Whether it's because of his work on bass or behind the board, you have probably heard many works of Justin Meldal-Johnsen.  He worked with Beck for many many years.  He has worked with Nine Inch Nails.  He has produced albums for bands such as Jimmy Eat World, Paramore, and M83...  he has done it all, seen it all, and I am fortunate enough to have had him discuss it all in this episode.

JMJ is one of the entry way musicians for me as a bassist into gear-nerdom...  We talk gear, pedals, writing, and how all of that history goes into his work as a producer.  Whether you're a seasoned musician, a dabbler, a gear dork, or just a fan of music, this conversation is for you!

Dave Turncrantz is an incredibly talented and tasteful drummer that has arguably found himself in one of the most difficult positions in one of the best bands out there.  In Russian Circles he operates free of a click, but at the mercy of the layers and loops bing built around him.  How he pulls this off is something that has always bewildered me...  Fortunately I was able to discuss in detail over many many laughs.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 40: Phil Towle (the therapist from "Some Kind of Monster")

Phil Towle is probably best known for his work that was documented in the Metallica documentary, "Some Kind of Monster"; but honestly, he should be known as the shining light we all look for on the darkest of days.  A truly disarming, personable, and insightful guy with tons of great advice for bands at all levels.

Kirk Hammet of Metallica said "If Lennon and McCartney had Phil, the Beatles would never have broken up." The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 34: Clay Tarver (Chavez, Silicon Valley, & More)
63 perc 1. évad 34. rész Ross Hurt

Very excited about this episode. Clay Tarver has an incredibly impressive resume across several mediums...  You might know him for his innovative and angular guitar playing for bands like Chavez or Bullet Lavolta.  You might know him for his work on films like "Joyride".  Or maybe you know his work on hit shows like HBO's "Silicon Valley".  I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity to pick his brain on all of those!

The collaborative and creative process is a common theme in so many of these episodes, and this conversation dives right into an exploration of those across several mediums with a guy that has put out and produced some of the most engaging music, tv, and film over the years.

Chavez is currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of their seminal debut "Gone Glimmering", which is available via www.matadorrecords.com

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast ep 6 - Josh Newton (Shiner, Every Time I Die, & more)
62 perc 1. évad 6. rész Ross Hurt

I have been looking forward to this episode for a long time.  A while back, Josh sent me some mixes of what was possibly a Shiner album, with no real release details or anything, so I could not ask to have him on here to talk about it...

Well, now the album is out, and it is nothing short of phenomenal.  We talked about the writing process for this record, his evolution as a guitarist, got nerdy over some gear, talked horror movies, and much much more.

There is over an hour of additional conversation from this interview (as well as all previous interviews) over at the Rigs of Dad Patreon page - patreon.com/rigsofdad

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast Ep 5 - Tucker Rule (Thursday, Frank Iero & the Future Violents, and more)
68 perc 1. évad 5. rész Ross Hurt

I really really really really wanted to get Ja Rule on the show to talk about his work with Swizz Beats and Metallica, but ended up with his brother Tucker.

Most of you know Tucker as the drummer for Thursday, or maybe from his work with Frank Iero and the Future Violents...  But now you will have the opportunity to know him on a deeper level.  Don't just listen to what he says here... feel it.  I know I did!  You can and should check out his bands, and be sure to keep up with all things Tucker on his instagram page, which is @tuckerrule

We talked about his journey as a punk drummer playing basement shows to session player extraordinaire, sitting in with Seth Meyer's band amongst many other killer gigs.

Lots of nerdy deep dives in this conversation up on the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page.  Be sure to subscribe if you want early access to all episodes like this one and more, much much more.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast Episode 3 - Chris Johnson of Deafheaven
79 perc 1. évad 3. rész Ross Hurt

Many might know Chris Johnson as the bassist for the genre-redefining, grammy-nominated band Deafheaven...  But his ear and career (his CarEAR) goes much deeper than that.

I talked to Chris about wearing several different hats within the band world, whether it be a sound engineer, a recording engineer, a bassist, and more!  We talk about his insane Grammy experience and everything leading up to it, and we of course cut to the core of his being in the Lightning Crashes Round.

There are some stories that are simply too wild for the public, you can find that over at the Rigs of Dad Patreon page, along with extended interviews from previous guests.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast Ep 2: Christian Lembach
71 perc 1. évad 2. rész Ross Hurt

Christian Lembach is one of the most well-spoken, funny, and gear savvy guys out there making music these days.

We talked about everything from The Room, to his writing process, to what gives him some of the heaviest tones to hit the stage.  Beyond that, how his band Whores is handling the involuntary downtime.

While it's quiet for them now, they are still pumping out tunes, gear, and more.  Expect a busy second half of the year for these guys, and hear why.

The Rigs of Dad Prodcast Ep 1: Brian Cook (Russian Circles, Botch, These Arms Are Snakes, & more)
76 perc 1. évad 1. rész Ross Hurt

Social distancing cannot keep Ross and Brian Cook from a bicoastal bro-down.  Ross talks with Brian from Russian Circles, These Arms are Snakes, Botch, and more about everything from being a musician during a pandemic, to writing processes for different projects, to the importance of films like "Crank 2".

Great conversation.  Hard hitting questions.  More feels than a blindfolded grandmother at a fabric store.

Don't forget to subscribe and check out the Rigs of Dad Patreon for an extended episode and more.

One Love.  Jah Bless.  Stay Safe and keep your distance!
