What is “normal” in sexual development? Amy Lang, Parenting & Sexuality Educator, breaks it all down for us, providing strategies and resources to help make this conversation a basis for further open communication.

Lancy compares our parenting with other societies across time and around the world.

The most important quality I want for my kids during these difficult times is probably what you want: resilience. Our kids need the capacity to overcome hard times because we cannot (and would not want to) protect them from every single one of life’s difficulties. In this episode, I talk to author and psychologist Chris Willard about raising resilience.
Takeaways:
- The younger your child is, the more contagious your emotions are.
- The best practice for a kid in a meltdown is your mindfulness practice as a parent.
- Resilient kids have both a stable, loving adult and responsibility.
Dr. Christopher Willard (PsyD) has been practicing meditation for 20 years and has led hundreds of workshops around the world, with invitations to more than two dozen countries. He is the author of Child’s Mind (2010) Growing Up Mindful (2016) Raising Resilience (2017) and ten other books for parents, professionals, and children. He teaches at Harvard Medical School. On the personal side, he enjoys traveling, hiking, cooking, reading and writing, and being a father.

None of us knew how hard it was going to be as a parent; we mess up constantly. When we respond to ourselves with harsh criticism and judgment, we leave ourselves feeling helpless and incapable. Even though it can feel strange, the practice of self-compassion is essential to becoming a more mindful parent. My guest today is Dr. Susan M. Pollak, author of Self-Compassion for Parents.
Takeaways:
- We can tolerate failure better and have more resilience with self-compassion.
- 95% of us grow up with imperfect parents.
- “If you lose it, you can use it.”
Susan M. Pollak, MTS, EdD, is a longtime student of meditation and yoga who has been integrating the practices of meditation into psychotherapy since the 1980s. Dr. Pollak is co-founder and teacher at the Center for Mindfulness and Compassion at Harvard Medical School/Cambridge Health Alliance. She is the author of the new book, Self-Compassion for Parents: Nurture Your Child by Caring for Yourself.

So many of us are concerned about what will happen (or not happen) with school this fall. Is it safe? What will the schedule be like? The only thing certain is that it will be different. Perhaps we need to broaden our definition of what it means to do school. Perhaps learning could travel outdoors? I talk to Megan Fitzgerald, co-founder of Tinkergarten, about how to support kids best in these times.
Takeaways:
- Outdoors is a safer place for kids to be social and learn right now.
- We can set up our home environments to optimize independent play.
- We can teach kids to manage risks playfully.
Meghan Fitzgerald alongside her husband, Brian founded Tinkergarten. Meghan previously worked as an Elementary School Principal and teacher as well as a Math/Science Specialist.

40-50% of couples will get divorced. How can we do it better? Loss of a relationship can be a major trauma, and when you add kids into the mix and co-parenting with your ex… well, there’s just a lot to work out there. How does one separate, be mindful of your kids, and be true to your own values? Radhika Lakhani, a divorce attorney and mindfulness teacher, talks to us about a new path forward.

Takeaways:
- Little kids can understand the concepts of racism and fairness.

- Start with questions: “Why do you think that might happen?”
Ann Hazzard, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist, formerly on the faculty at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. She is a co-author of Something Happened in Our Town: A Child's Story about Racial Injustice (Magination Press, 2018).

Since the #MeToo movement and growing feminism, we’ve been very interested in how to empower women. But what about the other half of the population? We, as parents, need to take a look at how we are raising our boys to either be complicit in the “locker room mentality,” or to take a stand against it.
Takeaways:
- The “lockerroom mindset” hurts everybody. Men give up part of their humanity.
- Boys want to know what it takes to be a man.
- We need to talk to boys. They take our silence as approval of the status quo.
Dave Willis, author of Raising Boys Who Respect Girls, spent thirteen years as a full-time pastor and is now a speaker, author, relationship coach, and television host for MarriageToday. They have four young sons and live in Keller, Texas.

Many of us are living with anxiety during the life disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. But some fear is healthy and some is not. It’s smart for us to stay home, wash our hands (a LOT), and boost our immune systems, but what about when fear leads us to obsess? I invited Iyanla Vanzant, author, and star of “Iyanla: Fix My Life,” back to the Mindful Mama podcast to talk about how to take care of fear.
Takeaways:
- Ego wants to separate us and make us feel alone in our heads.
- We can choose to experience this time from fear or power.
- We are interconnected and your self-care matters.
Iyanla Vanzant is the host and Executive Producer of OWN’s acclaimed and award-winning series, “Iyanla: Fix My Life.” Iyanla’s body of work spans over three decades and includes 18 published books, six New York Times best-sellers CDs, television, radio, and stage performances. Her most recent book is Get Over It! Thought Therapy for Healing the Hard Stuff.

Hunter talks to Kristen Race about Mindful Family Living.
Stress these days is an epidemic for families—parents and kids. How do we build up resiliency to stress from BOTH the inside-out and the outside-in? In this episode, I talk to Kristen Race, the author of Mindful Parenting, about how we can make small shifts to make profound changes.
Some big takeaways from this episode include:
1. Setting up an ideal life from the outside doesn’t work. Resilience has to come from within
2. Our stress as parents is contagious— it leads to stressed out kids
3. We can mentally create more space in our days
Dr. Kristen Race is the founder of Mindful Life™ and author of Mindful Parenting. Her programs are rooted in neuroscience and help adults and children build resilience to modern-day stress. She has trained over 40,000 leaders in her methods worldwide.
