The Hunt Fish Journal
The Hunt Fish Journal is a educational podcast hosted by Greg Barnhart, Dan Stapleton and Jerry Everhart with a passion for promoting archery, hunting and fishing in the great outdoors. Greg Barnhart is a custom wood worker with a great love of the outdoors, hunting and fishing. Greg started shooting archery around 14 years of age and was fascinated with the flight of the arrow from his youth. Greg started Deer hunting in 1978 in the Wayne National Forest in Southern Ohio. Greg is an avid Bass fisherman who has waded the Stillwater, Mad, Little Miami and the Great Miami rivers as well as the Twin Creek. Fishing the reservoirs, rivers and lakes all over Ohio in his early years kindled a fire for Bass fishing that continues to this day. Dan Stapleton is the owner of Dan's Sport Shop in Camden, Ohio. Dan has over 35 years deer hunting experience, and is a Master Bowyer with over 25 years of experience. Dan has traveled to many destinations and fished for many species of fish. Dan's favorite is Crappie Fishing. Dan's Sport Shop is a full-line archery pro shop with indoor shooting lanes. Jerry Everhart is an accomplished deer and Turkey hunter and a great fisherman. Jerry’s experience in harvesting big bucks has been a passion of his for more than 40 years, taking more big bucks than the average hunter with his proven Scrape Methods during the rut. Welcome back to the Rut Roundup! This week we talk to Jason Plank from Pennsylvania on how his season went last fall. Jason discovered the Hunt Fish Journal 2 years ago and here's what he wrote,
"Hey Greg, Just wanted to update you since are last correspondence. I had incorporated scrapes and linking branches at two of my sites. They were not set up exactly as you guys teach and I didn't even have a stand or blind at one of my sites. The property is up for sale and I wasn't sure what was going to happen, so I didn't hang a stand. I did however stay out of there except for running the scrapes. This past weekend, I decided to hunt one of the stands in the afternoon I was sitting on the ground with a ghillie suit. I saw 1 doe about an hour before dark. The wind was swirling and she smelled something but didn't take off. She just walked down through the woods instead of staying on the trail. Then about 20 min. before last shooting light, this buck walked in with his nose to the ground. He hit the trail and headed to the second scrape I had set up. When he hit my opening, he gave me a 20 yd shot. Next year, I will have some stands set up with the method that you guys are teaching. I have not used mach scrapes a lot in the past, but do believe in them. I think thats what attracted me to your method."

In this show the HFJ talks about tactics for smallmouth bass. These wonderful bronze back fish are sought out all over the US and Canada, Smallmouth are found in the rivers and streams as well as the lakes and reservoirs, preferring clean clear water, rocky or sandy bottoms and cooler water temperatures. Curt Compton is a friend of Al and Ron Lindner of Lindner's Angling Edge. Curt is a knowledgeable fishermen with years of experience and was recommended to us by Ron Lindner during a conversation about crappie. In this show Curt gives insight on what to look for in temperatures, structure, lure type or bait, color and presentation. I feel that many fishermen are not as successful as they could be for lack of implementing the basics, and by that i mean, seeking out the correct temperatures, depth, bait and structure that the fish you seek prefers. In this show as in most shows we do on fishing, one of the most important things to look for is the temperature. Almost always in every fishing show, the first item of business is the temperature. Welcome to the first show of 2018! Winter Bass Fishing with Derrick Jennings. In this show you will hear Derrick discuss winter and early spring tactics for taking largemouth bass in cold water. Derrick has been fishing many years in the Northwest Ohio area and has learned that patience and and incredible slow retrieve, bumping along the drop offs can be extremely productive. In this show we head to Jerry's place in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to shoot a video on how to remove the Y-Bone from Northern Pike. There are some who will not keep the pike they catch because of the troublesome Y-Bones. Al Lindner returns to the HFJ to talk about fishing the extended heat wave experienced across a large part of the U.S. Fishing this period of the summer is usually abandoned for cooler activities indoors. This week we welcome V. Paul Reynolds editor of the North Woods Sporting Journal to the Hunt Fish Journal. Paul also writes a self-syndicated weekly outdoor column for a number of Maine newspapers and co-hosts a Sunday night radio program called "The Main Outdoor". Paul is a member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America and serves on the Board of Directors New England Outdoor Writers Association. Paul is an active outdoorsman who loves Maine's Great Outdoors. From 1994 to 1998 he was Director of Information & Education for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. We brought Paul Reynolds on the show to talk about the Great Outdoors of Maine, from fly fishing to moose hunting to its' well kept secret, the wild trout ponds and popular land locked salmon. If you ever wanted to know more about Maine and its' rich hunting and fishing heritage, this show will give you a glimpse of what's available in Maine.

Greg and Dan go over fake scrapes and Talk about fall tactics for late season crappies. Crappies can still be taken this time of year, you just need to locate them. I was out fishing over this last weekend (10-10-11) and caught a nice Crappie and 2 Large Mouth Bass in about 30 mins. the water is clear and it's a great time to be outside. The Colors here are great and the temperatures are still in the 60s and 70s making this the best time to get in on that last of the season fishing. We then turn our sights back to deer hunting with a look at how to make a fake scrape. Dan has practical sound advice on how to construct and maintain a successful scrape. This month, the long anticipated Rut season is near. Dan and Greg are excited to bring back Jerry Everhart to the Hunt Fish Journal. In this episode Jerry explains his method of calculating the prime days during the Pre Rut season to hunt the Big Bucks and how he goes about drawing them into the kill zone. Jerry began keeping detailed records of his hunts over 30 years ago with the goal in mind to find a method to determine what triggers the Big Bucks to start moving, making them vulnerable to the hunter. After seeing a photo of Jerry's bucks (large bucks) we wanted to get Jerry back on the show to explain his proven method for hunting the Big Bucks. This months show is a special show for Dan and Greg. It was September 30th one year ago that we started this podcast with the deer hunter in mind. Dan and Greg have enjoyed doing these podcasts over the last year. It all got started a couple of years back when Greg discovered a podcast about hunting in the Michigan U.P. This month Greg talks about wading the Stillwater River. Walking the rivers of Ohio for Smallmouth Bass is truly one of the best ways to catch this strong fighting, surface breaking, hook throwing, bronze back Bass thats well sought after by many an angler. Greg goes over some techniques that helped him and friends catch many smallmouth as well as many Rock-bass when the Smallmouth stop biting. Greg started walking the rivers and creeks of Ohio as a young man and covers lure presentation, areas where bass hang out and some areas of concern for river safety.Then Dan and Greg turn the show topic to hunting, interviewing Eric Campbell, a Butler County sheriff. Eric, along with his wife, started the Southern Ohio Sportsmen Club as a way for hunters to gain access to quality hunting land in multiple states.As private land has gotten harder for sportsmen to get permission to hunt on, Eric saw the need to help his fellow hunters. Our hats are off to Eric and his wife for such a great endeavor to give sportsmen, sportswomen and their children a place to enjoy this great sport.

This is HFJ No.6 Dan finishes the thoughts of the hunt story after letting us all hang by ending the story as he took aim on a eight or more point buck. Greg and Dan discuss the story and if it was real or fictional.
Greg moves to talk about a 10 point he took and how strong the emotions are when a hunter connects on a buck and how a good hunt can turn bad when coyotes get involved in the search for your deer.
Dan sets up an interview with Brian Stephens at DNR district 5 after the scoring of his buck. Dan also interviews all the different people involved with this scoring. Brian's buck is truly a magnificent trophy with a heavy set of antlers.

Crappie fishing is big in Ohio along with the king of fish, at least in my book, the Large Mouth Bass!!!
