tattoo. Without explanation, Sybil's guard appears and Cress starts to fear the worst when Thorne's booming voice starts coming down the hallway.  Cinder then joins their little Rampion Crew Reunion.

We continue our journey with Cress in the van traveling to an unknown location with her captors.  Though she tries to put up a fight, she is forced to accept her circumstances but clings to the hope that Captain Thorne will rescue her. 

Meanwhile, in the New Beijing Palace Research Facility, Emperor Kai and advisor Torin visit the medical labs with questions of their own about the fugitive Lihn Cinder. Kai lets it slip to Fatine that Queen Levana will provide Earth with a Letumosis antidote after their marriage is finalized.

Torin takes a moment to comfort Kai regarding his questioning feelings for Lihn Cinder but is quick to remind him of the larger concerns facing the Eastern Common Wealth.  Kai is horrified to learn the origins of the cyborg draft and the Cyborg Protection Act and makes a controversial decision to end the cyborg draft, effective immediately.

Thorne is surprised to learn that their caravan rescuers might trade in goods unfamiliar to him and is taken aback when he realizes Cress is one of those goods and has already been taken away.  Thorne attacks the caravaner who tried to lure him away, vowing to go and find Cress himself.

Back in Kufra, Cress is settling into their hotel room when she finds out their crashed satellite has been discovered, and it's time to go before they are caught.  But when she goes to alert Thorne, he preoccupied with an exotic stranger.  As Cress is heartbroken and locked out of their hotel room, Jina approaches to comfort and offers her help.  Jina tells Cress she knows that Cress is ungifted, and a smug smile is her only warning before Cress is grabbed from behind, and taken against her will.

As Thorne tries to comfort her and promise they will survive, Cress wonders at the likelihood of his words. 

Back with Cinder, after he patches up Wolf, Dr. Erland demands answers from Cinder. She recaps where she has been and what she has been up to, and tells him of her plans to stop Kia and Levanas wedding. But, the Doctor is unimpressed with her plans, not to mention her choice in company. As she tries to discern her next move, Dr. Erland tells her about the people of the town and the promises he has made on her behalf.

And though Cress says Thorne would be just as brave and selfless if he had been in her position, Thorne is not convinced.

When all hope seems lost and Cress starts to admit defeat, Captain Carswell Thorne is there with a comforting shoulder and a promise of survival.

After passing out in the elevator, Kai escorts Cinder to Dr. Erland for diagnostics. Kai hands the antidote to Dr. Erland and regretfully leaves Cinder for a world meeting. Dr. Erland is horrified to see Cinder once again at the palace and to learn that Levana has already seen her. He learns that Cinder was not immune to Levana’s power, and reveals that her adoptive father gave her secret protection from Lunars, and from herself. We learn a secret about Dr. Erland before he gives the antidote to a shaken Cinder, desperate to save Peony.

Jacin is amused to learn Cinder’s true identity and Dr. Erland is delighted to learn of Sybil's demise.  Queen Levana’s fury is unmatched at the loss of Sybil, the reveal by Dr. Erland that Cinder is Selene, and Jacin’s claims of innocence and espionage. As Dr. Erland sings himself to sleep one last time, we say our final goodbyes to Cinder’s mentor and Cress’s long-lost father.
