Some MONSTER episodes to be coming at you every Wednesday morning!
This episode is a real treat to release as our great colleague, Morgan Denny, PT joins us for an in depth discussion on all the aspects of her passion filled career. Her influence as a teacher, a clinician, a leader, and as a friend has been consistently positive, and its no wonder we feel like we always learn something from her when she shares stories like the ones on this episode.
Morgan Denny received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Montana in 2006. She has focused her work in outpatient orthopedic settings, addressing conditions and people of all sorts, both in the United States and around the globe. Morgan believes that it is hard to be happy without first being healthy, and holds a strong belief that all people should have access to the resources they need to lead able-bodied and fulfilling lives. With this in mind, she began traveling to Haiti to provide rehabilitative therapy in 2013, and found passion in addressing the need in this country.
While Morgan’s professional life has focused on physical therapy, she is also a strong advocate for implementing sustainable living practices. She spent two years creating a non-profit project called EcoJaunt, whose mission was to travel throughout the United States creating how-to videos that teach sustainable living tactics, which were then presented at schools and community forums, and on the website EcoJaunt.org.
Morgan is a conservationist and strives to reuse everything possible in order to decrease unnecessary waste that will pollute the environment. She has seen the importance of this practice worldwide, in travels through India, Nepal, Fiji, and Haiti, where waste clutters the streets and waterways, creating increasing health concerns. Morgan believes this to be a particularly important concept in Haiti, where the waste disposal system is lacking and water is unsafe for consumption.
While her treatment focus in Oregon has included orthopedic conditions and sports rehab, Morgan also enjoys working with pediatric and neurological cases abroad. Before becoming a PT, Morgan worked in a variety of settings (camps, clinics, therapeutic riding facilities) with diverse populations including children and adults with disabilities, varying neurological disorders, and children with systemic diseases, such as cancer and cystic fibrosis.
Contact Morgan and stay on top of her lectures and blogs at www.standhaitiproject.org and www.ptonice.com
In this passion-fueled conversation we reflect on some deeper realizations that have struck us recently. A lot of our discussion generates a general yet powerful recommendation, to become very curious. Do so early, and often, and especially if you're going into a service industry. If you're curious, you'll be more likely to build awareness of the influences of business and how it can interact with our behaviors and lives.
Some very wise words are shared by Will in this episode in particular. If were going to passionately express our observation of a struggle we've gone through, we might as well deliver some action steps in case others find themselves also struggling. Will highlights 3 key business principles that, when mastered, can make any person more valuable to a business (in terms of employment-more hirable). The funny thing is, you don't even really have to master these functions, just be better than some others are and you can help them.
- Generate new leads or potential customers
- Convert leads or potential customers into customers
- Retain customers for repeated service
When do we really learn how the basics of all that works? As Will and Nick describe, its never too late to learn. Check out the facebook group "Healthcare Digital Marketing" with Will and Alex Engar, those two are producing some incredible content and sharing solutions that can take your career to another level.
In this episode we sit down with recent Ph.D. recipient, Dr. Brian Leung from the University of Southern California. Dr. Leung was awarded his Ph.D. for doing research on the connection between the immune system and neurological disorders. You definitely aren't going to want to miss this one!
If you want to follow Dr. Leung and his work, keep up with him on Twitter at:
In this reflective episode, your grateful hosts Will and Nick sit down to discuss all the transformations that have occurred since the beginning of the podcast.
Together we have interviewed so many fabulous people and expanded our knowledge of so many topics. Its a shock to think that it's been two years since these episodes have been shared on iTunes, but the reward for sticking with the process this long is certainly proving to be invaluable.
One of the greatest overarching themes we wanted to share with our listeners today is the action steps that have been shared with us over and over again. That starting something that will allow you to be creative or support your passion is a MUST - especially if it's not perfect at first. That common traits across great health care providers do exist, and what are they exactly? That learning never stops and the people you share that journey with are just as important as the destination.
Cheers and much love for the guests, the audience and supporters, and the mentors that have helped us learn as much as we have. The lessons and stories will always keep us hungry.
Collaborative efforts toward the success of a team mission can be a major success story when they pan out. This weeks episode features two guests, Casey Hanes and Ty Fischer, who have been collaborating to create a stellar project of their own, and we discuss the factors that go into making that team work successful.
Casey and Ty are the hosts of "The Show with Casey and Ty", and if you haven't already checked them out, stop listening to this podcast and go tune into theirs! These guys go into a whirl wind of topics that all seem so relevant to the fitness, health, happiness, growth - mindset world.
As fitness coaches, Casey and Ty have both established themselves as well respected resources as they both are excellent coachers and movers themselves. Thats just part of the recipe for dream-work team-work though, and we dive into how core values, character similarities and disparities, and complimentary behaviors also factor in.

For this episode your hosts Will and Nick decided to sit down and hash out some of the most transformative decisions they've made in their careers. This discussion doesn't have a whole lot of "new" theory behind it, but its a really cool opportunity to connect with others who feel like we do - curious.
What's it like on the other side of the fence? What if I choose something totally against the grain? What if my backup career plan fails? How do I explain myself to people wondering what I'm doing with my career?
Naturally, our discussion is packed with analogies and butchered science references. We somehow manage to tie together Newton's laws of motion into our professional trajectory, as well as profess our love for the Institute of Clinical Excellence. But the take home message we really want to drive home is answering those questions above for ourselves.
We want other health/medical professionals, students, or anyone just trying to make a difference in this world to chase down their curiosity. This is a short life for many of us, so use your most important commodity (time) to explore your passions. There is no right or wrong first action step, just that you TAKE action.

When I jumped on board with this project I progressed through the feelings of curiosity and anxiety and found growth. In this episode I dive into how that growth process has influenced my endeavors, from school to podcasting, and hopefully I coherently share how its still guiding me today. - Nick
I decided to mix it up a little this week. Nick and I get reached out to frequently (which still boggles our mind that people want to talk to us!) and regularly get asked about our career paths. With that in mind I wanted this to be a raw, un-cut look into the different possibilities I am exploring with my healthcare background. Hope this brings some value to all our healthcare friends! - Will

In this fascinating episode we dive into all sorts of topics. From the many layers of consciousness that impact mental health, to the possible solutions our society may benefit from if we can work together to integrate a holistic health service. Our guest, Dr. Traci Stein was wonderfully informative, fun, and a real inspiration to keep reaching out to other do-gooders, because more often than not good folks tend to work well together.
Dr. Traci Stein's bio:
"I am a Columbia-trained, licensed clinical psychologist and health educator. I'm also certified in clinical hypnosis by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH). Broadly, my focus has been on helping people to reduce uncomfortable physical and emotional symptoms and gain greater insight into who they are and want to be.
The bulk of my work has been with the medically ill and those experiencing chronic pain, as well as teaching people to develop better stress management tools. I have also helped clients learn how to create healthier relationships, develop better self-esteem, foster greater self-compassion, release unhealthy patterns, and reach goals that are important to them."

The world of Saidee Wynn, taken from her blog spooniewarrior
"I didn’t choose the Spoonie life, the Spoonie life chose me.
If you aren’t sure what a Spoonie is, I urge you to look up the Spoon Theory. It’s a pretty awesome story that describes life with a chronic illness. Energy = Spoons (to sum it up in a super short way that doesn’t do the actual story justice…). It has become a symbol for those of us with chronic illnesses. Basically, we never have enough spoons.
I am currently fighting POTS, EDS, PTSD, and many other letter groupings. I feel like I’m out there trying to capture the entire alphabet! My symptoms from these illnesses have rendered me disabled and dramatically changed the way I interact with the world. They have also forced me to redefine myself in my current roles in life.
I am the mother of a super spunky, energetic little girl. I also have an amazing partner in life, who is absolutely my rock. You’ll be learning more about them as you follow my blog, because they will obviously be the subjects of many posts."

“A Positive Perspective To Help The Stressed Or Depressed Student”
A big thanks goes out to Dr. Ryan Smith for joining the Knowbodies once again to deliver a powerful message to the PT and college student community. With research officially listing PT and other healthcare professions as occupations topping the list for burnout, its no surprise that some of the younger, less experienced members of these communities feel the stress early on. Will, Eric, and Nick were so fortunate to sit down with Ryan as he shared his personal experience with depression and how it impacted his professional and emotional well-being. Special recognition goes to Cruz Romero, SPT for his recent publication in The Pulse: “My Biggest Challenge in Physical Therapy School? Imposter Syndrome”. Cruz’s writing really hits home with a lot of students pushing through difficult programs, and is a great read for anyone looking to gain insight and direction to overcome some of the common struggles that may accompany PT school.
Ryan’s biography taken from his website: uMove Physiotherapy & Performance
Ryan graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a bachelors degree in Athletic Training in 2013 and graduated from Ohio State University with a doctoral degree in physical therapy in 2016.
“My career being involved in rehabilitation and wellness began when I was an athletic trainer as an undergraduate. Even then I developed a niche for being the “rehab guy.” Even when I look back on those times and realize how little I knew I had an ability to connect with those athletes. It wasn’t because of a superior set of skills or vast knowledge but it was because I understood what a recovery from in an injury during an athlete’s season meant to them and I simply found ways to help them.
Fast forward a few years and that same mindset has carried over into how I practice as a physical therapist. My expectations that I thought my internships would be versus what reality gave me were vastly different. For that reason I decided to go out on my own so I could get back to treating the patient in front of me and get involved directly within the community.
That decision has led me to be involved with both a Crossfit Gym and a Strength and Conditioning gym. I now have the ability to not only work with individuals on a daily basis in an environment that they love but I get to work on community issues that I have a passion for. Youth athletes and the increasing injuries that seem to be occurring in them and general population health in which Crossfit is tackling with movement, nutrition and recovery.
If you have ever been interested in joining, starting or learning about a cash based PT practice, then check out our first interview with Dr. Ryan Smith as he breaks down his story, going right into the cash PT market right out of school!
This leads me to now. I’m a small business owner. An entrepreneur. An athletic trainer. A doctor of physical therapy.
I deeply value and understand that it is the entire person in front of me that I have to consider. It’s never just a pain, just a knee, just a shoulder. It’s what that means as a whole.
Thus through continuing education, mentors and most importantly the experiences that my patients give provide me is what keeps me engaged in a constant learning process to better myself. This way when it comes down to it I deliver reassurance, help and a plan that leads to a continuation in training, recovery from injury and a return to activity without hesitation or pain.”
Show Notes:
- We catch up with Ryan, and discuss his background with depression and how it came about
- We explore the implications of depression on school work, social life and motivation

In this roundtable podcast, The Knowbodies have a spirited conversation regarding some of the mobile apps related to fitness, wellness, and nutrition that have helped us set and achieve some of our new year’s resolutions.
If you are looking for extra incentive to walk or run and would ALSO like to serve a great cause by helping to raise money then check out CHARITYMILES or WOOFTRAX for a unique way to change your daily walk with your dog or lunchtime stroll into a charitable cause.
For a more running focused app with a fun story based twist, maybe ZOMBIES RUN! Is more up your alley. ZOMBIES mixes short audio book story segments with your own motivational music (and little something extra that I won’t spoil here) to create a motivational and addicting change of pace.
Rounding up the fitness apps is a nod to the fantastic minds at DAREBEE.COM and their PANDORA role-playing fitness game that allows the user to participate in countless physical fitness challenges in order to progress the story.
From a nutritional standpoint, we throw our support behind FOODUCATE and FITMENCOOK for their affordable apps and the information that they provide. FOODUCATE takes complex nutritional concepts and breaks them down into digestible tidbits. Additionally, FOODUCATE has a scan/search option that you can use on your household foods or when grocery shopping to provide a snapshot of the nutritional content of foods and even provides a grade scale to help you make healthy food choices.
FITMENCOOK is a cheap encyclopedia of recipes that take the complexity out of healthy cooking. With FITMENCOOK you can categorize the recipes into diet specific goals (i.e. low- carb, high protein, low sugar) and even organize your next grocery-shopping trip to help you plan ahead for some healthy cooking for the week.
Healthy habits are tough to maintain and good habits are often more than simply checking off the list. Often it takes mental toughness and realistic goal setting in order to keep a healthy habit rolling once the stresses of life start to pile up.
Some mobile apps like APLANFORLIVING and HABITICA can help provide the structure and reward feedback that might just help you keep your resolutions through the good times and the tough times. APLANFORLIVING is the modern day digital diary with pre-organized sections for assessing your mood, practicing gratitude, and even voicing your frustrations. Even for the non-diary users, this app provides all the structure and requires so little time that it might just be what you need to help improve your mood and assess your stressors.
HABITICA is the final app we cover in this episode and it may be one that you have already come across. HABITICA is an enormous online community of users that take a retro-style gaming approach to helping you set and achieve your goals. HABITICA bases your experience around building and upgrading a character in your likeness that thrives when you enter daily to-do lists, refine healthy habits, and complete pre-organized challenges (e.g. daily walking, reading, or self-reflection). In contrast, if you allow these goals to go on uncompleted, your sprite suffers the consequences and could lose life or points for even more motivation to keep your resolutions! If you are motivated by games and list-making, this app is the one you need to help organize and refine your habits!
Take a listen to hear more about these fantastic apps as well as some personal stories from The Knowbodies on our experiences with mobile apps and goal-setting.
Until next time,
It’s your body, know it!

Bonus! After we wrapped up recording with Andrew Wade MS, RDN, LDN of Case Specific Nutrition, we managed to bend his ear for a little while longer and were fortunate enough to get it on tape as we did. In this supplement recording, we get a sneak peak into Andrew’s secret protein shake recipe and the sunregulated of foods. We also come to a conclusion on the topic of diet needs, especially for younger and female athletes and how specific considerations need to be appreciated and likely promoted with the rising number of younger athletes participating today. We venture from the norm for a while to softball some ideas for the future of food management, food shopping, and food waste. Finally, we touch on the diet requirements and utility of supplements when considering a vegetarian diet.
In this episode we are fortunate to have on the show Andrew Wade MS, RDN, LDN of Case Specific Nutrition located right here in Pittsburgh. Andrew is Pittsburgh’s formal diet and nutrition authority contributing his work via his multiple blog sites and also the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Get to know Andrew more by clicking here.
Today, The Knowbodies talk about how Andrew’s consulting and services company “Case Specific Nutrition” came to be and discuss some of the unique aspects of diet counseling that Andrew has developed from personal experience and over the years with his clients. Andrew breaks down the nuances of diet management when it comes to the mindset of the dieting individual, what makes nutritional planning effective, and some of the tools that he has developed to help clients stay on course despite hectic schedules and lifestyles.
We tackle some of the toughest questions when it comes to diet management like: How accurate are the daily calorie allowances that are advertised on common foods? How does the athlete’s diet differ from the everyday Joe? And what strategies can a work-a-holic use to help them be more regimented in their meal planning once the time crunch of the workweek starts?

Dr. Erin Williams-Hatala
In this episode the Knowbodies were extremely excited to learn from Dr. Hatala about the Human hand, her involvement as a researcher and her captivating perspective on the evolution of human behavior that has molded the adaptations our hands poses today. In this podcast you we explore the following topics:
- The curious transition into a career in Hominid Paleobiology (and how easily that title rolls off Dr. Hatala’s tongue)
- The fascinating theories of human evolution and the impact our ancestor’s behavior had on forging the bodies we have now

- We discuss theories supporting the importance of our hands and the anatomical significance of how different wed be without them
- How do male crabs impress the ladies?
- Is there potential for the hand to continue to evolve given our modernized lifestyles
- Why cant a chimp win the prize at a carnival ball toss? Can chimps throw better or worse then humans?
Dr. Hatala’s BIOGRAPHY
I was born in Ann Arbor, MI and lived there through high school. I moved to Grinnell, IA to attend Grinnell College where I studied Anthropology and Archaeology. In 2005 I joined the Hominid Paleobiology Doctoral Program in The George Washington University’s Center for the Advanced Study of Hominid Paleobiology, in Washington, DC. I received a Masters in Anthropology in 2007, a MPhil in Hominid Paleobiology in 2009, and a PhD in the same discipline in 2011. My dissertation and research as a NSF and L’Oreal USA for Women in Science postdoctoral fellow focused on human functional anatomy, the influence of biomechanical regiments on the evolution of human upper limb anatomy, and the biomechanics of making and using Paleolithic tools. I am very excited about beginning a new phase of research with a group of international collaborators, investigating the anatomy, functional anatomy, and biomechanics of (mainly tool-using) non-human primates.

In this roundtable discussion, The Knowbodies reflect on our recent podcast with Dr. Erin Williams-Hatala on the evolutionary significance of the human hand and how specific adaptations may have paved the way for the development of the modern human. Among other tangents, the conversation covers thoughts on common pathologies related to recent technology trends, self- assessment to prevent overuse injury, and sneak peaks into some upcoming interview candidates.
In this episode, the Knowbodies learn about neurological therapy and how it breaks the mold from the conventional thoughts of physical therapy. Where does neuro-therapy fit in to the rehab process and what sorts of patients can best utilize this sort of therapy?
Shownotes:
Mike shares with us some stories of his unique relationships with patients that are coping with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and more.
“Community-based” therapy settings have grown into a large part of the medical management for progressive neurological conditions. These communal activities not only tackle patient impairments and goal setting head on, but also provide patients with a support system and resources for sharing their experiences that have proven to be effective for helping patient cope with the disease process. The knowbodies push the issue of how a physical therapist can act as a conduit for connecting patients with resources and compatible social networks in order to improve their experience and mental constitution.
Mike is an accredited clinician of LSVT BIG, a dedicated exercise program designed to maximize the functional movement potential of patients with parkinsonian symptoms by emphasizing large and exaggerated movements in an organized protocol. This program helps to counter the common symptom progression of many patients and allows them to maintain active lifestyles and continue to enjoy physical pastimes.
Because of the emerging evidence, community outreach, and increasing access to information for patients, neurological therapies are one of the fastest growing fields of healthcare. As the complex healthcare system continues to evolve with our aging population, neuro- therapy offers endless options to enhance patient care and develop creative outlets for aspiring therapists interested in combatting neurological movement disorders and becoming a part of the neuro- community!
Mike's Self-Written Bio:
Graduated from University of Pittsburgh in 2010 with a BS in rehab science and Certificate in Pathokinesiology. Continued On the DPT curriculum at Chatham University graduating in 2012. From undergraduate studies through PT school I worked as a rehabilitation aide in a variety of healthcare settings which is what really sparked my interests in musculoskeletal and neurological physical therapy. I began as a float physical therapist with a local outpatient company and within the company I began to see the influx of neurological patients that were not receiving neurological geared treatment. I was able to initiate community based educational sessions for the neurological population and subsequently an opportunity arose for me to switch gears and accept a position with a local hospital-based outpatient facility. Here I was able to expand my knowledge and treatment styles with musculoskeletal and neurological clients. Over the course of the first year, I became more interested with the neurological facet and started to reach out to this population and helped initiate some great programs for individuals with neurological impairment. Now, over 2 years later, I am seeing roughly a 60-40 neuromuscular to musculoskeletal client ratio which has been exciting and beneficial to those in the area of our facility.

The third installment to our mini series on leadership entails an awesome video chat between the Knowbodies and Gene Shirokobrod. What a great experience it was to have a down to earth conversation with a guy who has carved such a prolific path on social media and motivated us to share his work.
Bio: Dr. Gene Shirokobrod is a physical therapist guided by entrepreneurial passion. He is the CEO of Verve LLC, who along with his business partner Corey Fleischer, developed and created arc. In 2014, arc was successfully funded on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, raising over $30k in 40 days. With the Ryder Cup happening this weekend, we thought it was a good time to have a conversation about the world's most insufferable game, golf. We love golf. We are terrible at playing it, but we still love to get out there and play, even if we have to curse our way through 18 holes. All that joy and frustration got us thinking: Will Tiger Woods win another major? What are the most common injuries that plague golfers? What can the casual golfer do to keep from getting injured?
The answers to our questions were graciously answered by our guest this week, Golf Physical Therapist, Ian Manning. Ian is the owner of Orthocore Physical Therapy in North Kingstown, Rhode Island and is certified through the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) to treat golf related injuries and to improve golf performance. He also is certified to use Dry Needling in his practice and during this episode, Ian gives us a little history about Dry Needling as well as the process he goes through to determine if someone would benefit from it.
Here is some of Ian's background and training, taken from his Orthocore Physical Therapy wesbite:
Ian Manning graduated with his Masters degree in Physical Therapy from Northeastern University in 2004. Ian has always worked with orthopedic based injuries. Starting in school with his co-op/clinical rotations leading into his professional career as a PT. He is constantly working to continue his education through course work and staying current with research. Ian is certified through the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) to treat golf related injuries and to improve golf performance.
