#32: Tools for Self-Compassion with Dr. Kristin Neff
52 perc 2. évad 32. rész Mary Jelkovsky

In this episode, Mary interviews the pioneer of self-compassion research: Dr. Kristin Neff. Although our society puts much focus on building self-esteem, Dr. Kristin explains why self-compassion is a much more useful and impactful place to focus on. From soothing symptoms of depression and anxiety to helping us be kinder to others, self-compassion is key to greater well-being, especially for women. Dr. Kristin generously shares tips and tools that will help you be kinder to yourself during difficult times.

In addition to writing numerous academic articles and book chapters on self-compassion, Dr. Kristin is author of the book Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself. She received her doctorate from UC Berkeley, studying moral development and then did 2 years of postdoctoral study at the University of Denver studying self-concept development. During Kristin’s last year of graduate school she became interested in Buddhism and has been practicing meditation ever since. While doing her post-doctoral work she decided to conduct research on self-compassion – a central construct in Buddhist psychology and one that had not yet been examined empirically until Dr. Kristin created a scale to measure the concept. Dr. Kristin is currently an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin.

In conjunction with her colleague Dr. Chris Germer, she has developed a training program called Mindful Self-Compassion, which is taught by thousands of teachers worldwide. They co-authored The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook as well as Teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion Program: A Guide for Professionals.

#20: A Meditation for Self-Love
21 perc 1. évad 20. rész Mary Jelkovsky

In this episode, Mary shares a Buddhist self-love meditation that will help you feel more at peace with yourself. This practice is especially helpful to those who identify as empaths because us empaths pick up on other people's emotions and often try to help them at the expense of ourselves. Instead, Mary wants you to focus on stepping into a higher frequency of self-love so that you can help others without sacrificing yourself. Do this meditation anytime you're feeling sad, overwhelmed, or when you need a self-love pick-me-up.

Mary also touches on anti-racism and the importance of fighting for human rights. This self-love meditation will help you fight for causes you believe in and help the communities in need from a place of unconditional love.

Okay I am seriously freaking out (in a good way) about this episode because you know that book I keep recommending to you called “Beauty Sick”??? In this episode, Mary is joined by her dear friend Jessi (@jessijeannn on Instagram) who talks about food freedom, intuitive eating, and healing from body-image struggles. Jessi’s story starts in high school when like many young women, she started restrictive dieting. The exhaustion of dieting, over exercising, and depriving her body nearly killed her.

After being on a healing journey of 10 years, Jessi became a Certified Eating Psychology coach and created the Food Freedom Online Program which helps women heal their relationship with food and their body.

In this podcast, Jessi talks about her daily morning routine which has helped her and hundreds of women stop binge eating by reprogramming the neural pathways in their brain and forming new habits around eating. She also gives tactical advice for conquering binge eating, eating intuitively, and building positive body-image.

#4: 22 Things I Learned in 22 Years
54 perc 1. évad 4. rész Mary Jelkovsky

This is the birthday episode!! Mary shares with you life lessons she had to learn the hard way in her past 22 years on this earth. She talks about everything from sex, hair removal, and yeast infections, to divorce and relationships, to self love and body image.

Here are a few of her favorite lessons…

  1. You’re not everyone’s cup of tea, nor should you strive to be. There’ll always be people who won’t like you no matter what you do.
  2. Hating yourself will not make you happy. Criticizing your body will not make you look better. Shame will not make you feel worthy. Self-love is the way.
  3. Hair removal is overrated.
  4. Your body’s only purpose is to keep you alive. Be kind to it.

#2: How to Fall in Love with Yourself
33 perc 1. évad 2. rész Mary Jelkovsky

“We often think of self love as a noun…” a thing we want more of. “In reality, love is a verb…” something inside of us and something that we do; not something we possess. In this episode, Mary talks about the paradox of thinking that if we only have more things to do what we want to do then we can achieve self love. “If you want to have self love, start with the be.” We also hear more about Mary’s personal journey with body image and take a look at how it has affected her relationships in the past, from judging others to how it affected her sex life. Mary also discusses the importance of romanticizing your own life and what that could possibly look like for you. Take a moment to brew a warm cup of tea and enjoy the show!
