Recognise: LSDXOXO
61 perc 53. rész DJ Mag

New York’s purveyor of mutant club sounds, LSDXOXO.

A rare artist in the current electronic music landscape, LSDXOXO has built a fervid following whilst making music entirely on his own terms. Although he’s been putting productions out under the name since 2014, this year’s ‘Body Mods’ introduced an urgent brand of mutant Baltimore club music which, although inspired by the genre, comes off as anything but pastiche.

Across its seven chopped and skewed sample-heavy tracks – which range from 130bpm to 160bpm and span sounds taken from Baltimore club music, as well as ghettotech, hardcore, footwork and more in their frenzied 30-minute assault – ‘Body Mods’ introduces the strongest release from a producer whose artist bio describes him as “deliciously confrontational".

For his Recognise mix, LSDXOXO has delivered a more linear sound than much that has come before from him, showcasing another side to his dexterity as a DJ/producer. All cut with references from pop culture, the ferociously propulsive mix ranges from rhythmic, percussive techno built on rolling kicks, through thunderous peak-time techno into jacking machine music built for the basement.

Recognise: Jensen Interceptor
59 perc 50. rész DJ Mag

Australia’s foremost purveyor of weaponized electro, Jensen Interceptor.

One of the brightest lights on the booming electro scene that’s seen a renaissance in the recent years, he first piqued the interest of DJs from Helena Hauff to Maceo Plex through releases on Boysnoize Records, Motorik! and Sheffield’s Central Processing Unit in recent years with his devastating brand of floor-focused electro, which ranged from mechanical electro-funk to mutant ghettotech.

2018 has since been a particularly prolific year for him as a producer. Real name Mikey Melas, he’s dropped no less than seven EPs, on labels including E-Beamz, Cultivated Electronics and Power Station, with productions built on a maturing of his distinctive sound.

The end of the year also sees Melas put out his debut album on Maceo Plex’s Lone Romantic. Featuring collaborations with DeFekT, The Hacker and long-term collaborator Assembler Code, the ten-track LP is an ode to his mum, titled ‘Mother’.

The result has seen him spin a string of huge shows including a semi-residency at Amnesia Ibiza’s Pyramid, as well as sets at BPM Portugal, Sonus, Awakenings Festival and Dockyard, as well as the inaugural Drumcode Festival.

Podcast 079: Eli Escobar
79 perc 3. rész DJ Mag

Eli Escobar has been at the heart of New York’s club scene for over two decades now. Born and raised in the city, the DJ/producer has been consistently inspired by the cultural diversity that surrounded him growing up in the 80s and the many ways it manifested itself musically in those pre-MTV years.

You can hear it in the dynamic and stylistic range of his ever-exciting DJ sets, which veer from soulful disco and jazzy, propulsive house into realms of reggaeton, soul, hip hop, funk, Afrobeat and beyond. A professional DJ since 1997, Escobar has since held residencies in clubs such as Le Bain and Tiki Disco as well as garnering quite the international reputation through extensive touring.

This mix is the perfect summation of Mr. Escobar’s DJing expertise and tact, being a literal excerpt from a recent set played at Good Room in Brooklyn where he played for six hours while fellow New Yorker Danny Krivit played in the other room.

His Hold Youth project with close friend and b2b partner, Seuil, had a huge 2017 too, with the pair spinning together under the name at Rex Club in Paris, Gottwood and [ipsə] in Berlin, amongst many others.

Le Loup’s DJ Mag Podcast was recorded live from his show at Terminal Club in Lyon earlier this month. Listen to it above and read his Q&A on djmag.com.

Since forming, the Berlin collective have put out music by Curses, Mondowski, K-Effect, Cannibal Ink, Perel, Dawn Again and more on a series of various artists releases. They bring together artists from around the world who share roots in post-punk, wave, and other weirdo guitar music, mixing it with Italo, the darker side of disco and electro.
