Welcome to your information source for all things relating to the physician assistant profession. While it's very desirable to become a PA, it's not easy to get there. From the extensive requirements of difficult prerequisites to having thousands of hours of experience, becoming a PA can be quite the challenge. Savanna Perry from The PA Platform Blog reveals all of her advice on how to reach your goals of becoming a PA. Savanna has been where you are and understands what it takes to look good on paper, and dazzle in an interview to land a spot in a PA program. While Savanna admits that she doesn’t know everything, she has successfully helped hundreds of Pre-PA hopefuls with personal statements and interviews to help them gain acceptance into PA school and start successful careers. Jessie (@jessiesanatomy on Instagram) is a mom of 3, respiratory therapist, and soon to be PA student! As a first generation student with no family in medicine, Jessie had doubts along the way about whether she would be able to achieve her goals, but she's proven that she can absolutely do it. Sophia is a native New Orlean, and graduated with her Bachelor's of Science (Cardiopulmonary Science major) in 2012 from LSU-Health Science Center, and then worked as a cardiac sonographer for 3 1/2 years. She found herself working in adult echocardiography, and obtained certification in pediatric and fetal echocardiography as well, making her only 1 out of 6 people in Louisiana with those skills. While working, Sophia decided to get more involved with patient care and pursue PA. After taking classes online and during weekends and night, Sophia was accepted on her second attempt to Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and just completed her first semester as a PA-S! Travis Laverne (@tjlaverne) is a second year PA student at Drexel University on clinical rotations. As a 35 years old husband with two young boys at home, he is busy! Prior to PA school, Travis served 13 years active duty with the United States Air Force. He serves as class President and Board member for the leadership committee with SAAPA. Prior to PA school, after separating from the Air Force, Travis was a clinical research coordinator for The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania focused in Cardiovascular surgery, specifically Aortic Valve replacement and Thoracic Aorta therapies. We discuss how Travis is using the GI Bill to pay for school, how he balances all of his commitments with family life, and how he’s doing in PA school!

Taylor is sharing her story as a non-traditional applicant who pivoted from a job as a publicist to becoming a PA. After reapplying, she ended up at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, and recently graduated. After experiencing test anxiety during her first semester of PA school, Taylor withdrew, did a lot of mental and academic work in her semester off and restarted with a new cohort the following year. Taylor ended up doing a complete turn and succeeding throughout PA school. She wants to let people know that having struggles is not uncommon and that you can overcome them! Jed Grant, PA-C began his medical career as a US Army medic and graduated from the Inter-service (US Military) PA Program in 1999. He has Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the University of Nebraska, and is a doctoral candidate at the University of Lynchburg. He has practiced in primary care, general surgery, military, occupational, and emergency medicine. He has served in several leadership roles in emergency medicine including responsibility for PA operations at the local, state, and regional level. Mr. Grant has served in several educational roles since 2003 including clinical and didactic faculty, PA Program Director, and academic director of a post graduate fellowship in emergency medicine. He is currently principle faculty and admissions director at the University of the Pacific PA program, works clinically in emergency medicine and urgent care, and serves in the California Army National Guard as an Aeromedical PA. Gov. Brown appointed Mr. Grant to the Physician Assistant Board in 2013, and Gov. Newsom recently reappointed him for an additional four-year term. Mr. Grant served as the Vice -President of the Board from 2014-2018, and has been the President of the Board since 2018.

Everyone has questions about how to pay for PA school, and then how to deal with the loans that are typically necessary. Travis Hornsby from Student Loan Planner is sharing his tips and advice for making the best financial choices when it comes to paying for your schooling.
Getting private loans for PA school is only a good idea if you're replacing Grad PLUS loans with lower cost private loans. You also want to make sure you're not going to work for a non profit employer.
If you're already out of school, refinancing PA school loans to a lower interest rate is a good idea if you don't benefit from forgiveness programs.
And if you're really confused you can get help to figure it out both before and after borrowing.

How important is PA school accreditation? What does provisional status mean? What about probation? How does that affect your ability to take boards or get a job? Should you apply to these programs? CASPA only calculates your GPA once with the information that is entered at the time of submission. That means courses in progress won’t be included even if you update later with new grades. What is my CASPA GPA? - https://www.thepaplatform.com/blog-2/csk9jra4zhektfyerfzehth9d2ejzb
Everything hypothetically should carry over between cycles except for letters of recommendation and the personal statement. Don’t rely solely on CASPA to save all of your information. You can use the HCE/PCE Excel sheets from www.thepaplatform.com/downloads to organize your experiences.
You cannot edit experiences that are already entered in CASPA, but you can add new ones. The schools will get updates, but they may not look at them. It’s interview season ya’ll! There’s no doubt about it, and even though it’s still early, I’m hearing about interview invites going out every single day. A question I’m frequently asked is when should you start preparing for your PA school interview? And my answer is as soon as you submit your application. You never know when the invite will come. I’ve heard of people being called 24 hours before (if they were local) or having up to 6 months to prepare. This is not a situation you want to be caught unprepared in though. In today’s podcast episode, I’m showing you just a small portion of a mock interview I did with Sam from @my.path.to.pa and she graciously let me share her answers from our session. Hopefully, this gives you a little bit of an idea of what happens during a mock interview, and helps you feel like it might not be as weird as you’re expecting.
