On today’s episode Jose and Victor talk about being able to practice what you preach! Our team has long encouraged our community to stay active and build their knowledge base as early on as possible.
In the beginning of the episode, Victor uses the perfect example of the cardiologist who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day, eats McDonald's and then advises his patients on health habits. As PTs we have the opportunity to do something great for our patients and instill lifelong lifestyle changes. However, that responsibility requires us to practice what we preach and become experts on the matter!

First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2020 is officially behind us and its time to get the ball rolling on 2021!
On today's episode Victor and Jose talk about physical therapy conferences and study groups in PT school. They explain how these conferences work and share some personal experiences and opinions on conferences so that you know what to expect from them and are better prepared to take advantage of them. Regarding study groups, they compare their personal experiences with study groups in undergrad vs study groups in PT school and what worked best for them to get through graduate school as well as the board exam.
Surprisingly, Victor and Jose had, what they describe as, "polar opposite" experiences for both of these topics. Tune in to learn why!

In this episode Victor and Jose talk about how to deal with words of discouragement from loved ones. One of the students in our Pre-PT Mentorship Facebook Group went through a similar experience with a family member and was having trouble understanding their comments.
We have to keep in mind that when it comes to those closest to us, a lot of the times they don’t have bad intentions. However, the most important thing to take away from all of this is that you are in control of your own future. Acknowledge what they say, interpret their comments, and move with your best foot forward because YOU are in control of your future. No one else.

In the first episode, they made sure to tackle this from more an objective perspective -- talking of all the financial implications that come along with pursuing becoming a physical therapist.
All in all, this field will be exactly what you make of it. The same applies for any other career people choose to pursue.

On today’s episode we take on one of the questions we received in our Pre-PT Mentorship Group. This particular student is facing a difficult decision trying to decide whether or not to accept 3 interviews following an acceptance into their top choice.
This episode is particularly interesting because we disagree with the majority of students in how to approach this situation. We believe it is vital for every student to hear both sides of every situation so they can come up with the best decision for their current circumstance. Enjoy!

In this episode we reiterate how important it really is to understand what your interviewer is looking for and how to convince them that you are the right person for the seat you're interviewing for.
In any sale there is a buyer, a seller and a product. Being the interviewee is a unique position to be in because you are both the seller . . . and the product!
When you understand what your interviewer's desires are, you can better set up your interview preparation to fit the mold of the student they want.

As we continue this series of PT school interview podcast episodes, we tackle the interview from a different perspective. You've probably heard us talk about the importance of minimizing risk associated with your PT application and today we teach you how to do just that.
Outside of this very important goal of minimizing risk, one very important task every interviewee has is to showcase their strengths! Just like there are certain weak spots in most students' applications, there are also strength. These strengths are ones that you want to bring to light and make your interviewer aware of. Towards the end of this episode we also mention the significance behind closing the interview and sealing the deal. Enjoy!

We talk about the most important question you are answering during this interview and that is:
"How do you make their facility a better place for physical therapy care?"

Once you take this into daily practice, the return you get will always be greater than what you give. The physical therapists you are shadowing will notice and so will your friends, family, and peers!

“What is the job market going to look like for us upon graduating from PT school following the COVID19 pandemic?”
Make sure to listen to the full episode to hear both Jose and Victor's take on this, as both clinic directors and soon-to-be PT school grads, respectively.

In this episode Jose and Victor go over a belief that they truly try to live by as physical therapists and health care providers and that is that you need to be able and willing to practice what you preach.
If you’re listening to this podcast today and attempting to get into PT school, rest assured that as future physical therapists you will be pushing healthy lifestyle changes to your future patients!
Would you listen to a financial advisor that just filed for bankruptcy? Or listen to business advice from someone who’s never owned a business? Probably not, right? So its time we all start practicing what we preach!

One of the questions that trips up most students when filling out their pre-PT application is "Does your academic record accurately reflect your capabilities?" If the majority of us think back to our undergraduate experience, we can think of a few classes that we felt we could've done better in. Because of this, a lot of students feel like they can answer "no".
If you choose to answer no and fill out the short essay response make sure to keep in mind who is reading your responses -- professors! So don't blame your class outcomes on poor teaching or issues you had with previous professors.
In this episode we discuss who should and should not answer this question. Make sure to tune in to the full episode!

It's hard to find someone today who doesn't have some sort of social media account. The truth is that for many people social media takes up way more time than it should. Scrolling through Instagram looking at what other people are up to is very different from posting content you are passionate about to educate others.
Our hope for you is that with this episode all of you come to the realization that social media has the power to connect us and give us a voice, but also has the power to consume us and have us waste time on nonsensical things that mean close to nothing.

"Do you and Victor see yourself retiring as PTs? Or is there something else that you'd like to pursue after? (ie. teaching at a DPT program, pursuing leading PT full time etc etc)"
"How are you guys managing your time effectively like studying for the GRE, filling out PTCAS, staying on top of deadlines, and studying for classes and destressing?"

A few days ago Jose was asked an important question that he often receives from friends and family who are unaware of what we do at Leading PT -- "What do you do with Leading PT?"
This got him thinking of how important it is to be able to answer a simple question like this. Although we are aware that the majority of you as pre-PTs might not own your own companies and be asked a question exactly like this, many of you will be asked something along the lines of . . . "Why did you decide to pursue the field of physical therapy?"
In this episode we will review exactly why it is critical that you understand how to answer this question!

Victor is going to be talking about an interesting strategy that a Pre-PT thought of and is going to attempt in hopes that they can get into a cheaper program rather than the one they are currently accepted for. Spoiler: it involved applying in two separate application cycles!
Also, Victor is going to share his biggest fear, which he has never shared before in hopes that it motivates you to take action and build the life you want for yourself.

There are many different opinions within the field of physical therapy when it comes to PT residencies following completion of DPT programs. There's no denying the benefits of continuing education and honing in on your craft while completing a residency, however, there are a few cons that come to mind.
Many students are looking to finally come into this field and start treating patients and make a steady income. Outside of that, countless students find themselves having to move away from home for PT school and requiring residencies would likely cause students to do the same once again.
Make sure to listen to the episode to hear what Jose and Victor's opinions are on the matter!

In this episode Jose and Victor discuss the important distinction between physical therapy settings and treating populations. This is a concept that is often misunderstood between pre-PTs and even SPTs. Luckily for all of us, either pursuing this field or currently practicing, there are many varying settings that we can eventually work in. We know many clinicians that have worked in multiple settings and feel "refreshed" by the change of pace!
Having a good understanding of these different settings will give you an advantage over other pre-PT students. Make sure to listen to the full episode to hear all we have to say about each of these individually!

PTCAS is officially open and that means you need to get that PTCAS essay prompt done! Today we're going to talk in depth about this prompt, why these essays are important, and the mindset you need to have when it comes to writing these essays.
An important factor when writing this essay is making sure your voice shines through AND that the person editing your essay avoids putting their own voice into it. This is something we take very seriously when we do our essay editing and that we encourage you to think about when deciding who you want editing your essay.
We also talk about the upcoming PTCAS Essay Workshop that SOLD OUT in less than 20 hours!! Don't worry, there's going to be another workshop because of the high demand and the details are discussed in this episode.

"What impact will COVID-19 have on the competitiveness of the 2020 vs 2021 application cycle? Do you think more people will delay applying by a year, thus increasing total applicant numbers and making it more competitive in 2021?"

One of the major false beliefs we see in pre-PT students is the idea that it is impossible to get into PT school with an average to below average GPA. Both Victor and Jose are real life examples of why we shouldn't fixed on this idea.
At face value, GPA does hold a lot of weight when it comes to your pre-PT application. However, there are 6 other factors discussed in this episode that can help distinguish yourself as an applicant. To top it all off, once you get into PT school, chances are you'll never be asked what your GPA is again! Yep, that includes PT school and trust me, your future employer won't care either!

In Michael Jordan's "Last Dance" documentary, we were made aware of MJ's killer mindset. Every year he came into the league he had one goal . . . to win an NBA championship at all costs. The Leading PT Virtual Event 2020 is complete and turned out to be a huge success! Jose and Victor could not be happier with the way it turned out and have been extremely appreciative of all the positive feedback that they have been receiving from those that attended. However, as successful as it was, there was an equal amount of struggles that had to be overcome leading up to the event.
In this episode, Jose goes over some of the struggles that were faced leading up to the event and the motivations for making this event become a reality regardless of the circumstances.
This episode is a little bit different than the previous episodes you've heard but we hope this can motivate you to keep pursuing your dreams regardless of how difficult the journey may seem. Enjoy!

When you see Jose and Victor, we hope that you see two individuals who genuinely enjoy giving back to the pre-PT community. However, they weren't always viewed as mentors, coaches, or leaders in this profession. On the contrary, in this episode they state that they could make a longer list of mistakes than they can of successes. Like many of you, they were once pre-PT students that at one point failed courses, dropped classes, were told to pursue other professions, and more!
Within every failure lies great opportunity.
The difference between these two leaders and others is that they not only overcame their failures and obstacles, they also made it a life's mission to teach all of you how to avoid making the same mistakes.
In this episode, they go through some of their mistakes and what they would've done differently looking back at it now.

There are a lot of misconceptions and different opinions when it comes to working while matriculated in a DPT program. Truth is, schools don't want their students to work while attending their school.
The reason is simple.
They want to minimize risk when it comes to students potentially failing out of their program. Someone who is not working has more time to focus on their studies. However, that does not necessarily mean that they are efficient with that time.
Jose and Victor speak from personal experience in this episode, as they both worked throughout PT school.
