Ep. 24 | A Year In Review With Mike Tran (2020)
35 perc 1. évad 24. rész Mike Tran

Yo what’s going on guys. Happy New Years Eve. We’re finally done with 2020 and I wanted to jump on here to record a quick year in review podcast episode with you guys as well as talk about what I have planned for 2021.

But before we do all that I just wanted to give a huge shoutout and thank you to everyone’s who’s been listening since the beginning! Yes I’m talking about you who’s currently listening at this very moment. Man out of all of the hundreds of thousands of podcasts available, you guys decided I’m gonna listen to this one. I’m extremely grateful for that and I’m not going to take that for granted. Thank you guys.

So quick 2020 podcast stats. we ended the year with a total of 24 episodes, had listeners from 35 different countries, over 850 minutes worth of content and almost 10,000 downloads! Not bad for not having any outside help or promotions.

Wow! It’s crazy when you get a chance to stop and really soak everything in. When I first started the podcast, I hated the idea of speaking in front of a mic. you can tell from my first couple of episodes that I wasn’t comfortable with it at all but I knew this would be something that would have a positive impact on people so I challenged myself to get out of my comfort zone for the greater good. I’m still not where I want to be but I’m committed to making sure I do my best to get better everyday.

I literally set a goal which I wrote out at the beginning of 2020 of doing only 10 episodes for the entire year because at the time, I felt like that was all I could literally do. That goal was HUGE, damn near impossible in my mind at the time but we ended up doing double the amount.

The first year of the podcast was definitely a year focused on learning, experimenting and making a lot of mistakes. For 2021, I’m ready to get the name out there and I’m thinking about doing a complete rebrand of the podcast from the name, to the design and there’s also a big possibility that I’’l bring on a permanent co-host to help with the show as well. Now that I’m much more comfortable i’m going to do a better job at bringing on more influential guests so that you guys get even more value. There’s A lot of things coming in 2021 with the podcast, Asianmenswear, and even a product line coming soon so stay tuned!

Before I end things off I want to give a shoutout to all of the guests from 2020, without your wisdom and stories, the podcast would be empty. Thank you for taking the time to have a conversation with me and sharing it with the world. I hope you guys kill it in 2021. Have a happy new years guys and that’s a wrap for 2020!

Ep. 23 I Mike Tran (Founder of AsianMenswear/This Is For Us Podcast) - The Backstory and Inspiration Behind AsianMenswear and the "This Is For Us: An Asian American Podcast"
35 perc 1. évad 23. rész Mike Tran / Chee

Welcome back to the “This Is For Us Podcast” guys. I got a special episode today that I wasn’t sure if I was going to release but since the podcast is coming up on a year and a lot of you guys have requested this I thought why not.

So a grad student reached out to me to learn more about why I started both the instagram account Asianmenswear and this podcast for a class assignment and we ended up having a great conversation. Luckily for me I was able to record the whole thing.

If you guys are unfamiliar, before I created this podcast I started an Instagram account called AsianMenswear. The page showcases and highlights positive representation for Asian men from fashion, to sports, to entertainment as well as highlighting their achievements and accolades.

We actually covered a lot of different things but this should give you guys an idea of how everything came about, where I’m hoping to take it and some things I have planned for the future. I hope you guys enjoy it.

Ep. 12 I Tu David Phu (Chef/Entrepreneur) - From Going Hungry As A Kid To Becoming A Contestant On 'Top Chef' Season 15
71 perc 1. évad 12. rész Mike Tran / Tu David Phu

Today’s episode features an individual with an inspirational story.

His name is Tu David Phu and he’s a Vietnamese-American Chef based out of Oakland CA. He’s worked at many Michelin Star rated restaurants all around the US and was a contestant on Season 15 of the highly popular cooking show called 'Top Chef'. In 2017, Tu was named 'Rising Star Chef' by the San Francisco Chronicle, and in 2019, he was named as a 'Smart Catch Leader' by the James Beard Foundation for his use of promoting sustainable seafood options.

During this conversation, Tu and I talked about his rough childhood experience living in Oakland, CA. Tu goes into detail on how some nights he would go hungry, how he did not have access to fresh food (which a lot of us take for granted), the rollercoaster of a journey he went through to learn about his identity, what community means to him, how food saved his life and gave him purpose, and getting the call to appear on Top Chef.

As a bonus, we even got the chance to talk about an incident that occurred during Top Chef, which involved a fellow contestant sabotaging Tu’s dish.

The story behind his love for food is one that is so raw and organic that it’s hard not to root for the guy. I’m extremely grateful I was able to connect and have this conversation with Tu and I look forward to working with him in the near future.

In today’s episode I got a chance to speak with an exceptional doctor who's also one of the many doctors dealing with an influx of confirmed Coronavirus cases at their hospitals. He’s a father of two, a physician, and he’s got a physique better than most 20 year olds, and the kicker –– he’s 42.

We talked about growing up Korean American in a predominantly white neighborhood, how to remain disciplined when you’re crazy busy, fitness as a vehicle for success, and how he decided to use social media to share his story in hopes of inspiring others.
