Justin and I discuss how he leveraged a 3-person partnership to build a portfolio of single-family rental homes. We talk about early challenges they had to overcome and what the future looks like for their real estate investments.

Justin is a native Houstonian and an Aggie Petroleum engineer with 10 years’ experience working in the USA and abroad. Justin joined BG Group, a British O&G company, after graduating from Texas A&M and worked as a petroleum engineer in various roles in Egypt, the UK, Bolivia and Dallas. After Shell announced the BG Group acquisition, Justin transferred to Brisbane, Australia in 2015 to help develop a large coalbed methane field in Queensland with QGC. Justin returned back to Texas in 2018 to pursue his MBA at The University of Texas McCombs School of Business. After graduating, he joined Accenture Strategy as a Senior Strategy Consultant.

Deciding real estate is the best method to smooth out the volatility of our industry is the easy part. The challenge lies in deciding how and where to get started. In this episode, I talk about how I overcame this first major roadblock and was able to get my first investment property. I also talk about the realization that single-family investing wasn’t going to scale to meet my goals. I found a solution to this problem as well, but at first this solution just felt like another roadblock!

How my fiancé's dark humor led to a discovery that would eventually change the trajectory of our lives. In 2015 I was out of work, almost out of money, and I was seriously wondering if I’d ever get another paycheck from the oil and gas industry. I moved half-way across the country on three days’ notice and lived alone in a one-bedroom apartment in west Texas just to stay in the oil industry. The only piece of mail that I received in 6 months was an invitation to my own wedding with a note that read “Hope you can make it!”

This isn’t about real estate. This is about overcoming the problem we all face as oil and gas professionals. I discuss “The Oilman’s Prayer” and how generations of O&G professionals have simply rolled with the punches instead of taking an active stand against the volatility of our industry.
