RX'D RADIO
RX'D Radio is a unique blend of science, strength and clinical experience. Hosts Dr Jordan Shallow DC and Dr Jordan Jiunta DC offer up an insightful and sometimes irreverent perspective on all things health and fitness. Both competitive athletes in Powerlifting and CrossFit respectively, these two leave no stone unturned with their hilarious, insightful dissection of the most common misconceptions, gimmicks and accepted practices in the fields of training, nutrition, injury rehabilitation and much more! Be sure to follow the show on Instagram @rxdradio , Host Shallow @the_muscle_doc, Jiunta @thefunctionalchiro and check out www.pre-script.com! Show produced by LunderJack Productions
We're back with the RX'D Radio Docs this week as we dive into the topic of professional athletes. Specifically, Shallow expresses his rather strong opinions on the athletic career of veteran QB, Tom Brady. Shallow shares with us his theory of "Tom Brady as America’s Smoke Bomb," that is, Brady's mistakes have only to be deployed when the USA needs a distraction. Shallow and Jiunta compare and contrast Brady with Michael Jordan and even bring the controversy of Jeffrey Epstein into the mix. The boys share frustration over “certified body coaches” and what that credential - or lack thereof - really means in the fitness industry. Join in for a wild ride through conspiracy theories and good stories!

For the first time in over one year, Dr. Jordan Shallow and Dr. Jordan Jiunta are reunited in person today to bring back the rants that started RX’D Radio. After reminiscing on the past decade of their friendship, the conversation turns to discuss opinions - examining the “whys'' and “hows'' of the people who feel the need to share them. The boys discuss when opinions actually matter and differentiate between using those opinions to have influence versus have impact on the world around you. Shallow discusses the age gap that falls into the blurred line between “old” and “new-school,” and how technology has impacted the development of younger generations. Jiunta and Shallow highlight the growing gap between power and competency in society, discuss understanding the consequences of one’s actions and provide us with some entertaining stories of discipline and consequence from their childhood.

Today Dr. Jordan Shallow welcomes Matt Vincent to RX’D Radio. Matt Vincent is a 2X Highland Games World Champion, the CEO of HViii Brand Goods, UMSO Podcast host, CEO of Habit Coffee Co, and a full time adventurer.
Shallow and Matt start the discussion off about the value of experience versus education, as well as their personal beliefs on religion and the afterlife. Matt retells of his time competing in Iceland, and the pair pontificate on how 100 million dollars may (or may not) change their lives.
Matt provides us with perspective on the importance of fostering more intimate relationships, and the two challenge each other’s viewpoints on the moral obligations of social media platforms such as Instagram. We finish with some advice on what it really takes to branch out and create your own livelihood, and we're reminded that taking a risk and learning from failure is better than taking no risk at all.

Today Dr. Jordan Shallow welcomes Dr. Ian Kaplan to RX’D Radio. As a coach and COO of Hybrid Performance Method, Ian is a former chiropractor who transitioned into software design and is now “the engine” and the mastermind behind the consumer interface of Hybrid Performance.
Today we get deep into the weeds of how Ian transitioned from the role of chiropractor into software design, and then we go on to explore the “behind the scenes” of social media and internet privacy. Ian gives us insight into how targeted ads are generated, and he explains a few details about some of the biggest deals made between some of the largest companies in the Silicon Valley. We talk machine learning, software hackers, and Ian shares some of his personal opinions on information sharing and the ethics of the internet.

Join us for this week's episode of RX’D Radio where Dr. Jordan Shallow is joined by Marcus Leoni for a rather deep and introspective chat about drugs, politics, morality and the meaning of life. Marcus is a Powerlifter and member of the Hybrid Performance team down in Miami, Florida.
The duo discusses everything from Tren to “the weeds”, and the differing moral considerations behind recreational and performance-enhancing drug use. Outlining some of their experience within the strength and coaching industries, we are given insight into the often poor choices that are made surrounding the use of PEDs, and some considerations to make prior to partaking. Touching on political and religious views, the conversation takes a deeper turn towards the meaning of human existence. Shallow and Marcus discuss Nihilism, the caveats to this belief and what this means for the greater purpose of human existence. At the end of the day the boys bring it back to the choices you can make to forge better human connection, create greater impact in the world around you and leave a mark on human history.

This week we return for another BIG BIDNESS discussion with your hosts Dr. Jordan Shallow and Killian Hamilton. The discussion this week focuses on the struggles associated with getting your business going out of the gate. The boys take an unexpected approach focusing on moral values, self integrity, and how guiding your choices “from the heart” will further your success in the long run. Shallow and Killian recount some of their lowest points financially, recounting how experiences such as these help to calibrate the perception of your “problems” and help to develop character. Killian and Shallow review some of the best habits of successful people, self sabotaging habits and how this relates back to human nature. The overwhelming theme this week revolves around development of self, sticking to your own moral compass, and focusing on what you can give to the world around you to naturally create leverage for yourself and your business.

Today, Jordan Shallow welcomes Matt Seaman to the podcast for an old school riff on human anatomy, structure versus function, and the application of these concepts as a coach. Matt Seaman is an exercise specialist, performance coach and nutritionist with experience and certifications behind his name. Based out of the UK, Matt also provides online education on exercise, movement and nutrition through his company, My Fitness Platform, and hosts the Teaching the What, the Why & the How Podcast.
The conversation opens with a brief introduction of Matt: his systems for vetting information and synthesizing information, and how he applies his knowledge to his clientele’s needs. As the conversation moves into human anatomy, the two focus on the structural and functional aspects of the ribcage and pelvis. Matt and Jordan discuss in detail the mechanics of breathing and how certain training modalities can lead to physical alterations in the shape and function of the rib cage. We receive clarification around the “pump and bucket handle” movements associated with the rib cage during breathing cycles, and the common dysfunctions associated with the pelvic floor. The two also cover proper function of the shoulder and hip throughout gait cycle, highlighting how muscle actions change depending on the anatomical position or the movement being executed. Blowing up the “single solutions” approach, the team highlights the importance of context and applying the right tools to the right situation.

This week, Dr. Jordan Shallow welcomes Kyle Dobbs to RX’D Radio. Kyle is the founder of Compound Performance, out of NYC. A family man first, Kyle is also a leading strength coach and educator in the industry. He works with clients at all levels of training, and with coaches from all over the world.
The men discuss Kyle’s business and online services -- primarily the limitations of and appropriate applications for online training. Kyle is currently the rehabilitation coach for the infamous (and RX’D Radio-famous guest), Phil Daru, and he discusses his work with Phil and provides some tidbits from their work that may be appropriate for general training. The conversation turns to technical evaluations of the ribcage and pelvis in both static and dynamic positions, and Kyle and Shallow discuss how training strategies should differ between clientele based on training age and sporting requirements. The two highlight the dangers of mobility without stability, and how the neurological and biomechanical systems function in stretching and stability exercises. You won't want to miss the brain gains in this episode, but you will likely want $1 for every time Shallow says, “squatty squats.”

Holy Shit, Episode 200! Jordan Shallow here, and I just wanted to personally thank each and every one of you for listening to RX'D RADIO over the years. Jiunta and I really never thought we'd live this long, let alone still be running a podcast with such a kick-ass audience.
In this episode, I sit down with my dear friend, Killian Hamilton and we go over the initial steps in making something like this possible.
FItness and Business are weird things, even weirder when you try to blend them together. Trust me, I know. It's been my life for the better part of 5 years.
Today, we go through the fundamental first steps in getting your fitness business going. A ton of fun to ring in Episode 200!

Today the head honchos of Pre-Script start the New Year off in OG RX'D Radio style. Dr. Jordan Shallow and Dr. Jordan Jiunta unite in frustration over social media, and discuss how online platforms have capitalized on COVID in such a way that has resulted in users further detaching from real, personal interactions.
The Jordans review how the compulsive use of platforms such as Instagram may disorder our mental health, as how online personas do not reflect the real life individual, we project our ideals onto these personas and we reify the false online identities that they have created. The boys walk us through how they rank order lines of communication to most effectively interact with those closest to them, how they schedule their days and the tools they use to keep them productive and away from online distractions. Shallow highlights how social media has created a world of “unearned wisdom” when people confuse online “experience” with real life hardships. We are reminded that in the bigger picture it’s the little things that matter, and the small steps that we take to connect and provide service to those around us that make the greatest impact: making conversation with your local butcher may pay off in a free cut of steak. Today’s takeaways: schedule your time, take action, and be of service to others.

RX’D Radio welcomes Muscle Coach Mike Barnes to the stand! Mike is a national-level bodybuilder and strength coach based out of the Toronto area, and he hosts the podcast, Buried Under the Bar. Today we take a deep dive into what it really takes to be a competitive bodybuilder.
Shallow and Mike begin the discussion reflecting on the bodybuilding industry today and the perception of being a bodybuilder versus the action required to become one. They discuss the “smarts” of bodybuilding training techniques and the willpower required for a competitor to make center stage. The team analyzes hypertrophy training and the gray area that still surrounds the methodology. They address “grip and rip,” versus “smart” techniques, how each may produce different results on stage, and how to unite these concepts. Mike spills the tea on the most intense weeks of his competition prep and talks about the serious mental fortitude necessary to push past the psychological limits predetermined by millions of years of human evolution. The conversation travels through the history of bodybuilding and the best names to grace the stage, and addresses how “success” in the bodybuilding world has been redefined by the emergence of social media. Shallow and Mike present bodybuilding as a process rather than an outcome, and Mike tells us his secret motivations that help him to keep pushing.

This week on RX’D Radio, Dr. Shallow and our guest host, Pre-Script™ Head Coach in Canada, Killian Hamilton welcomes Coach James Thayer to the podcast. James is an experienced Ace Fitness and Pre-Script™ L1 Coach. He owns Byproduct Performance and currently runs Campus Recreation at Washburn University.
Killian and James talk about all things strength training as related to sport. On the table for discussion is a feast of coaching and programming concepts: emphasizing the importance of proper exercise selection to bridge the gap between strength and stability in an athlete’s training; what it means to train skill versus adaptation; breadth of knowledge and skilled application of exercise; the importance of having an open mind accompanied by the ability to be critical when analyzing exercise methodology. Shallow makes a highlight of the concept of inoculation - often overlooked as an important concept to help break athletes out of their own mental limitations. The importance of breadth of perspective, critical thinking, and gathering experience before approaching a goal is highlighted throughout the episode -- in Killian’s terms, “start with a full page and erase down from there”. We finish off with a surprise turn to The 5 Love Languages, touching on the importance of communication and understanding of one’s self in order to better understand those around you.

Killian Hamilton joins Dr. Jordan Shallow on RX’D Radio this week, to provide more context around the fast-approaching release of the Pre-Script ™ Skill Acquisition Course. The duo gives us the18 month, behind-the-scenes conversation that led to the creation of this course. As Killian describes it, “the death and birth of 10,000 hours of thought,” culminated in the course design that is intended to foster confidence and conviction in the coaches who take it. This course is fundamental to the concept of training.
The boys analyze in detail the parameters they use to classify movement, asking the necessary, preliminary questions, “How complex is too complex? How simple is too simple?” Killian and Shallow return repeatedly to the Turkish Getup to exemplify why it is not the most relevant exercise to select for most athletes. They discuss critical thinking skills, and address the lack of those skills in today’s world owing to the ease with which thought can be outsourced to The Internet. Both educators walk us through some specific examples of how they may progress or regress principles of stability through the shoulder, hip and core, as well as evaluate the benefits and differences between bilateral and unilateral exercises. Expect as always the usual, ranting banter between our two Canadian meatheads, and be sure to get on the list for the upcoming Pre-Script ™ Skill Acquisition Course with Killian!

This week Dr. Jordan Shallow and Killian Hamilton welcome back Tony Montgomery Jr to the RX’D Radio podcast. One of the most impressive individuals you may ever meet, Tony is a US veteran and is a member of the Elite FTS crew. Tony has expertise in competitive strength sports as well as nutrition coaching, and he owns multiple businesses including Team Phoenix Performance Coaching, Strength Union Gym, and Subject Zero Supplements.
This week Tony, Shallow and Killian dive into nutrition as the main topic, exploring the science behind fat breakdown and the reality behind what it really takes to achieve your body composition goals. Tony gives us a seminar on insulin sensitivity - what it is, what may cause it and the effects that it has on the body. The crew also touches on how this may be different between genders, and the overwhelming effect that stress management has on fat loss. Tony iterates that better education is the real answer to adherence to a plan and the success of that plan, and reflects on the restrictive mentalities that fad diet crazes create. On this topic, Shallow and Killian recap their experience with intense weight cuts and how having more dietary freedom can create a better environment for compliance. Today we receive a very holistic approach to nutrition based on education, one that includes meeting clients where they are at to ensure their highest level of success.

This week we welcome Canadian Bodybuilding guru Ben Pakulski back to Rx’D Radio to sit down with his fellow Canadians, Dr. Jordan Shallow and Killian Hamilton. Unquestionably one of the greatest minds in bodybuilding training, Ben is an IFBB Pro with a long list of accomplishments, including appearances at The Olympia and multiple national titles. Ben is the CEO of Muscle Intelligence and owns Mi40, a gym in Tampa, Florida. He is an accomplished businessman, coach, speaker and lives his life with awareness and virtue, like few others are able.
Today Team Canada gets into the weeds about the origins of Ben Pakulski, and what built him into the cognizant athlete he is today. We discuss his highest values and explore the personal growth he experienced during his time in the bodybuilding world. Ben tells us how his mentality behind training evolved to serve him better and ultimately lead to his successes in the sport, with his family and with his business. The boys discuss the importance of awareness, as well as the necessity of facing obstacles to uncover personal strengths and develop a better sense of virtue. Killian and Ben discuss their personal practices to calibrate themselves on a daily basis, and the trio discuss training as a form of meditation and a tool to instill discipline and “peace from mind”. Killian recounts living in the airport, Ben discusses calibrating perspective in himself and in his children, and the team discusses how bliss can only truly be experienced by also having a deep experience of pain -- this is a conversation you will not want to miss!

Pre-Script team Canada coaches reunite this week as Dr. Jordan Shallow is accompanied by Killian Hamilton. Today’s conversation is inspired by clients and colleagues sharing Instagram videos in the DM’s with no other context but - “Thoughts?”. Killian and Shallow unite in frustration over these engagements laying the groundwork for this discussion on the relevancy, value and efficiency of one’s time.
The duo reflect on how much time is wasted surfing social media, where most will absorb the irrelevant information provided by others instead of forming unique opinions of their own. Killian and Shallow walk us through some of their structured, goal-oriented approaches to making money and discuss the vital roles of calibration and aim in successful business practice. Contrasting the lifestyles of the solo flying coach to the 9-5 puncher, Killian and Shallow highlight how following on the heels of others is a limiter and good scapegoat from taking responsibility for your own success. We touch on the risks associated (or not) with trying something new, the indifference of time, and the two motivators for everything we do in life -- wealth and status. Pre-Script Captains Shallow & Jiunta return today to talk coaching fundamentals, and provide their best advice for those interested in strength coaching.
We begin with a very personal journey from Dr. Jiunta, describing how wrestling and bodybuilding led to his current and forever passion: olympic weightlifting. We are reminded that the first step doesn't have to be the right one, but it is always the necessary one to get started -- chasing your passion is not an easy task! Shallow discusses the biggest growth he sees in the Pre-Script Level 1 coaches, throughout the program, and describes how the course came into development. The Docs unravel how the PSL1 course drives home some of the most valuable skills they have found to build successful coaches, touching on topics such as in-person and online communication, confidence, critical thinking and the application of biomechanical concepts.
Join in for a sneak peak at a new Pre-Script course to be released by our very own Dr. Jordan Jiunta, designed to bring high quality coaching principles in olympic weightlifting to the masses!

We return this week with the Canadian portion of the Pre-Script family, Killian Hamilton and Dr. Jordan Shallow, to discuss Killian’s realm of expertise in athlete skill acquisition and Strength & Conditioning coaching.
Killian and Shallow unite in frustration about S&C coaches who attempt to match shapes in the weight room to those seen on the field of play, as well as why this method born of a lack of knowledge and understanding of how to properly apply this training to sport. Killian discusses his training methods as well as his upcoming Skill Acquisition course. We dive deep into why the applications of training strength for sport versus training strength for strength are so very different. Killian does a great job walking us through the “whys and hows” of using the weight room to increase the physiological and neurological “bank accounts” of his athletes to afford them more runway for better performance on game day.

Shallow and Phil take a deep dive today into the biggest questions surrounding training and performance nutrition. Phil answers questions on some of the most controversial topics such as supplementation, protein intake and timing, the keto diet, hydration and much more. He talks us through some of his tactics for meal timing, fueling and recovery for high-level athletes and how these protocols may be unique for each sport application. They talk about carbohydrate sources, like Phil’s go-tos: sushi rice and bagels; they discuss both the methodology behind intense weight cuts made by fighters and strength athletes as well as rehydration and refeed protocols both before and during competition. In conclusion, nutritional coaching protocols play a vital role to ensure that athletes show up on game day with the ability to express their full potential. As the first person on RX’D Radio to have ever been shot, James humbly describes to us of the roller coaster of events that has been his life, and shows us what it means to literally run into the face of danger.
James is a strength coach, powerlifting athlete, and former paramedic and firearms trafficker, from South Africa. James discusses what drove his career choice as a medical professional, and recounts a heart-wrenching, life-altering tale from his first 2 weeks on the job as a paramedic. We get a riveting account of his very young life as an armed paramedic tracking down rhino poachers in South Africa where he was shot point blank in the chest. After a labral tear injury, James decided to shift careers and became involved in the import and exportation of firearms, though this position and its lack of positive impact on society left him unfulfilled and conflicted. After a second surgical procedure on his labrum, James redirected his focus back to the realm of strength coaching to create positive change in the lives of his clients. TUNE IN FOR A RIDE as the guys discuss the true value of shared experience and community, explore the wild experiences of James’s young life, and reaffirm the perspective that “it can always be worse.”

The docs return this week to attack the topic of adaptation versus optimization, how these concepts vary with training age as well as the very critical role a coach plays in the success of an athlete. But first, the boys reminisce over some of their favorite past RX’D Radio episodes, and reflect on how the podcast has grown and evolved.
As we stroll into the current episode, Jiunta discusses his considerations when writing a program for a new client. He emphasizes the importance of the first step -- determining the level and needs of that individual. The Jordans breakdown adaptation versus optimization, and when each is appropriate to program. The “systems” way of thinking about programming is criticized in favor of what Shallow identifies as an “indexing” method to identify the athlete’s needs and address them, efficiently. The boys connect over their frustrations towards coaches taking too much credit for their athlete’s success, as some coaches seem to forget that they are nothing without their client’s work and dedication. It is a coach’s job to understand the client and provide guidance by driving sufficient challenges that can produce the desired adaptations. At the end of the day, a coach’s career is made by the hard work of the athlete - so, know your role and play it, well.

The RX’D Radio Docs are in the office! Jiunta and Shallow return for some trademark banter on the current state of affairs in North America. From COVID haircuts to politics and conspiracy theories, buckle in for some unfiltered and entertaining reflection on the wild and crazy year that is 2020.
After warming us up with a very uncomfortable trip to the barbershop, Shallow meanders into his recent interest in modern conspiracy theories. Including references to Jeffrey Epstein, Donald Sterling and systemic racism, outlandish theories behind the lineage of the Canadian Prime Minister and Trump as a secret super hero -- this episode goes everywhere you might not expect! Jiunta shares his personal experience living in California during this challenging time for the state, and the duo dive into the impact of COVID 19 on California in particular as well as how the upcoming election may impact the state of the virus in the broader United States. Shallow and Jiunta reflect on conspiracy theories as the “opiate of the masses,” a kind of modern-day religion that fulfills the human need to believe in something greater. The boys also observe politics as “America’s favourite sport,” eloquently describing it using the Who’s Line Is It Anyway tagline - “Where the rules are made up and the points don’t matter.” Join in for the ride!

Jiunta and Shallow return this week to tackle the topic of goal setting as well as bring a uniquely interactive request to the audience. Starting off with a few thoughts on the strange times of COVID19, the boys jump into some podcast ranking experimentation with the listeners! Shallow requests your participation as he attempts to better understand how to hack the Itunes podcast rankings, comically auditing RX’D Radio reviews along the way. The duo then venture deep into what it really means to set and achieve a goal.
From the unwillingness to do the front-end work or reflect on failures, the question is posed as to whether or not the “goals” that an individual sets out to achieve are really his or her own. The Jordans walk us through barriers that they have faced in their own lives, daily habits they have changed to build a lifestyle for success, as well as some of Jiunta’s personal habits that keep his tunnel vision sharpened towards his goals today. We are reminded that working hard does not guarantee success, but that working with a plan is of the utmost importance. In a society so engulfed in social pressures, Jiunta highlights that your reactions to failure will always reveal your true intentions. Most importantly, Shallow reminds us that when it comes to failure - YOU are the only one standing between yourself and the success of the goals that you set out to achieve.

This week, we welcome Coach Michael Tucker to the podcast to dive deep into functional performance. Michael has 7 years of experience working with collegiate athletes at schools across the USA, and he is currently the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the football team at Villanova University. Mike’s experience has built him to be one of the top strength and conditioning coaches in sports applications.
Today, Dr. Shallow and Coach Tucker travel in and out of the weeds to discuss sprint training and periodization, and how the latter is used to enhance an athlete’s performance on the field. After a brief introduction of Mike’s history, the conversation explores the entry-level sprinter and the common problems among athletes fresh on the collegiate turf. Mike walks us through some of his favourite drills to develop the technique of sprinting and how he thinks critically about developing programming for each athlete’s individual position on the field. From his “High to Low CNS” model and other methods to manipulate athlete constraints and periodization, Mike shows us just how deep the science rabbit hole can go. Not to fear, he does a fantastic job of relating concepts back to sports applications. Focused on building athletes to both perform and feel their best, Mike uses sprint training as a tool to accelerate his athletes’ performance. At the end of the day, we are reminded that context is key for any application and that for any athlete to be successful, it comes down to one main concept - run fast and rest.
Check out Mike’s SPRINTember program at just-sprint.com to learn and develop the fundamentals of your sprint technique!

Today on RX’D Radio, Jordan Shallow and Killian Hamilton welcome Blaine McConnell to talk about the Olympic sport of Bobsledding. Blaine is a member of the USA National Bobsled team, a former Crossfit games athlete, and a family man currently residing in Iceland. He became a highly competitive athlete in an astoundingly short period of time, and is nothing less than the world’s strongest bobsledder!
Starting his career in football, Blaine picked up Crossfit to learn Olympic weightlifting and made his way to the Crossfit games with just 2 years of training. Blaine walks us through this journey in today’s conversation. After encouragement from friends to try out for the combine, Blaine’s impressive work ethic and freakish genetics landed him on the USA National Bobsled team in 2019, in his first year of training. Killian shares his own tale of the sled, and the two compare stories of their entries into the sport, the dangers of the sport, and the fears associated with those dangers. We get insight into what Blaine’s training regiment looks like, how strength training has contributed to his bobsled career, as well as his recovery protocols after a day of getting bashed around on the track. Tune in for riveting recounts of bobsled crashes, Killian’s unprepared first run, and Blaine’s Olympic goals and reality for the near future.

The boys are back! Our regularly scheduled hosts are reunited this week to talk about awareness, and moreover the utter lack of it within today’s society. Shallow recounts multiple stories of his upbringing through rough neighbourhoods in Windsor, ON, and how those experiences helped to shape and elevate his awareness in everyday life. The Jordans discuss the role that evolution has played in today’s world -- particularly in places like the California Bay Area -- where life is safe, easy, and where The Top-of-the-Food-Chain is awarded by the merits of one’s bank account as opposed to one’s physical aptitude. Jiunta shares his opinions on the role that technology has played in our modern-day state of complacency, as well as how growing up in cold climates fosters necessary mental fortitude. The boys break down the concept of pain as an emotion, a drive state and perception, and chat about how the ability to “embrace the suck” has been lost on a softened society that collectively runs from life’s challenges.
Tune in for a dose of perspective, a reminder that character is best developed in the face of adversity, and as always, blunt and amusing analyses of the world as we know it.

This week we welcome back Kyle Traynor to the podcast to discuss his passion for business development and education. Kyle is the founder of Elite Vitality Mastery, an educational organization for business owners in the fitness industry that provides the knowledge required to attain personal potential and create financial freedom. He also hosts the podcast Pivotal Conversations where he provides free content around successful business development.
Kyle provides insight into the approach for Elite Vitality Mastery with a brief discussion of the 3 pillars of a successful business model: Cash Flow, Intelligence and Branding. Kyle relays the importance of learning how to keep money, not just making more of it, as most other “business coaches” in the industry tend to advise. The duo discuss the place of social media in business and how a large following does not necessarily equate to a large income. Jordan revisits his metaphor of the three-legged stool, in which a strong foundation for any business or personal plan involves standing on multiple, well developed principles. Kyle and Jordan chew on: the notion of developing a brand and its role in entrepreneurial success, how much “hard work” is really involved in building your business, and the personal attributes of adaptability, self-awareness and self criticism. Make sure to check out Kyle’s soon-to-be released Steel in the Walls Program to learn more!

This week, Jordan Shallow has the pleasure to sit down with Dr. Adeel Khan, an expert in regenerative medicine who specializes in interventional orthopedics. Dr. Khan has office locations in southern Ontario, Canada, and has treated a wide range of clientele, particularly professional athletes from the NBA, NFL, NHL and The Crossfit Games. He is the Research Director for HD Muscle, and as far as we’re concerned, the best regenerative medicine practitioner in Canada.
In this episode, Dr.Khan does a fantastic job to break down the history of regenerative medicine as well as some of the misconceptions and misunderstandings about the field. He explains several topics, including the misnomer behind the term “stem cells,” the spectrum of treatments within the field of regenerative medicine, and how it all actually works. He talks about the injuries and conditions that PRP injections are used to treat, and walks us through a brief discussion on the pain and risks associated with bone injections. The duo discuss “a day in the life” of patient treatments as well as the legal restrictions on the field, and the epidemic of poor quality treatment that leads Dr. Khan to trust very few in the industry. Tune in for a mind-blowing episode this week as we dive deep into the medical field to discuss where regenerative treatments have been, where they are now, and where they may be going in the future! Today, RX’D Radio is honored to welcome Mark Coles to the podcast to discuss his career in business coaching for fitness professionals. Mark is an impressively qualified business coach, personal trainer, body builder and owner of M10 Gym in Nottingham, UK. Mark coaches budding fitness professionals with the intention of spreading passion across and creating impact within the industry.
The conversation begins with the problem that Mark sees as the most common amongst his clients: new trainers tend to over-exaggerate both the successes of those around them as well as those of the mentors to whom they compare themselves. The effect of social media on the growth of the industry is highlighted and leads Mark to discuss the importance of defining an individual’s personal identity, passions, and goals for business and life in order to drive his or her success. Mark walks us through the “aha” moment in his career that changed his perspective to focus on creating impact within the industry, and he tells us the steps he took to get there. The duo discusses the critical importance of sticking to your passions, putting in the work, and surmounting the inevitable self doubt one will face in order to build a business that will never leave you worried about money in the morning. This week, Jordan Shallow welcomes his partner in crime to RX’D Radio! Kayla Lee is a Physiotherapist, Exercise and Sport Scientist, and a coach. She uses her breadth of experience to provide an evidence-based approach to training and education for fitness, nutrition and rehabilitation.
Today the team discusses the topic of coaching and training female clientele. Kayla takes the floor to discuss the various physiological stages that the female body progresses through over time, the astounding lack of education and awareness around those processes, and how it all applies to training. She touches on the female menstrual cycle and how it can be used as an asset rather than a frustrating barrier to success in training. They take on the subject of male coaches and educators in the industry who blatantly lack understanding of female physiology but who choose to express their opinions about it anyway. Kayla reviews the development of her latest 8 week online course that unites her breadth of research and personal experience to provide an applied education on women’s physiology and training. As a highlight, we receive insight into what Kayla identifies as the most important tool in any coach’s toolbox when working with female clientele - empathy - and the power it can have to foster the trainer-client relationship.

This week on RX’D Radio, Jordan Shallow sits down with Lachy Rowston and Raph Freedman of The Mind Muscle Project. Started in October 2014, their podcast platform is focused on education, quality conversation and sharing truth within the fitness and nutrition industry. Lachy and Raph are also co-owners of Creature Fitness Gyms in the Bondi and Edgecliff areas of Australia.
Today’s discussion centers about the importance of interpersonal relationships within business. Choosing to open their first gym location during a time when the crossfit industry was dying, Raph and Lachy walk us through the challenges they faced and the principles that they have turned to in order to make their business a success. They emphasize the importance of choosing partners wisely, how to navigate their own business relationship with honesty, and they discuss a healthy approach to resolve conflict. The group talks ethics and long-game decisions versus short-term gains, and how Raph and Lachy have strategically used the leverage they have gained to grow their business for the long haul. Listen in for a tale of confrontation from the early days of Jordan and Jordan, as well as a very clear outline of three core principles to build a successful business with longevity.

This week Jordan Jiunta is joined by Kevin Doherty for a brief but insightful look into Kevin’s development as an exceptional weightlifting coach for youth athletes. Kevin is the owner of Hassle Free Barbell Club in San Francisco California and works as the Head Weightlifting Coach at Lincoln High School.
Kevin walks us through his life as an athlete and the development of his career as a teacher and coach to youth weightlifters. As a 21 year old geometry teacher, Kevin discovered weightlifting for his own athletic interest through his colleagues in the teaching community. After years of training and competing as an athlete himself, he began coaching youth football athletes at Lincoln High School. This launched an array of opportunities as he went on to produce multiple world-level youth weightlifting competitors and highly successful football and track and field athletes. Kevin continues to enjoy coaching weightlifting as both a main sport and addition to strength training programs for high school athletes, he also briefly discusses how he has had to adapt his processes in order to continue to provide quality coaching during Covid-19.

John Sheridan joins Jordan Shallow this week on RX’D Radio to discuss his experience in powerlifting and the development of his career as a strength coach and small business owner. John is the owner, head coach and “Bearded Overlord” of Burley Strength gym in Canberra, Australia, and the creator of Peak Speak Podcast.
The conversation begins with a recalling of catastrophic injuries witnessed at high-level powerlifting meets, a discussion about John’s extensive coffee knowledge, and his appreciation of quality products from small purveyors. John walks us through the moment that diverted his path from athlete to strength coach and explains the “No Dickheads” policy that is the foundation of the community at Burley Strength gym. Jordan and John align in their fundamental belief that fear is a precursor to growth -- that it is necessary to challenge both mind and body to live life to the fullest. John reflects on how Covid-19 has affected Burley Strength, Jordan recalls his 1 am encounter with a cockroach, and both discuss how they themselves are “flying by the seat of their pants,” perhaps much like the rest of us living on this planet right now. This week Jordan Shallow welcomes fellow Canadian meathead Stu Locke to RX’D Radio. Stu has been a personal trainer at GoodLife Fitness for many years, and utilizes a highly effective but simple approach to training. Stu has been an advisor to Shallow, and his perspective to training and coaching is one that Shallow trusts and frequently calls upon. Stu owns Kodiak Barbell in Ottawa.
Stu and Shallow discuss the major training strategies, cues and corrective work that Stu uses to address form breakdown in the squat. The conversation then takes a turn towards the subjects of the business of coaching, and life outside of the gym. They discuss the value of education versus experience, and evaluate the differences between the methods of training for conventional sports and competitive powerlifting. Stu believes in being in the business of people; he understands the devotion that it requires to reach the podium, and he promotes living a life that encompasses more than just the barbell.

This week, RX’D Radio brings you a particularly compelling episode, with Dr. Jordan Shallow and guest, Derek Woodske. A top-ranking Canadian Track & Field athlete, Derek is a seasoned strength coach and educator who has trained athletes in the NCAA, NFL, and on multiple University Track and Field teams. Originally from a nowhere town in British Columbia, Canada, Derek has lived and worked internationally, and he now runs his own consulting business out of Mammoth Lakes, California.
Shallow and Woodske discuss their experiences growing up in small Canadian towns and contrast social systems and governance between Canada and the US. Derek leads an adventurous life, and these adventures have provided him an interesting and expansive perspective on the state of the world. He recounts travelling to Saudi Arabia to be a coach and trainer to Princess Sara, and working in Riyadh through ISIS. He subsequently suffered PTSD from those experiences, and he talks about the myriad, complex ramifications and manifestations of trauma. In this episode, the two dig into: the concept of social media as a differentiating factor in understanding current versus historical events, the higher value of spreading good to those you encounter in your day-to-day life, and... Zac Brown. Derek is a force of positive energy in the world, and his appreciation of life’s nuanced details make this episode one you do not want to miss!

This week on RX’D Radio, Jordan Shallow is joined by the unconventional and impressive Nick Gloff. Nick is only 22, but his short trajectory through life has been anything but uneventful.
In this episode, we get to know Nick: through a pivotal moment at age 12; through his journey out of obesity and into football; as a really strong bodybuilder. Each of these events has provided him a source of motivation, and training has been the greatest vehicle to teach him how to strive for excellence. The duo dive into their approach to programming and the importance of always challenging your own knowledge. Strong topics covered in this episode include comprehension of “first principles intent-based programming”, proving concepts from experience rather than preaching general knowledge, and the great frustration behind the all-encompassing smoke-bomb platitude, “it depends”. Originally from north of Calgary, Canada, Seth is currently studying in a chiropractic college in Florida and lifting out of Perfect Storm Hardcore Training Gym. Seth is a highly competitive Multi-Ply Powerlifter with a long list of incredible achievements behind his name.
Seth and Shallow talk about Seth’s transition into powerlifting while recovering from a shoulder injury, his journey from Raw to Single to Multi-Ply lifting, and his impressive feats of strength including a 700 lb squat he performed at the age of nineteen. The two discuss how their clinical knowledge impacts their approach to both lifting and training, the differences between classroom theory and practical application of those theories, and the hurdles of transitioning from in-person to on-line coaching. Seth highlights the steep learning curve he experienced in creating valuable and high quality online content. The boss men, Jordan Shallow and Jordan Jiunta are reunited to discuss the release of RX’D Programming. This episode gets into the heart and soul of Pre-Script.
RX’D Programming is the reason that The Jordans started this business in the first place. They dive into the principles of an appropriate and intentional warm-up routine, and the purpose that it serves to prime you for your day’s training, whatever that training may be!
Based on the principles that founded Pre-Script, RX’D Programming is intentionally designed to address the mobility and stability of the hip, shoulder and spine: Mobility-Stability-Strength™.
Range of motion helps to address stability, and with functional stability of the joint comes an increase in force output under load.
Without mobility and stability, THERE IS NO STRENGTH.
The Pre-Script team is very proud to get to talk about this with you in today’s RX’D Radio, and we’re very excited to hear what you have to say about it.
PREPARATION IS RECOVERY.
Of course, you can expect the usual banter, shade-throwing, and some occasional side-eye from the duo this week, too.
GET RX’D PROGRAMMING, and GET MOVING.

This week, RX’D Radio welcomes the return of Pre-Sript’s Head Coach in Canada, Killian Hamilton, as well as Powerlifter and Real Estate Entrepreneur, Marcus Leoni. Jordan Shallow and his guests flex their brains in this episode as they talk philosophy and share book titles.
The trio discuss the morals and messages underlying the works and how they relate to the current state of society under quarantine. Rebellion as an expression of individual truth threads a common theme throughout, and the primal nature of humans at odds with the stressors of modern society exemplifies that theme. Contemplating life in the Serengeti, The Scorpion and the Frog, and musing on such controversial topics as religion, stoicism, naziism and the perpetuation of fear make this episode one you should definitely turn up!

A trained second-degree black belt in Japanese Jiujitsu, Kevin's athletic career has spanned competitive powerlifting to Spartan Racing. He now enjoys coaching both Crossfit and Spartan Racing.
Jordan and Kevin cover the topic of intelligent programming for conditioning in strength sports. Kevin describes his approach to programming for conditioning as a mix of aerobic and anaerobic exercises that can be used to optimize carry over to strength. He focuses on utilizing low-skill exercises to minimize the risk of injury and maximize output. Kevin lives the example of leading from the front, participating with his gym members in team events to encourage their growth and success. Women are built differently than men. Following a training program that gets the best results for a man may not work all that well for a woman. There may be adjustments needed on volume, intensity, position, etc. But these slight adjustments can lead to better performance.
In today’s episode of RX’D Radio, Shallow and Jiunta are joined by Kayla as they talk about alterations in training based on gender differences. They share their own experiences and knowledge on the changes needed. The predisposition of a person, muscle fiber type, hormones, morphology, and receptivity are some things they discuss as they go over how each affects the movement and performance of a person.

Gun possession laws, checking per unit prices of eggs, and sham fitness programs. Sometimes people do dumb things, or they get away with a lot. This is what we see happening all the time. The world revolves around money, and your perception of your value may be different from the world.

We’re seeing hyper specificity in sports training when people should be building up resiliency and strength. Doing the sport already trains you to do that sport. Engaging in hyper specificity could lead to greater imbalance and more injuries.
In this episode of RX’D Radio, our special guest, Dr. Clementina Russo, talks about the importance of intention in program design. Intention plays a big role when it comes to training. Where we want to be, influences the choices we will make.
Dr. Clementina shares where her choices have led her and discusses with the guys the problem that happens when people who don’t have the knowledge and experience go around telling people what to do.
It’s about time we think more deeply why we’re lifting weights and doing squats. Is your program helping you to reach your goal? What is your end goal? If you want to level up your exercise programming, don't forget to subscribe and tune in to RX'D Radio!

No one likes to learn base principles anymore. Social media has made it easy for people to just watch a YouTube video on lifting and do it themselves. Skill acquisition is fundamental in the mastery of any craft. To prevent injury, you need to have knowledge of the marriage between movement, anatomy, and physiology.
In this episode, Shallow and Jiunta have a chat with Killian Hamilton and go over the different stages of skill acquisition. They talk about the importance of having a deep understanding of any craft, the loss of respect for lifting, and specialization as a valuable skill.
We get a bird’s eye view of the interplay of learning and application. If you want to get a deeper understanding of mastering the art of lifting, make sure to tune in to RX'D Radio for the detailed discussion!

Social media has made it easy for anyone to claim that they’re strength coaches or business owners or whatever title they can think of that they are not qualified for. While some people spend years of study and practice before they would even promote themselves like that, more and more people are spreading wrong information online that could potentially lead to injury.
In today’s episode of RX’D Radio, Shallow and Jiunta talk about treating low back pain by looking at biomechanics, function, and psychology. They both express their irritation towards so-called strength coaches who use their bias and influence to promote outdated practices. This makes it important for real coaches to step up and challenge those people spreading misinformation.

To be a competitive athlete, choosing your weightlifting coach is critical. You would like to improve your strength and conditioning and learn the proper lifting techniques from a skilled coach who fully understands the athletic experience. A good coach is someone who has a competitive experience and a genuine understanding of weightlifting training programming.
In today's episode of RX'D Radio, we're on the show with weightlifting coach Zack Telander to talk in detail about the world of weightlifting coaching as a profession. He also shares how he uses YouTube as a platform to provide informative content and to reach a wider audience.
If you want to level up your training programming, don't forget to subscribe and tune in to RX'D Radio for the detailed discussion!
About Our Guest
Zack Telander is an outstanding coach in weightlifting, CrossFit, and to multiple sports at Texas A&M University and Northwestern University. Zack has a USAW-Level 2 coaching certification and is a weightlifting coach at Juggernaut Training Systems and Texas A&M.
How Should Weightlifting Programming Look Like
Getting Into Weightlifting
- Zack grew up as an athlete in a very athletic home. Playing high school football drew him to the weight room.
- After graduating from the University of Vermont, he went to a CrossFit gym, and there he was inspired to be a coach.
- After he got his level one in CrossFit, he started to advance. In 2014, he started training with one of the coaches and did his first weightlifting meet.
- He eventually got his USAW-Level One and got a full-time job as a CrossFit coach.
- As a CrossFit coach, he was able to teach non-athletic people the "snatch, and the clean and jerk" on a high volume.
- The golden standard for getting into strength and conditioning is passing the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam.
- After passing the CSCS exam, he got an internship at Northwestern University and Texas A&M University. When he got into College Station, he started competing again on weightlifting and started personal training for profit.
Using YouTube as a Platform
- In 2016, he started getting into YouTube. After a while, he started making and uploading CrossFit videos.
- After releasing his videos, a guy commented that there's no story in his content.
- For Zack, he wanted to deliver his expertise and combat issues on the CrossFit community. He started writing and doing voice overs to try and give solutions to these problems.
- From 1,000 views, he has now reached almost 100,000 subscribers.
Weightlifting Coaching as a Career
- He does remote coaching and coaching in-person.
- Physical coaching is essential for development.
- Actual interaction is critical in being a coach. Coaches have to know how to interact and how to calm people down.
- In terms of ROI, weightlifting coaching as a profession is always going to be relatively low.
- Most weightlifting coaches do it out of passion, but they have other sources of income.
Remote Coaching and RPE
- You can get a lot stronger with low percentage squats. It's all about positioning and speed.
- Rate of perceived exertion or RPE is the rating on how hard you work. It's hard to perform a good rate with dynamic movements such as snatch, clean and jerk.
- Max Aita, the Head of Juggernaut Training Systems Weightlifting Coach, and Zack's mentor invented a scale for RPE.
- Zack, on the other hand, gives ranges with the eye. By following those rules, they can go as heavy or as light as they want.
- He uses these techniques to breed a culture in the gym and instill to people that he coaches.
Ideal Movement
- The only real prescription for training is an ideal movement.
- Overload movements like poles or squats are heavier and more fatiguing than clean and jerk or snatch.
- There are many tricks you can do if your lifter is fatigued and is not feeling good instead of just putting in arbitrary percentages.
- When you introduce novelty, the person just forgets that they're lifting heavy.
Periodization Models
- Block periodization: Working on one aspect of training; this can be (1) muscle building, (2) muscular endurance, and (3) strength.
- Concurrent periodization: Here, you're working on all three aspects, but you undulate the amount of intensity and load in each phase.
- Daily undulating periodization: If you stress the body, it needs time to recover.
- The real trick of programming is understanding how you can emotionally tap into the athlete without scaring them.
Gauging System
- To gauge an athlete's performance, he watches them every day. The system is feedback; communicate consistently to athletes as a coach.
- Reporting fatigue is very hard for athletes, and it takes years of training to understand how to accurately and efficiently assess your own fatigue.
- You have to determine how many days you're going to implement stressors (e.g., very high intensities clean and jerk).
- As a coach, you have to see all the factors and what's happening and make the right adjustments unique to each athlete.
Outlook on Programming
- Focus on the quality of the execution as the end goal.
- As an athlete, you have to take responsibility on how to regulate and make adjustments for yourself.
- You also have to be interested in experimenting, changing, and holding yourself accountable. Your coach is just there to guide you through all that.
- Zack works mostly with college students, and he realized they don't really understand a lot of these concepts.
- It is essential to be interested in the sport enough to learn about the simplest to the most complex terminologies.
- If athletes understand what they're getting into, they will not end up quitting.
Subscribe to Zack's Patreon and have access to his programs for only $1. You can also reach him through Instagram or by sending him an email at coachzacktelander@gmail.com for coaching inquiries. Subscribe to his YouTube channel to learn more about his techniques.
