When most of us think of our experiences with conflict in communication, we feel emotions ranging from mild discomfort to full fledged panic or dread. In this episode, we explore our approach to conflict with Clair Canfield, a brilliant professor on the subject of communication. He models what he teaches throughout this conversation and he offers us amazing tools to help us improve our relationships by holding space for others and changing our lens about what it means to connect with others. Clair's pillars of communication are nothing short of groundbreaking. and have changed our approach forever. Here they are:
1. Belief in the capacity to change
2. Belief in self determination ((people have the right and ability to choose. Advice giving is counterintuitive)
3. Everyone has dignity
4. Safety- do not cause harm
5. Ethic of care (benevolence)

Being reactive and angry in our parenting is a feeling that weighs on many of us. There are times when your child does things that all children do like: expressing uncomfortable emotions, making big messes, wasting food, screaming/shouting LOUDLY, stalling endlessly while getting dressed, leaving the house, or getting ready for bed...and we lose our cool.
As we embark on this journey of authenticity and finding ourselves inside parenting, the anxiety of failing to respond in a way that is honoring to our kids and ourselves can threaten to break us. We often find ourselves trying to change our children, looking for strategies that will guide us in how we can get them to do or not do something. In this episode with Jen Lumalan of Your Parenting Mojo Podcast, Felica and Jen have a wide ranging conversation about how we can flip that perception and recognize our childhood trauma and how nurturing ourselves can help us better nurture our children. They flesh out common parenting triggers like respect and defiance and how we can recognize when our patience skin is worn thin! In that recognition, we can give ourselves grace and space between the trigger and our response to our children. A space where trust is created inside our relationship, where our child trusts that our response will be connecting and loving. We have all experienced circumstances that weaken our ability to respond to our kids with love and respect. Hopefully this episode will offer your resource, encouragement and insight into how you can see those triggers and soften the effect they have on your relationships.
Jen is offering a course for parents who would like more training on recognizing and taming our triggers. The course can be found here: https://yourparentingmojo.com/tamingyourtriggers/

We dive into a wide range of listener questions today! We start by exploring what the solitude of 2020 brought into our life, how to come to peace with our inner landscape and find connection where we can. We spend time on a deep dive into one of our most asked questions, dealing with our kids aggression and when they hurt other kids. We can remain calm, lean into emotions AND not become attached and let their emotions control ours. Our children's lives are intimately entwined in ours; this reveals itself in our third listener question about dealing with situations when our kids won't tell us their secret feelings or share their emotions. And finally we explore friendships in mothers, types of friends we need and how to deal with the loss of friendship that is no longer serving you or your child.

This is our 100th episode! In this landmark episode, we explore what it means to step into our own power. There are lots of things we are told as we grow throughout childhood and into adulthood. Many of those things are wonderful and they serve us in creating a life that is true and beautiful. However, there are also things that we learn that simply don’t serve us. One of the joyful realities of adulthood is that we actually have the power to identify what we have learned and CHOOSE which things are true and beautiful, and which are not for us.
We discuss the work of Glennon Doyle in her new book, Untamed, and discuss the deep topics that she brings up. She challenges the way we look at ourselves, and truly helps us see what dialogues we are having with ourselves because of society’s pressures, and walks us through how to authentically connect with who we truly are. Physical intimacy is an important aspect of our lives, and yet it is also an area that for many people, can be a space that is complicated, difficult, and even emotionally or physically unpleasant. In this episode, we have a conversation with Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife, a relationship and sexuality educator and coach, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, with a Ph.D in Counseling Psychology.
In this conversation, we discussed this important topic and specifically address how you as a woman can own your own desire in a positive and empowering way. We address how developing yourself as a whole person, making room for yourself, and belonging to your own desires instead of only belonging to others and sacrificing yourself for their desires and needs are all key components to owning your own sexuality (and your own life).
Intimacy takes courage. It means you are willing to be knowable--even the flaws and the scary parts. Sexuality is just a part of intimacy, and Dr. Finlayson-Fife beautifully addresses how we can bring our full selves unapologetically to our partners, and as we learn to do that, we can learn to fully bring ourselves unapologetically to the world. We can show up as a whole, flawed and glorious person in our own lives. As we acknowledge and validate our own desires, we are able to own them. Dr. Finlayson-Fife’s words are both empowering and inspiring.

Society has often put the role of motherhood either on a pedestal or in a cage, and both are small spaces from which to thrive. Few roles combine such responsibility and power with such possibility for shame and unhelpful pressure. Because of this, the topic of seeing our own role as mother clearly and with curiosity is an important one.
Something that every single one of us have in common is the fact that we have a mother. Some of us know our mothers, while some of us have never met her. Our relationship with our mother might be simple, joyful, complicated, toxic, or countless adjectives in between. Every situation is different, and regardless of what that relationship looks like, we can find wisdom as we address that relationship.
In this episode, we discuss the fascinating work of Harriet Lerner and explore how it is possible to learn from the things our own mothers did or didn’t do with a combination of both clarity and grace. According to Lerner, addressing that relationship in our own mind and heart is something that is helpful to us as we approach our life and our own parenting. As we gain clarity with this relationship, we are able to see ourselves more clearly and truly learn to find the magic that we can access in this powerful role.

However, the beauty of having our own families is that we can intentionally choose the holiday activities that serve us and let go of the ones that don’t. The magic of family traditions is that they help our children feel a sense of belonging and gives them roots, which helps them identify with the connection of the family instead of peer groups and can help with their behavior.
In this episode, we share the traditions that serve us with simplicity and joy and give you many options to try with your own family. We talk about how sometimes all it takes is to recognize the traditions we already have and capitalize on naming them and making them reoccurring and special.

A good night’s sleep is an elusive goal we simply dream about but rarely attain. We all know the benefits of quality sleep for us and our children, but we find ourselves at a loss for how to improve it. In this episode, we have a fascinating conversation with Andy Mant, founder of Blublox glasses. He shares loads of helpful research regarding how the light we expose ourselves to throughout the day and especially in the hours after the sun goes down impacts our sleep quality and overall health, including our brain focus power and maintaining a healthy weight. With only a few simple changes in our habits surrounding light, we can quickly reset our circadian rhythms to a healthy pattern.
He addresses how this light hygiene affects babies’ sleep cycles, children’s learning and behaviour, and even fertility. He gives an entire spectrum of ideas to help you circadian rhythm, from the simplicity of watching the sunrise, to the options for changing the EMF and light environment in your home.

Our child’s resistance to cooperate or push back against our wishes can be alarming. However, it is possible to actually welcome the resistance instead of desperately trying to control it. In this episode, we collaborate with Hannah and Kelty, cohosts of the parenting podcast Upbringing and explore the concept of resistance and how we as parents can respectfully and emphatically create and hold boundaries while still honoring our childrens resistance.
Hannah and Kelty are certified coaches in Simplicity Parenting, Positive Discipline and trained in the respectful parenting approach, RIE. They have an abundance of parenting knowledge and they share with us their wonderful parenting tips which include their Freedom Model, and the RESIST technique to help you know exactly what to do as you come up against your childrens’ resistance. We talk about leaning into our child’s resistance as we work to recognize our triggers and grow up beside them!

However, sometimes it can feel overwhelming to know exactly where to start when attempting to set boundaries and help our families become less dependent on entertaining technology to get us through the day. After a particularly inspiring conversation with Collin Kartcher a few weeks ago (see link below to listen), we have, in this episode, taken the conversation even deeper and walk through how to apply the principles in real life. We discuss how screen boundaries have worked in our own homes with hacks and tips that we have found to be immensely helpful in keeping technology in the place of a useful tool instead of the master it has become in so many of our lives. We address not only how to find freedom from technology, but how to also foster the antidote to this dependence: connection with real humans, in real life.
Want to motivate yourself a bit more? Try plugging in your own daily screen time into the following equation. Pull out your phone, check your daily screen time (or, look at your daily social media time, or gaming time--whatever you feel like is just kind of fluff screen time). Then plug in that number of hours into this equation:
Daily Screen time X 365 (days in the year) X 50 (years) divided by 5,840 (awake hours a year, if you sleep 8 yours a night) = the amount of years of your life you will spend looking at your phone if you do the same amount for 50. (For people who average 5 hours per day, it is around 15 years total!)
Motivation? Found. Your welcome:)

As parents we tell ourselves we "don't have time". Our conversation with Brooke Snow today with challenge that belief. Of all the life changing habits in the world, meditation is right at the top of the list for us at Find the Magic. In this episode, we have an inspiring conversation with author, meditation instructor and advocate Brooke Snow. We also discuss how meditation can help improve all aspects of your life, from your ability to parent with patience, to your ability to handle what life throws at you.
Brooke initially discovered the life-saving power of meditation unintentionally while struggling to breathe with blood clots in her lungs in a life-flight helicopter. It wasn’t until later, while living with the PTSD (that can accompany near death experiences) and simultaneously raising her young children, that she truly began to understand what meditation could do.
Brooke gives us some wonderful tips on how to incorporate visualization into our practice, as well as how to use the floors and ceilings technique to truly dial in meditation as an easy non-negotiable habit.

The roads are often too narrow for the amount of traffic, and the flow of streets seem to have no discernible pattern. Navigating in such a place can be tricky and chaotic. In contrast, a city that has planned ahead of time what they want long term often has wide, orderly streets, and the initial time and thought investment pays back tenfold as their city runs much smoother as it grows. In this episode, we talk about using this theory of infrastructure in our own families. It takes some time upfront, but in the long run, it makes our family run sooo much more smoothly and makes parenting easier, while intentionally aligning it with our values.
We discuss the systems that we have tried out in our own homes over the years that have proven themselves to be priceless.

--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/findthemagic/supportIn her book, Chasing Slow, Erin Loechner describes how sometimes, in our search for more, we add things to our lives. We buy more things, add more tasks, take on more. However, often, what we need is actually less. In this episode, she shares with us her insights on living with the lion inside of us, the one who always is whispering to us that we must do more, have more, BE more. What do we do with this voice when we are different phases of life? Some phases require more stillness, and others have space for more goal reaching, and there is beauty in all of these phases.
This embracing of each phase of life that Erin embodies led her to search for and then create, along with child development professionals and educators, a beautiful homeschool curriculum called Other Goose. It is built on these three pillars of education: connection through nature, community through stories, creativity through play. It offers flexibility to parents of younger children and is a wonderful resource for any of you out there who are considering homeschooling this year.
Erin Loechner has been an online educator, homeschool advocate, and author for over 10 years. Jen Lumanlan holds an M.S. in Psychology (Child Development) and an M.Ed., and hosts the Your Parenting Mojo podcast which is a reference guide for parents of toddlers and preschoolers based on scientific researchers and the principles of respectful parenting. Every single one of us. Sometimes, even with the best of intentions, we hurt people. Although many of us are over apologizers for unnecessary things, we often become non-apologizers when it comes time to truly say we are sorry. We buffer it with defensiveness or ego, and our attempts at apologies fall flat. Our relationships suffer when this happens.
In this episode, we address how over apologizing is unhelpful and give tips on how to avoid it, and then we delve deep into what makes a true apology, and how to get out of the way of our ego enough to truly make amends in our relationships.

For many of us, this is a time when our current reality does not match our expectation of it. Even without a pandemic, sometimes our career, our relationships, or our health doesn’t line up with what we think it should be. In this episode, we talk about the wisdom from authors that we are personally leaning on during this time, and which books are really helping us the most.
We have found comfort in the wisdom that has transcended time from the philosophers of the past such as Socrates and Plato, and modern thought leaders such as Ryan Holiday and Eckhart Tolle. As we talk about these different philosophies, we explore the idea that when we feel like we are losing ourselves because the outer circumstances that we have learned to define ourselves with change or disappear all together, it is actually an opportunity to truly find ourselves. We are more than our circumstances; we are not our thoughts. It is a quite liberating realization!

It’s no secret that I LOVE words. I love talking; I love writing; I love reading. I feel so much of who I am and how I think is a result of the ideas and philosophies I have read or heard over the years. Words have the power to change the world! I have found that memorizing beautiful words from the masters who have come before me to be a powerful way to have those ideas at my fingertips when the need arises. I have also been pleasantly surprised at how fun it has been to introduce my kids to poetry and great literature and how easy it is to have them memorize these words.
In this episode, I talk about different categories of words that my kids and I memorize: historical documents, poetry, inspiring leader quotes, and scripture. I explain the benefits of such a practice, and give you lots of easy tips and tricks to have you easily incorporate some literature love into your parenting.

In this episode, we take a nice big breath and go back to what we know for sure—our core pillars of wholehearted parenting.
Whenever we find ourselves having specific issue with one of our children (or any relationships for that matter!), or we are feeling a bit overwhelmed with any aspect of life, we find ourselves returning back to these four basic pillars over and over, and they have served us well.
Our foundational recipe is connection, unconditional love, being present, and setting healthy boundaries. We have found these to be not only crucial and useful, but liberating. We address each one with fresh examples to hopefully give you some tips as you navigate the important situations in your life.

The ground breaking assumption of NVC is that ALL human beings have the ability to connect with each other and have needs, and that our needs don’t conflict, but it is simply our strategies for meeting those needs that create problems. These conflicting strategies are what lead to violence or causing harm to each other. This is deep, powerful philosophy that can change the way each of us interact. Whether you are talking to your children, your spouse, your neighbor, your boss or those across cultural lines using appropriate and clean communication tactics will open doors and hearts.
The steps to nonviolent communication involve observing, describing emotion, identifying needs, making specific requests, and clarifying understanding. If there ever was a time for this clarification, it is now. We hope you find it helpful in all important relationships in your lives.
We recorded this episode before the history-making events of the last week surrounding civil rights here in the United States, so although we don’t apply the principles directly to this subject, we look forward to hearing how you apply the concepts in whatever you are currently facing.

However, sometimes, as we try to avoid being an authoritarian tyrant, we go too far the other way and become permissive lambs without boundaries and our children are left with too much power, which in turn makes them feel unanchored and insecure.
In the last few decades, our society has witnessed an upswing in number of children who are, diagnosed or not, dealing with many behavior difficulties. Joe Newman, author of Raising Lions, has spent his career helping these children. He has found a pattern that has helped countless parents and teachers find that balance between being an authoritarian parent and an overly permissive parent.
While his book is geared towards dealing with children with mild to severe behavior problems, we have found his tools to be unbelievably helpful as parents to all children.

During times of high emotions, boredom, and overwhelm, we have found ourselves grasping for something to hold on to. In this time, we have found that Gretchin Rubin’s strategy of using healthy treats to care for ourselves has been truly a life saver.
Most of us love the idea of good habits in our lives. In her book, Better Than Before, Rubin describes a strategy of using healthy treats to care for ourselves, which actually increases our ability of keep good habits in our lives. When we deprive ourselves of things that we look forward to and bring us pleasure, we can end up feeling depleted and burned out. This often leads us to abandon our good habit pursuits and can lead us to un-healthy treats or numbing (which can bring us pleasure momentarily, but often derail our long term goals and habits).
Healthy treats are so wonderful because they are things that both make you feel good in the moment, and feel good after you are finished with them. On the other hand, unhealthy treats are enjoyable in the moment you indulge in them, but often make us feel worse later (think eating an entire chocolate cake to escape feeling a negative emotion, skipping your workout to mindlessly scroll YouTube, over drinking, or any addictive behavior that you feel sabotages your wellbeing).
In this episode, we discuss how to really use the strategy of healthy treats as a fun way to give more to yourself, which in turn allows you to actually stick with your goals and habits. We give our lists of healthy treats so that hopefully you leave the episode with a long list of your own healthy treats you can lean on throughout the day to help you feel both taken care of and motivated.

It isn’t ideal; however, ultimately, it has the potential to lead to a new level of self awareness. Finding your true self and acknowledging who you are fully can be scary and can challenge some of the long engrained thought patterns we all have. GUILT if we want more than caring for children at home. LONGING for something outside of our “good life” when we should be content with that good.
Do you find yourself offering yourself at the alter of parenting? Were you shown examples of martyrdom that were praised as being a “good mother or father?” Conversations we have heard have inspired us to explore this joust between care of others and care of ourself. How can we find the dance that will inspire our own happiness and acknowledge the happiness that caring for others brings? How can we respect those we love while holding a space of respect for ourselves?
We have broken down four concrete steps that help us recognize, layout, and act on the inspiration to do more burning inside us while opening our awareness to our needs and the needs of those around us.

There are seemingly endless housekeeping tasks, time planning, relationship maintenance, spiritual, academic, and physical teaching of children, budgeting, providing for the family’s needs, etc. You get the picture—it’s a long list. Sometimes, because of a lack of communication between partners, it is easy to build resentment when one person feels like he or she is carrying most of the load. In this episode, we lay out a specific program created by Eve Rodsky in her book Fair Play that we have used in our homes to help increase communication about task breakdown and cut down on resentment.
This method is nice because it values both partners roles, takes into consideration the many different parenting/providing setups like 2 income households, one full time provider and one stay-at-home parent, and everything in between. It’s all about just finding what works for your family, and it is creates a framework for some really powerful dialogue between partners.

There are few situations that force us to really face this reality than in parenting because we are often pushed to our emotional limits (and we are often short on sleep for it as well!).

Taralyn and Felica’s Favorite Dipping Caramel
Adapted from Jeanie Allen’s Caramel Corn recipe

This caramel is the best we have ever had for dipping fall apples in. The texture is so creamy:)
1 cube butter
1 cup light corn syrup
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
1 box brown sugar (16 oz or 3 1⁄2 cups) (sometimes I just eyeball this - T)
1 can Eagle brand sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream (optional)
Combine all of these ingredients together and heat on medium low for a long time—at least a half hour, stirring often once it starts getting bubbly. The key is to do it slowly so it doesn’t burn, and it just barely boils. Do this until all the sugar is dissolved.
Then, remove from heat and stir in the secret ingredient:
1 Cup Sour Cream (I’ve added anywhere from a half cup to 1 pint, and it always turns out AMAZING - T).

However, going outside into the wild offers us soooo many benefits, from improved attention spans, increased physical wellness, and mood enhancement. In this episode, we explore what author Richard Louv has called Nature Deficit Disorder. This can show up as increased mood behaviors in children and physical affects such as cardiac risk factors and obesity. What happened to free playing outside!? We discuss how being out in nature helps our bodies and minds so much, and we give all kinds of tips on how to get yourself (and your kids) outside more.

Grit is connected to courage, resolve, and strength of character. We believe grit is worth cultivating in our society as everything gets easier and our perseverance and commitment to go deeper in tasks can easily wane with our attention span. Angela Duckworth's book, Grit: The Power of Passion ad Perseverance, explores what makes someone "gritty,” why it is important, and how we can cultivate it. We are breaking down her theories in this episode and going specifically into how we can help encourage grit in ourselves and our kids!

There is a reason mom guilt is such a popular term! We are here to suggest there is a better way:).
In this episode, we address a few individual listener questions and explore how we can, by focusing first on connection and meeting their attention needs, create a secure setting or them to explore their own world of independent play. Sometimes I classify solitude as going to the bathroom alone or hiding in my closet for a couple extra minutes! As people of this social connected, news blasted time in history we rarely find quiet moments of PEACE to ourselves and our minds are craving them. On the flip side we also struggle to make deep meaningful connections with those around us resulting in anxiety and depression. How can we counterbalance this teeter totter? SOLITUDE. Time for our minds to rest, relax and reboot. In this episode we are discussing our experiment with a digital detox inspired by the book Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport. In this episode, we discuss our own personal relationship with food, which centers on mindfulness. We share insights from authors who have plenty of research to back up this mindful method. Everybody loves praise, right? But not all praise is created equally. Some praise encourages our children to develop grit, confidence, and resilience, while other kinds of praise can hinder our children and discourage their ability to keep trying when things get hard. In this episode, we share some fascinating research about both kinds of praise and discuss the best forms of praise for the overall wholeness for our kids.

It’s the core of our personal purpose for this podcast. We want everyone to feel safe being themselves, because in the end, that’s all we really can be—just the best, most authentic version of ourselves. When we react to our children with anger, it makes them focus their attention on OUR reaction, not their own action. Of course we love our children unconditionally, and expressing anything other than that is inauthentic. Are our actions showing that? Are we accepting all their big, scary or sad emotions as well as their big positive emotions? On this episode we will walk you through specific examples of different common parenting scenarios and ways to reframe them without anger, threats, or bribes. You’ve got this!

That kind of belief lets us off the hook from creating the life we really want--we simply lack the self discipline, right? Well, it turns out that as we create habits that add value to our lives, we actually require LESS self control, not more. As we change our environment and our cues and rewards, we have the power to eliminate negative habits and build positive ones that can transform our life. Habits are the key to making our goals a reality.
We discuss the science behind habits and explore the work of experts on the subject. We break down the steps for creating a good habit (or ridding yourself of a bad one), and give you applicable tips that you can use right away in your life. Our favorite recipe is this one:
Ingredients
3 medium sweet potatoes
1/2-1 cup canned coconut milk – full fat
1/4 tsp coriander
Instructions
Heat oven to 400 degree. Line a baking sheet with tin foil or a silicon mat.
Prick sweet potatoes several times with a fork and place on baking sheet. Roast in oven for 45-50 minutes or until tender when priceked with a fork. Let cool to touch.
When cool, peel away skin and add sweet potato meat to a blender or food processor.
Add in 1/2 cup coconut milk and coriander to the blender and puree for 1-2 minutes or until smooth. If puree is too thick, add in additional coconut milk or water in 1/4 cup increments until you have reached your desired consistency.
