The Beauty of Conflict with Clair Canfield
102 perc 3. évad 117. rész Find The Magic

When most of us think of our experiences with conflict in communication, we feel emotions ranging from mild discomfort to full fledged panic or dread. In this episode,  we explore our approach to conflict with Clair Canfield, a brilliant professor on the subject of communication. He models what he teaches throughout this conversation and he offers us amazing tools to help us improve our relationships by holding space for others and changing our lens about what it means to connect with others. Clair's pillars of communication are nothing short of groundbreaking. and have changed our approach forever. Here they are:

1. Belief in the capacity to change

2. Belief in self determination ((people have the right and ability to choose. Advice giving is counterintuitive)

3. Everyone has dignity

4. Safety- do not cause harm

5. Ethic of care (benevolence)

HOW TO Reconnect with Life, Your Marriage and Your Kids / Deep Dive into Connection
46 perc 3. évad 117. rész Find The Magic
Connection is a foundational pillar of our parenting philosophy on Find the Magic along with boundaries, unconditional love and presence; we view connection as the vital, healing salve that can repair wounds and refill our empty buckets. In today's episode, we break down how we can connect with our kids, ourselves, and our spouse.  Filling our own bucket first allows us to connect with others. We offer some of our favorite tips for reconnecting with yourself and specifically how reconnecting with our bodies can remedy feelings of burnout and exhaustion. How gratitude offers us strength through trying times and realizing that we are connected with those who came before us can bring perspective.  We dive deep into the traditional differences in need between males and females and how need for affection can collide with a need for sexual connection.  We wrap up with gentle reminders of how we may be distracted in our parenting and guide you in ways you can find little moments sprinkled in your day where you can take advantage of connecting with your kids (even in discipline!**).  Books that inspired this episode His Needs Her Needs // Willard F Harley Jr Elevated Childcare // Janet Lansbury Our Related Episodes: Parenting with Unconditional Love  How to Embrace Childhood  Putting Connection First  Holding Boundaries / Discipline Pt. 1 We would love for you to share our episode with your friends and family. How To Tame Your Parenting Triggers with Jen Lumalan of Your Parenting Mojo
47 perc 3. évad 113. rész Find The Magic

Being reactive and angry in our parenting is a feeling that weighs on many of us. There are times when your child does things that all children do like: expressing uncomfortable emotions, making big messes, wasting food, screaming/shouting LOUDLY, stalling endlessly while getting dressed, leaving the house, or getting ready for bed...and we lose our cool.

As we embark on this journey of authenticity and finding ourselves inside parenting, the anxiety of failing to respond in a way that is honoring to our kids and ourselves can threaten to break us. We often find ourselves trying to change our children, looking for strategies that will guide us in how we can get them to do or not do something. In this episode with Jen Lumalan of Your Parenting Mojo Podcast, Felica and Jen have a wide ranging conversation about how we can flip that perception and recognize our childhood trauma and how nurturing ourselves can help us better nurture our children. They flesh out common parenting triggers like respect and defiance and how we can recognize when our patience skin is worn thin! In that recognition, we can give ourselves grace and space between the trigger and our response to our children. A space where trust is created inside our relationship, where our child trusts that our response will be connecting and loving. We have all experienced circumstances that weaken our ability to respond to our kids with love and respect. Hopefully this episode will offer your resource, encouragement and insight into how you can see those triggers and soften the effect they have on your relationships.

Jen is offering a course for parents who would like more training on recognizing and taming our triggers. The course can be found here: https://yourparentingmojo.com/tamingyourtriggers/

We dive into a wide range of listener questions today! We start by exploring what the solitude of 2020 brought into our life, how to come to peace with our inner landscape and find connection where we can. We spend time on a deep dive into one of our most asked questions, dealing with our kids aggression and when they hurt other kids. We can remain calm, lean into emotions AND not become attached and let their emotions control ours. Our children's lives are intimately entwined in ours; this reveals itself in our third listener question about dealing with situations when our kids won't tell us their secret feelings or share their emotions. And finally we explore friendships in mothers, types of friends we need and how to deal with the loss of friendship that is no longer serving you or your child.

“Feelings are for feeling. All of them. Even the hard ones.” Glennon Doyle

This is our 100th episode! In this landmark episode, we explore what it means to step into our own power. There are lots of things we are told as we grow throughout childhood and into adulthood. Many of those things are wonderful and they serve us in creating a life that is true and beautiful. However, there are also things that we learn that simply don’t serve us. One of the joyful realities of adulthood is that we actually have the power to identify what we have learned and CHOOSE which things are true and beautiful, and which are not for us.

We discuss the work of Glennon Doyle in her new book, Untamed, and discuss the deep topics that she brings up. She challenges the way we look at ourselves, and truly helps us see what dialogues we are having with ourselves because of society’s pressures, and walks us through how to authentically connect with who we truly are. We cover topics like how we cannot selectively numb our feelings; to lean into one, you must learn to lean into them all.

How to Own Your Desires & the Art of Intimacy with Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife
34 perc 2. évad 99. rész Find The Magic

Physical intimacy is an important aspect of our lives, and yet it is also an area that for many people, can be a space that is complicated, difficult, and even emotionally or physically unpleasant. In this episode, we have a conversation with Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife, a relationship and sexuality educator and coach, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, with a Ph.D in Counseling Psychology.

In this conversation, we discussed this important topic and specifically address how you as a woman can own your own desire in a positive and empowering way. We address how developing yourself as a whole person, making room for yourself, and belonging to your own desires instead of only belonging to others and sacrificing yourself for their desires and needs are all key components to owning your own sexuality (and your own life).

Intimacy takes courage. It means you are willing to be knowable--even the flaws and the scary parts. Sexuality is just a part of intimacy, and Dr. Finlayson-Fife beautifully addresses how we can bring our full selves unapologetically to our partners, and as we learn to do that, we can learn to fully bring ourselves unapologetically to the world. We can show up as a whole, flawed and glorious person in our own lives. As we acknowledge and validate our own desires, we are able to own them. Dr. Finlayson-Fife’s words are both empowering and inspiring.

Seeing Ourselves Clearly in the Role of Mother
48 perc 2. évad 97. rész Find The Magic

Society has often put the role of motherhood either on a pedestal or in a cage, and both are small spaces from which to thrive. Few roles combine such responsibility and power with such possibility for shame and unhelpful pressure. Because of this, the topic of seeing our own role as mother clearly and with curiosity is an important one.

Something that every single one of us have in common is the fact that we have a mother. Some of us know our mothers, while some of us have never met her. Our relationship with our mother might be simple, joyful, complicated, toxic, or countless adjectives in between. Every situation is different, and regardless of what that relationship looks like, we can find wisdom as we address that relationship.

In this episode, we discuss the fascinating work of Harriet Lerner and explore how it is possible to learn from the things our own mothers did or didn’t do with a combination of both clarity and grace. According to Lerner, addressing that relationship in our own mind and heart is something that is helpful to us as we approach our life and our own parenting. As we gain clarity with this relationship, we are able to see ourselves more clearly and truly learn to find the magic that we can access in this powerful role.

Creating Roots Through Family Traditions
48 perc 2. évad 96. rész Find The Magic

The holiday season can feel overwhelming because we feel the need to do everything to make them exciting and special. However, the beauty of having our own families is that we can intentionally choose the holiday activities that serve us and let go of the ones that don’t. The magic of family traditions is that they help our children feel a sense of belonging and gives them roots, which helps them identify with the connection of the family instead of peer groups and can help with their behavior.

In this episode, we share the traditions that serve us with simplicity and joy and give you many options to try with your own family. We talk about how sometimes all it takes is to recognize the traditions we already have and capitalize on naming them and making them reoccurring and special.

From Halloween fun, ways to be grateful in November and loads of Christmas and winter traditions we hope that this episode inspires you to create new memories with your family and recognize your current traditions to turn them into magical ones that repeat every year!

A good night’s sleep is an elusive goal we simply dream about but rarely attain. We all know the benefits of quality sleep for us and our children, but we find ourselves at a loss for how to improve it. In this episode, we have a fascinating conversation with Andy Mant, founder of Blublox glasses. He shares loads of helpful research regarding how the light we expose ourselves to throughout the day and especially in the hours after the sun goes down impacts our sleep quality and overall health, including our brain focus power and maintaining a healthy weight. With only a few simple changes in our habits surrounding light, we can quickly reset our circadian rhythms to a healthy pattern.

He addresses how this light hygiene affects babies’ sleep cycles, children’s learning and behaviour, and even fertility. Let Your Phone Be Your Tool Instead of Your Master: Screen Time Tips and Boundaries for Real Life
70 perc 2. évad 92. rész Find The Magic

Most of us know that we could use a little less screen time in our lives and the lives of our kids. However, sometimes it can feel overwhelming to know exactly where to start when attempting to set boundaries and help our families become less dependent on entertaining technology to get us through the day. After a particularly inspiring conversation with Collin Kartcher a few weeks ago (see link below to listen), we have, in this episode, taken the conversation even deeper and walk through how to apply the principles in real life. We discuss how screen boundaries have worked in our own homes with hacks and tips that we have found to be immensely helpful in keeping technology in the place of a useful tool instead of the master it has become in so many of our lives. We address not only how to find freedom from technology, but how to also foster the antidote to this dependence: connection with real humans, in real life.

Want to motivate yourself a bit more? Try plugging in your own daily screen time into the following equation. Pull out your phone, check your daily screen time (or, look at your daily social media time, or gaming time--whatever you feel like is just kind of fluff screen time). Then plug in that number of hours into this equation:

Daily Screen time X 365 (days in the year) X 50 (years) divided by 5,840 (awake hours a year, if you sleep 8 yours a night) = the amount of years of your life you will spend looking at your phone if you do the same amount for 50. (For people who average 5 hours per day, it is around 15 years total!)

Motivation? Found. Your welcome:)

How Meditation Can Save Your Life With Brooke Snow
58 perc 2. évad 91. rész Find The Magic

Small daily practices often compound into large scale change in our lives. As parents we tell ourselves we "don't have time". Our conversation with Brooke Snow today with challenge that belief. Of all the life changing habits in the world, meditation is right at the top of the list for us at Find the Magic. In this episode, we have an inspiring conversation with author, meditation instructor and advocate Brooke Snow. We also discuss how meditation can help improve all aspects of your life, from your ability to parent with patience, to your ability to handle what life throws at you.

Brooke initially discovered the life-saving power of meditation unintentionally while struggling to breathe with blood clots in her lungs in a life-flight helicopter. It wasn’t until later, while living with the PTSD (that can accompany near death experiences) and simultaneously raising her young children, that she truly began to understand what meditation could do.

Brooke gives us some wonderful tips on how to incorporate visualization into our practice, as well as how to use the floors and ceilings technique to truly dial in meditation as an easy non-negotiable habit.

Systems and Values for Easing Daily Burdens and Strengthening Family Connections

Have you ever driven in a city that isn’t well planned? The roads are often too narrow for the amount of traffic, and the flow of streets seem to have no discernible pattern. Navigating in such a place can be tricky and chaotic. In contrast, a city that has planned  ahead of time what they want long term often has wide, orderly streets, and the initial time and thought investment pays back tenfold as their city runs much smoother as it grows. In this episode, we talk about using this theory of infrastructure in our own families. It takes some time upfront, but in the long run, it makes our family run sooo much more smoothly and makes parenting easier, while intentionally aligning it with our values.

We discuss the systems that we have tried out in our own homes over the years that have proven themselves to be priceless.

Saving Our Kids & Ourselves from Screens & Social Media with Collin Kartchner
73 perc 2. évad 89. rész Find The Magic
Collin Kartchner is a social activist and champion of giving childhood back to our children. The research is coming in fast about the giant social experiment of putting the pocket-sized computers into the hands of young children and teens, and the results are…alarming, to say the least. Collin helps us to understand the direness of the situation concerning kids and their internet consumption, specifically social media and online gaming. These platforms are designed specifically to give our minds dopamine hits providing the false sense of connection that kids are craving. This can create a vacuum in their minds that may lead to depression and lack of connection to people around them. Although this information at first paints a bleak picture for childhood, we discuss the beautiful antidote that is at all of our fingertips: connection. REAL connection with actual humans in our lives.  Collin offers concrete advice about trying out a family screen detox, and gives us lots of inspiring suggestions on how to increase the connection in our own home with the people we love. He will truly inspire you to make a difference in your child’s life (and model freedom from screen dependence yourself!  You can learn more about Collin’s work on his instagram page.   Books We Mentioned Glow Kids: How Screen Addiction is Hijacking our Kids—and How to Break the Trance // Nicholas Kardaras  Good Pictures Bad Pictures: Porn-Proofing Today’s Young Kids // Kristen A. The Art of Acceptance, Self Discovery, and Homeschooling with Erin Loechner
49 perc 2. évad 88. rész Find The Magic

In her book, Chasing Slow, Erin Loechner describes how sometimes, in our search for more, we add things to our lives. We buy more things, add more tasks, take on more. However, often, what we need is actually less. In this episode, she shares with us her insights on living with the lion inside of us, the one who always is whispering to us that we must do more, have more, BE more. What do we do with this voice when we are different phases of life? Some phases require more stillness, and others have space for more goal reaching, and there is beauty in all of these phases.

This embracing of each phase of life that Erin embodies led her to search for and then create, along with child development professionals and educators, a beautiful homeschool curriculum called Other Goose. It is built on these three pillars of education: connection through nature, community through stories, creativity through play. It offers flexibility to parents of younger children and is a wonderful resource for any of you out there who are considering homeschooling this year.

Erin Loechner has been an online educator, homeschool advocate, and author for over 10 years.  Her all-in-one homeschooling plan for the early years, Other Goose, has been used by over 25,000 students worldwide, and includes daily literature, creativity, foundations, outdoors, relationships, language, math, rhythms, logic, and habit lessons for kids ages 2-7.

We discuss how to both acknowledge parental emotions and needs and your child's emotions/needs and meet in the middle in a peaceful place.

In these discussions, we give a breakdown of our favorite tips on discipline as well and how to create an environment of teaching over punishment and reward. So many of us are facing a big decision this Fall, will we be teaching our kids at home? Or maybe we have no choice at all. So many of us are being thrown into the role as teacher and parent. This week Felica is interviewing Jen Lumanlan of Your Parenting Mojo. Jen Lumanlan holds an M.S. in Psychology (Child Development) and an M.Ed., and hosts the Your Parenting Mojo podcast which is a reference guide for parents of toddlers and preschoolers based on scientific researchers and the principles of respectful parenting.  In each episode she examines a topic related to parenting and child development from all sides to help parents understand how to make decisions about raising their children.  She lives in California with her husband and daughter. Jen brings us wisdom backed with immense research (her specialty!) on why we should trust our ability to teach, our child’s ability to learn (and lead their own education through their own interests!) and the process of homeschooling.

We touch on why we can let go of the perfect curriculum, standardized tests, and we discuss the value of play in education, socialization and explore the concept of pandemic pods. We hope that this wide ranging conversation helps any of you choosing (or maybe without the choice) about your child’s education this Fall feel more confident.

How GOOD Apologies Change Every Relationship (Even the one with ourselves)
39 perc 2. évad 84. rész Find The Magic

We ALL make mistakes. Every single one of us. Sometimes, even with the best of intentions, we hurt people. Although many of us are over apologizers for unnecessary things, we often become non-apologizers when it comes time to truly say we are sorry. We buffer it with defensiveness or ego, and our attempts at apologies fall flat. Our relationships suffer when this happens.

In this episode, we address how over apologizing is unhelpful and give tips on how to avoid it, and then we delve deep into what makes a true apology, and how to get out of the way of our ego enough to truly make amends in our relationships.

This topic is so beautiful because it really gives us space in our relationships to admit when we do wrong, listen without defensiveness, and truly heal.

In this special episode, we welcome a new host onto our show! Katelin is Taralyn’s sister and Felica’s sister-in-law, and we are so excited for you all to get to know her better.

For many of us, this is a time when our current reality does not match our expectation of it. Even without a pandemic, sometimes our career, our relationships, or our health doesn’t line up with what we think it should be. In this episode, we talk about the wisdom from authors that we are personally leaning on during this time, and which books are really helping us the most.

We have found comfort in the wisdom that has transcended time from the philosophers of the past such as Socrates and Plato, and modern thought leaders such as Ryan Holiday and Eckhart Tolle. As we talk about these different philosophies, we explore the idea that when we feel like we are losing ourselves because the outer circumstances that we have learned to define ourselves with change or disappear all together, it is actually an opportunity to truly find ourselves. We are more than our circumstances; we are not our thoughts. It is a quite liberating realization!

The Power Of Beautiful Words

Hey everyone! It’s Taralyn today. It’s no secret that I LOVE words. I love talking; I love writing; I love reading. I feel so much of who I am and how I think is a result of the ideas and philosophies I have read or heard over the years.  Words have the power to change the world! I have found that memorizing beautiful words from the masters who have come before me to be a powerful way to have those ideas at my fingertips when the need arises. I have also been pleasantly surprised at how fun it has been to introduce my kids to poetry and great literature and how easy it is to have them memorize these words.

In this episode, I talk about different categories of words that my kids and I memorize: historical documents, poetry, inspiring leader quotes, and scripture. I explain the benefits of such a practice, and give you lots of easy tips and tricks to have you easily incorporate some literature love into your parenting.

Four Pillars of Wholehearted Parenting We Apply to Any Problem

With all the change and emotional upheaval of the last few months, it is easy to feel a bit unmoored. In this episode, we take a nice big breath and go back to what we know for sure—our core pillars of wholehearted parenting.

Whenever we find ourselves having specific issue with one of our children (or any relationships for that matter!), or we are feeling a bit overwhelmed with any aspect of life, we find ourselves returning back to these four basic pillars over and over, and they have served us well.

Our foundational recipe is connection, unconditional love, being present, and setting healthy boundaries. We have found these to be not only crucial and useful, but liberating. HOW TO Express Your Needs and Solve Problems with Nonviolent Communication
54 perc 2. évad 76. rész Find The Magic

Communication is always an important space, and now more than ever, we are loving the communication philosophy developed by Marshall Rosenberg called Non-Violent Communication (NVC). The ground breaking assumption of NVC is that ALL human beings have the ability to connect with each other and have needs, and that our needs don’t conflict, but it is simply our strategies for meeting those needs that create problems. These conflicting strategies are what lead to violence or causing harm to each other. This is deep, powerful philosophy that can change the way each of us interact. Whether you are talking to your children, your spouse, your neighbor, your boss or those across cultural lines using appropriate and clean communication tactics will open doors and hearts.

The steps to nonviolent communication involve observing, describing emotion, identifying needs, making specific requests, and clarifying understanding. If there ever was a time for this clarification, it is now. We hope you find it helpful in all important relationships in your lives.

We recorded this episode before the history-making events of the last week surrounding civil rights here in the United States, so although we don’t apply the principles directly to this subject, we look forward to hearing how you apply the concepts in whatever you are currently facing.

To Raise Strong Children We Need to Be Strong Parents
66 perc 2. évad 72. rész Find The Magic

For many parents, it can be difficult to respectfully parent while still holding strong boundaries. However, sometimes, as we try to avoid being an authoritarian tyrant, we go too far the other way and become permissive lambs without boundaries and our children are left with too much power, which in turn makes them feel unanchored and insecure.

In the last few decades, our society has witnessed an upswing in number of children who are, diagnosed or not, dealing with many behavior difficulties. Joe Newman, author of Raising Lions, has spent his career helping these children. He has found a pattern that has helped countless parents and teachers find that balance between being an authoritarian parent and an overly permissive parent.

While his book is geared towards dealing with children with mild to severe behavior problems, we have found his tools to be unbelievably helpful as parents to all children.

Feeling Burned Out? How We Can Use Healthy Treats to Take Care of Ourselves
51 perc 2. évad 61. rész Find The Magic

Does anyone else out there find yourself reaching for an entire box of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (insert your kryptonite here) when you are feeling the big feelings that most of us are experiencing on a daily basis? During times of high emotions, boredom, and overwhelm, we have found ourselves grasping for something to hold on to. In this time, we have found that Gretchin Rubin’s strategy of using healthy treats to care for ourselves has been truly a life saver.

Most of us love the idea of good habits in our lives. In her book, Better Than Before, Rubin describes a strategy of using healthy treats to care for ourselves, which actually increases our ability of keep good habits in our lives. When we deprive ourselves of things that we look forward to and bring us pleasure, we can end up feeling depleted and burned out. This often leads us to abandon our good habit pursuits and can lead us to un-healthy treats or numbing (which can bring us pleasure momentarily, but often derail our long term goals and habits).

Healthy treats are so wonderful because they are things that both make you feel good in the moment, and feel good after you are finished with them. On the other hand, unhealthy treats are enjoyable in the moment you indulge in them, but often make us feel worse later (think eating an entire chocolate cake to escape feeling a negative emotion, skipping your workout to mindlessly scroll YouTube, over drinking, or any addictive behavior that you feel sabotages your wellbeing).

In this episode, we discuss how to really use the strategy of healthy treats as a fun way to give more to yourself, which in turn allows you to actually stick with your goals and habits. We give our lists of healthy treats so that hopefully you leave the episode with a long list of your own healthy treats you can lean on throughout the day to help you feel both taken care of and motivated.

The Martyr Effect. HOW TO Stop Offering Ourselves at the Alter of Parenting
70 perc 2. évad 69. rész Find The Magic

This is a time of self reflection, a slow down presented to us by COVID-19. It isn’t ideal; however,  ultimately, it has the potential to lead to a new level of self awareness. Finding your true self and acknowledging who you are fully can be scary and can challenge some of the long engrained thought patterns we all have. GUILT if we want more than caring for children at home. LONGING for something outside of our “good life” when we should be content with that good.

Do you find yourself offering yourself at the alter of parenting? Were you shown examples of martyrdom that were praised as being a “good mother or father?” Conversations we have heard have inspired us to explore this joust between care of others and care of ourself. How can we find the dance that will inspire our own happiness and acknowledge the happiness that caring for others brings? How can we respect those we love while holding a space of respect for ourselves?

What to Do When Sibling Tension Rises / Deep Dive into Sibling Rivalry
69 perc 2. évad 67. rész Find The Magic

Do any of you have children who seem to turn up the squabbling and fighting when they are in close quarters? With schools being cancelled throughout the world, many families are finding themselves with all their children home under one roof all day, and although that presents us with many opportunities, it also has many parents pulling out their hair as their children seem to take sibling rivalry to new heights. In this episode, we address the questions that many of you have asked about how to navigate the concept of siblings fighting. We give tips on how to successfully implement quiet time (which is a life saver during quarantine time!), and how to help your children use this unique situation as a time to help strengthen their connection with each other and with you instead of reeking havoc on their interpersonal relationships and causing the temporary insanity of their parents. You can do this!

Finding Compassion in the Current Chaos
45 perc 2. évad 65. rész Find The Magic
Wow world! As we live this beautiful life alongside the current events of our world (you know, like the pandemic we have happening), we have a really wonderful opportunity to deepen our compassion practice to help make the world, and inside our own hearts, a better place. We discovered the power of a practice called Tonglen from Pema Chödrön’s book, When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times, and we have LOVED incorporating it into our lives! It is a practice that helps you process negative emotion (anyone feeling any of those right now?:) in an amazingly loving way. In this episode, we walk you through the practice, and share how we have found it helpful in our own lives. When it is often so challenging to melt together compassion and kindness that we feel personally into the anxiety of every day. It is so powerful, and we hope you love it as much as we did. When You Feel Like You’re Failing
46 perc 2. évad 64. rész Find The Magic

Sometimes in life, but especially in parenting, we just feel like we don’t measure up—at all. We can end up feeling like we are failing at one of the most important things we have ever done, and it is disheartening, to say the least. This episode is for all you parents out there who, at the end of some days, have worried that you aren’t enough as you wrap yourselves in blankets of worry and overwhelm.

In a world full of beautiful and helpful (and also some not so great) advice, with countless books on every subject, it is possible to sometimes have our efforts to become better parents simply feel too hard, too much.

In this episode, we use one of our listener’s example of having a toddler not behaving (hitting, in this case) to explore the path that leads to parent shame, and how we can turn away from that path and find inspiration and peace instead.

Guidance for the Changing Seasons of Motherhood
45 perc 2. évad 62. rész Find The Magic
Many of us often hear the well meant advice to “enjoy every single second because it all goes by so fast!” Although there is so much wisdom in this advice, sometimes it makes us feel guilty when we are in moments that seem at best a drudgery and others that are downright miserable. This episode we hear a listener question about what do when our dreams seem to be deferred while we are in certain seasons of life. Parenting young children is a season that seems to be fraught with many of these dilemmas and questions. In this episode, we address these questions and talk about how to incubate and still develop our dreams WHILE we slow down in the caring for young children. Also, we talk about how to feel the moments of pain, allowing them to flow through us so we are also able to fully embrace the moments of rapture and fulfillment that also come. Both sides of this emotional spectrum are part of every season of life, and there is a courageous beauty to staying open to all that life brings. Parenting Boys Part 1
55 perc 2. évad 59. rész Find The Magic

This AMAZING time we live in offers so many opportunities for us and for our children. However, it also presents many unique challenges as well. Girls growing up now face specific difficulties, and boys do too. In this episode, we address some of the issues that accompany raising boys, and what we have seen in our sons’ lives. We also bring in a lot of great info from authors who have done far more research on the subject of boys.

We address issues like how to cultivate  respectful, strong, and kind boy by channeling his natural strengths (as opposed to simply suppressing all of their tendencies and making them feel like they are terrible all the time). We explore some fascinating psychology and hopefully help all of us raise boys who become men who are whole, respectful, humans who make this world a better place:).

In this mini episode, Taralyn guides us through the meditation we do every day. She was originally inspired by several different mediation teachers, and has adapted their techniques using other practices that people have used for thousands of years to what works well for her. After listening to this audio every day for a couple weeks, you’ll find that you can do the sequence on your own without any guidance. Anywhere you find yourself, you can do this practice. Here is the sequence for reference: Breathing (where your exhale is twice as a long as your inhale) -2 deep breaths with your fingertips pressing 2 inches below your belly button -2 deep breaths with your fingertips pressing over your heart -2 deep breaths with your fingertips pressing in the center of your forehead just above your eye Body mindfulness: Tap into what you are feeling, hearing, tasting, and smelling, and seeing Mantra Meditation: Focus on the word one, and come back to it when thoughts come Gratitude/manifestation: Think of something you’re grateful for, then feel gratitude for something you are hoping to manifest, and then detach from the outcome and be open to inspired action you can take to make it happen.  (I like to connect them—for example: if you want flat abs, 1) Feel gratitude about the core strength you have already, 2) feel the feeling of gratitude and whatever emotion you would feel with amazing flat abs, and then 3) detach from the outcome (realize your happiness isn’t dependent on it), and be open to whatever inspired action you can take). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/findthemagic/support

Thrive this Holiday Season, Instead of Just Survive
38 perc 1. évad 52. rész Find The Magic
The winter holidays can be a time of many opposites: joy and grief, magic and rushing, spirituality and materialism. Many of us put very high expectations on ourselves to somehow manage perfectly the practical aspects of this time of year (think gift planning and food making), create magical, cozy experiences for our children,  while still cultivating room for an appreciation for the spiritual side for this season. All of these expectations can be...a lot. Add onto this the fact that many people have personal griefs that they are mourning this time of year, and it’s no wonder that for many, this time of year is less a season of joy and hope, and more a season of simply “getting through” and surviving. Running a Household Without Resentment
50 perc 1. évad 51. rész Find The Magic

There is so much effort that goes into running family life. There are seemingly endless housekeeping tasks, time planning, relationship maintenance, spiritual, academic, and physical teaching of children, budgeting, providing for the family’s needs, etc. You get the picture—it’s a long list. Sometimes, because of a lack of communication between partners, it is easy to build resentment when one person feels like he or she is carrying most of the load. In this episode, we lay out a specific program created by Eve Rodsky in her book Fair Play that we have used in our homes to help increase communication about task breakdown and cut down on resentment.

This method is nice because it values both partners roles, takes into consideration the many different parenting/providing setups like 2 income households, one full time provider and one stay-at-home parent, and everything in between. It’s all about just finding what works for your family, and it is creates a framework for some really powerful dialogue between partners.

How To Rise Above Our Parenting Triggers
46 perc 1. évad 47. rész Find The Magic

Throughout our lives, we often find ourselves being triggered emotionally by other people’s actions. Maybe a store clerk says something that really sets us off, or a co-worker makes a comment that triggers anger or shame in us. These experiences every day give us the chance to really learn about ourselves. There are few situations that force us to really face this reality than in parenting because we are often pushed to our emotional limits (and we are often short on sleep for it as well!).

That’s one of the beautiful things about parenting—it is truly a soul revealing journey. Our kids give us so many opportunities to observe what is triggers us (some days, it might feel like there is a bit too much triggering:). In this episode, we give you lots of concrete examples from parenting to allow you to first identify your own triggers and take back the power in the way you connect with others:)

Growth Mindset is Crucial for Our Kids, BUT What About Us?
45 perc 1. évad 46. rész Find The Magic

Carol Dweck’s groundbreaking work on mindset has influenced so much of the way we talk about growth and success. In fact, our children’s school district is currently restructuring their teaching program to incorporate the concept of growth mindset! In this episode, we share our personal journey towards growth mindset and share tips on how to develop it in your own life. The focus here is how to truly internalize it and model it (not perfectly though—there is always room for growth!:).

It is liberating as adults to realize that with a growth mindset, we are never stuck. The world is often far more open to us than we realize if we are willing to let go of our fixed mindset and look at the malleability of growth. This approach has the power to lessen the damages of perfectionism and allows for a less anxious view of life.

Making Education Awesome
51 perc 1. évad 44. rész Find The Magic

We live in a time when there are SOO many fantastic options for educating our kids (and ourselves!) formally and informally. We have had many parents ask us about our take on how to enhance the process of learning in our families. There seems to be a lot of parent guilt about not doing enough to teach their young children structured academics, and some worry that they are making learning a drudgery by pushing it too much.

In this episode, we address these concerns and offer our own personal approach, which focuses on a combination of guided and self directed learning, with a heavy dose of wonder, a touch of positive challenge, and a relaxed attempt at moderation. We have experience with several kinds of schooling, including homeschooling, and we give our take on the benefits of the different options.

Here is our favorite fall caramel recipe that Taralyn mentions in her high five:

Taralyn and Felica’s Favorite Dipping Caramel

Adapted from Jeanie Allen’s Caramel Corn recipe

findthemagic.co

This caramel is the best we have ever had for dipping fall apples in. The texture is so creamy:)

1 cube butter

1 cup light corn syrup

1⁄2 teaspoon salt

1 box brown sugar (16 oz or 3 1⁄2 cups) (sometimes I just eyeball this - T)

1 can Eagle brand sweetened condensed milk

1/2 cup heavy whipping cream (optional)

Combine all of these ingredients together and heat on medium low for a long time—at least a half hour, stirring often once it starts getting bubbly. The key is to do it slowly so it doesn’t burn, and it just barely boils. Do this until all the sugar is dissolved.

Then, remove from heat and stir in the secret ingredient:

1 Cup Sour Cream (I’ve added anywhere from a half cup to 1 pint, and it always turns out AMAZING - T).

Angela Duckworth's book, Grit: The Power of Passion ad Perseverance, explores what makes someone "gritty,” why it is important, and how we can cultivate it. We are breaking down her theories in this episode and going specifically into how we can help encourage grit in ourselves and our kids!

Creating Healthy Family Attachments

Nobody likes it when their toddlers misbehave. But what about older children, tweens and teens? Acting out happens at every age. Misbehavior is often a way kids “ping” to figure out where they stand with you. Most kids are simply disoriented. This reframing of their behavior is liberating for parents! In this episode, we give you examples of how to use connection and rhythms as the antidote to the disorientation that creates misbehaviors at any age and erodes your relationship with your kids. These tips apply to all parenting, but there are a few special tips that will help you as your kids are in the tween and teenager stages. We cling to good experiences in our lives, and we attempt to close ourselves to bad ones. What’s wrong with that? This doesn’t allow either one to flow through us, and we often times end up losing the gift of the present moment when we do that. Have you ever been having a beautiful moment watching someone you love, when along comes a fearful thought about the future of that person to squash that joy? We will explore in this episode how you can stay open to the present moment, and lean into whatever feeling arises, positive or negative. This leads to so much present moment freedom. HOW TO Turn Control into Intention
44 perc 1. évad 17. rész Find The Magic
In this episode, we delve deeper into how disciplining from a place of true acceptance is far more powerful than from a place based on expectation and control. Acceptance does not mean parenting from a passive stat of allowance of indulgence. In fact, it is quite the opposite. We can still hold our boundaries with strength, but our children will feel at their core that our love for them is not on the line. Today we zoom in on specific, concrete examples to help us as parents be able to release control and really connect with our kids in the present moment. This is where the magic happens. Letting Go of Expectation / Discipline Pt. 3
37 perc 1. évad 16. rész Find The Magic
Children are wonderful teachers. We learn so much about ourselves during the journey of parenting. When our kids do something that drives us crazy, it is an opportunity for us to look inside of us. Kids don’t trigger us, we trigger ourselves. This concept is mind blowing once you unlock the theory. Today we explore the concept of how this process of self discovery can free us from expectations. The word expectation often has a positive connotation, but today we will explore how some expectations might be more damaging than we think. As parents, most of us want our kids to be independent thinkers and strong, confident trailblazers. But at the same time, we don’t want them to develop those traits while in our own home, because that might conflict with our own agenda. This mindset creates trouble because we can’t expect our children to become independent the instant they leave the house at 18 years old. Many children get the unintentional message as children: be yourself, as long as that self is the one that we have chosen for you as parents. Our expectations for you are the only ones you are safe to meet. Today we explore the paradox that as we release our children from our rigid expectations (while still setting healthy boundaries and limits of course), we can truly engage with them in the present moment by using powerful intention. These two words, intention and engagement are the antidote for relationship damaging expectation. How can we balance the ideas of living in the present moment and cherishing our children with just surviving the difficult, patience testing storms? A lot of well meaning people give parents of young kids the advice to just “enjoy every second of parenting”, which often makes us feel guilty that we didn’t enjoy the morning full of screaming and soggy cereal on the floor. Enjoying EVERY second seems like a tall order. Today we will give you concrete tips on how to both reframe your perspective and also increase your parenting tools which will make finding moments to enjoy a bit easier. This episode is close to our hearts. It’s the core of our personal purpose for this podcast. We want everyone to feel safe being themselves, because in the end, that’s all we really can be—just the best, most authentic version of ourselves. When we react to our children with anger, it makes them focus their attention on OUR reaction, not their own action. Of course we love our children unconditionally, and expressing anything other than that is inauthentic. Are our actions showing that? Are we accepting all their big, scary or sad emotions as well as their big positive emotions? On this episode we will walk you through specific examples of different common parenting scenarios and ways to reframe them without anger, threats, or bribes. You’ve got this!

Emotions Pt.2 OTHER People’s Emotions
28 perc 1. évad 5. rész Find The Magic
Next to our processing our own emotions, we usually deal with a lot of negative emotions from others. For most people, this can create so much distress, whether it be their children or spouse’s unhappiness, the anger of their boss, etc. Today on the podcast we will be explaining how it is possible to be present with someone else’s emotions, without actually letting their negative emotions change your own. This technique is powerful because you will learn to respond to others with so much more kindness and awareness when you realize you can keep the power for your own emotions, while allowing others the space to feel and process their own negative feelings. We have spent years learning about this concept and trying it out, and it’s been so liberating. We hope you find the freedom in it as well! 32 perc 1. évad 3. rész Find The Magic
At the end of most days, do you feel like you are failing or succeeding? We will help you discover for yourself what is essential for YOU to become your best self and to feel like you are succeeding. Most of us spend most of our day doing important things, but miss doing the essential things that are truly aligned with our core values, and over time, will help us create our best life. Here are the steps to discover and implement YOUR essentials: 1. Make 3 lists of the important things you do or would like to do in your day, separating them into 3 lists: Essentials, Super Important, and Good to Do. Then look at your lists again and move things around until the items left in your essentials are truly a SHORT list of things that help you become who you want to become. These aren’t classic to do lists; they are more like to BECOME lists. Our lists are below as examples of possibilities. Both of us have our Miracle Morning Routine on it, which centers on us taking time to connect with ourselves, with our goals, and with God. Our miracle morning routines includes Meditation (Silence), affirmations, visualization, exercise, reading, writing (scribing.) https://amzn.to/2RwRmMp It’s a good idea to write 2 essentials lists: one for yourself, and one for your stewardship/career. (We have one for us and for our kids.)** 2. Make it non-negotiable. Think of something already non-negotiable in your life, and figuratively put into that same space. Eliminate decision making fatigue. 3. Make a quick list of how doing these essentials over your time in your life will make you feel. Keep asking the question until you get to a feeling: happy? Peaceful? Content? Worthwhile? Take a minute to tap into that feeling NOW so you can come from a place of abundance. 4. Print of a year at a year at a glance calendar - https://goo.gl/images/Uf7Di6 and put it somewhere you will see it often. Taralyn’s is on her bathroom mirror. Mark off each day you do your essentials list. (We do one slash of an X for personal, and one for kids or career). The idea is to fill up as much of the year as possible, and not to worry when you miss a day. Over a year, a decade, or a life, all the days add up, and there is no such thing as all or nothing with this. any year at a glance calendar will do:) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/findthemagic/support

Then, take a super deep breath in and exhale that love out to your whole home or building. Do that same thing with your city, state, country, earth, and universe (imagining the love coming back to you on each inhale and sending it out on the exhale). After you’ve done at least one breath for each of those places, just end with that love coming back to you and energizing you. 3. Mantra Meditation: take 5-10 deep breaths, repeating the word ONE in your mind. When your mind wanders, that’s great! Just come back to the word ONE and take a few more breaths. 2. That kind of belief lets us off the hook from creating the life we really want--we simply lack the self discipline, right? Well, it turns out that as we create habits that add value to our lives, we actually require LESS self control, not more. As we change our environment and our cues and rewards, we have the power to eliminate negative habits and build positive ones that can transform our life. Habits are the key to making our goals a reality.

We discuss the science behind habits and explore the work of experts on the subject. We break down the steps for creating a good habit (or ridding yourself of a bad one), and give you applicable tips that you can use right away in your life. 58 perc 61. rész Find The Magic

Do you approach the dinner table with hesitation, anxiety or perhaps even dread? Food is an integral part of our lives. We feed our kids multiple times a day and yet it is often a source of contention for many families. We hope this episode can alleviate some of the stress surrounding mealtimes. We get into our favorite tips for cultivating a beautiful, joyful relationship with food. From our daily routine to tips and hacks that have helped our kids become willing and happy eaters. We have a listener question that I am sure all of our listeners have experienced with keeping our kids at the table and we breakdown our theory on food introduction to infants! We hope this deep dive can further guide you in what seems like a simple daily task but can weigh on us so heavily!

Books we mention:

Our favorite recipe is this one:

Ingredients

3 medium sweet potatoes

1/2-1 cup canned coconut milk – full fat

1/4 tsp coriander

Instructions

Heat oven to 400 degree. Line a baking sheet with tin foil or a silicon mat.

Prick sweet potatoes several times with a fork and place on baking sheet. Roast in oven for 45-50 minutes or until tender when priceked with a fork. Let cool to touch.

When cool, peel away skin and add sweet potato meat to a blender or food processor.

Add in 1/2 cup coconut milk and coriander to the blender and puree for 1-2 minutes or until smooth. If puree is too thick, add in additional coconut milk or water in 1/4 cup increments until you have reached your desired consistency.
