Fran Brown: Insanely interesting, insanely talented
68 perc 66. rész Helen Murray
She's played for Brian May, she's been involved in the Queen's Christmas Broadcast, she's been a Paraclimbing World Champion, she's had to re-learn how to walk and she's taught herself how to run. If that isn't enough, she's also a Paratriathlon World Champion. Yet this still only scratches the surface of the remarkable British Paratriathlete, Fran Brown. You'll hear: 07:45 Her amazing and very varied background in music and sport 16:25 How she went about re-learning how to walk and stand, following her spinal cord injury when she was working as a lighting technician in the West End. 22:50 Fran explains how she returned to climbing, even though she thought it was impossible and how she progressed to being multiple World Champion "I started climbing again, even though I thought it was impossible at the time" 32:30 How a talent ID day at British Triathlon opened the doors for Fran. I was swimming, I was cycling and I thought 'running can't be that hard' 34:30 The measures Fran went to in order to teach herself how to run. "Try it, film it. I can't learn by feeling, I have to learn by watching" I can walk very fast or I can run but I'm too imbalanced to go at that in between speed. I fell over loads basically. "I was on the team for 2 years before I could run a 5km without a walk break" 40:33 Her hatred of the words can't or shouldn't. "If I think there is a tiny chance I can, I will still try. What's the worst that can happen?" 46:15 Her Paralympic hopes, even though she hasn't been in a pool for a year because she is on the clinically vulnerable list. My focus is training and it gives me the structure I need. 51:40 Being diagnosed with Crohn's disease and having surgery in August 2020 and a stoma fitted. "As much as I didn't want a stoma fitted initially, it's actually really helped." "Define bad. I see it as a challenge I can learn from." "I think need a finish line at the end of every day at the moment, to celebrate getting through another day . you're able to eat your dinner without falling asleep into it. 13:25 Talks about the team around her. "I'm the feeder, so I take that responsibility and I'm proud of that" 17:05 We talk about Fenella's love of crafts and baking 19:38 Fenella on relaxing and recovery. "It has taken a lot to just sit down and do nothing. If you need that mental release, then going out for a walk is fine, but if you need to recover for the next session, get your arse on that sofa and sit down. Accepting it and knowing it's the right thing to do and it's part of what we have chosen to do" 26:17 We talk about how Fenella brings Strength and Conditioning into her training programme "It's always been a key part of our training and that's been really present with Billy and his principles. At the end of the day if you want to be fast, you have to be strong and powerful. It's even more prevelent for older athletes for general health and bone health. We do two sessions a week and then a general session too. " 41:47 We touch on finances "I think I've broken even this year. Sarah True: Always learning
55 perc 61. rész Helen Murray
Sarah True is just a wonderful human being. Simple. I have so much respect for her and it was glorious to actually sit down over a cup of water and have a good natter. You'll hear: 07:00 Why she's been back at school this year as she prepares for her career after triathlon and why she's applying for a doctorate in clinical psychology "As you get older it's hard to anticipate what you are going to want to do. Where I thought I was going to be ten years from now is totally different to where I am and I am so grateful that I've had the time to do that." "I will be in school for another five years which is overwhelming but it's worth it. I am really interested by the subject matter and there is a clear goal in mind , to get my doctorate, so I can start working with patients." 17:23 Her belief that triathlon is actually a mis-fit for her 18:36 Why talking so openly about her own mental health struggles has helped her as an athlete. 25:52 Why she didn't race in Daytona and isn't a member of the PTO. 40:42 Sarah talks about what happened at Ironman Frankfurt when she collapsed just before the finish line. She also admits that listening to her coach Dan Lorang would have been wise. 46:33 Sarah explains why retiring as a professional athlete is so hard. 47:50 We talk about professional athletes coaching amateur athletes. "We are so focussed on ourselves that it's hard to relate to others." Mark Beaumont: Pushing ultra endurance
63 perc 60. rész Helen Murray
Endurance cyclist and adventurer Mark Beaumont joins Helen this week. In 2017 Mark broke the world record for cycling around the world, taking 78 days. Helen gets beyond the normal questions and answers with Mark and really finds out what makes him tick. You'll hear: 17:25 the idea of identity and individuality and encouraging youngsters to pursue their passions and not feel like they HAVE to conform. "That ability to commit to the things that interest you is far more important than the specifics of the sport you did" 27:25 Mark talks really well about the feeling of a void at a finish point of a big expedition or adventure and the greatest emotion of getting there is 'a bloody relief'. "The elation and happiness is often given for those around you so I find the finish line bizarre. Maybe it's too much." 28:15 When you finish a challenge, you don't change, but you quite often change in the eyes of other people and I don't think that helps you return to normality 34:49 If you don't have periods in your life, when you have a natural flow of arrows going in and arrows going out, I think you can end up a pretty unhappy person, because I think you lose that purpose and that connection in life. 35:34 If you are having a bad day, you're feeling sorry for yourself, things are going wrong, just do something that makes the arrows go back out the other way. 40:30 How do you cycle around the world in 80 days? "All that matters is ruthless consistency" 33:08 We talk about the idea of loneliness on long challenges. "It's ultimately a huge amount of time in your own head." 46:05 Sleep deprivation, cognitive function and emotions during long, record breaking endurance feats. "I definitely saw sides of my character that I didn't know existed" 50:10 - What's the Mark like on his adventures compared to the Mark with his mates or with his kids 53:23 We find out which stretch of road in the world Mark would most like to ride again and what's coming out of his headphones Find out more about this week's guest - Mark Beaumont Mark Beaumont https://www.instagram.com/mrmarkbeaumont/?hl=en (Instagram) Mark on https://twitter.com/MrMarkBeaumont (Twitter) Mark Beaumont https://markbeaumontonline.com/ (website) Mark's new book - https://shop.globalcyclingnetwork.com/endurance-how-to-cycle-further-book (How to cycle further) Like what you heard? The Canadian, who turned 40 in 2020, competed at the 2004 Olympics in the 1500m, before retiring from athletics in 2012. Dan Lorang: Coaching the World's Best Endurance Athletes
52 perc 52. rész Helen Murray
Dan Lorang's been labelled as 'The World's best Long Course coach." He guided both Jan Frodeno and Anne Haug to the Ironman World Championship title in 2019. Listen carefully - he might be softly spoken but he has some real nuggets in this chat. He also seems to be one of the World's nicest people too and it was such pleasure to chat to him. You'll hear: 06:20 How Anne Haug and Jan Frodeno have dealt with 2020 differently 'it was not so hard for her to have not competed but for Jan he is a racer and he needs to be back on the start line soon' 11:50 How he got into coaching and how he started to coach 2019 Ironman World Champion Anne Haug when they met at University. "I want to do triathlon, I have no clue how to do it." She said. "Ok, I have to learn how to make training plans, so we can try together. And that was how it started. It's a really long-term athlete/coach relationship, for sure something special." 15:20 "I'd never have dreamt to have two world champions at the same time" 22:08 When he met Jan and started to work with him and why their athlete/coach partnership works. 'When things aren't going as he wants, he would shout around and as a young coach, with a completely different character, you'd stand there and say nothing and just look and learn and say nothing.' 30:26 The hardest time for him as a coach, when his athlete Sarah True collapsed less than 1km before the finish line at Ironman Frankfurt. 35:30 His role as Head Coach and BORAhansgrohe cycling team and what it's like working with Peter Sagan. 36:35 Why the boss of BORAhansgrohe got a tattoo of Peter Sagan on his ankle 41:58 Athletes are always looking at trying to find something different but I think you can come really far if you get the basics right. I'm a big fan of doing the basics right. 44:00 We talk about knowing your body "the most important feedback is from the athlete and how they felt in a session or a race." Dave Scott: An honest conversation about depression

Dave Scott is a 6x Ironman World Champion and I thought this interview was going to be all about mindset and a winning mentality. What evolved was a completely unexpected conversation about depression. I had many periods when this depression would manifest itself." 31:08 "I thought if I was depressed, that is a huge psychological weakness and there is no way I can race Ironman and win it again. It scared me that I could never dig myself out of it, because really it was just denial." 34:10 Dave offers some advice to stay focussed in a race: "Do what you can do in the moment, be in the present." 42:08 Dave gives his reaction to losing the World Championships in 1989 to Mark Allen, in Iron War. Mike Taylor: Spend smarter, go faster
50 perc 43. rész Helen Murray
Think you need all the gear to go faster? Think again! In this episode, learn how to spend smarter and go faster on a bike this week, with expert bike fitter Mike Taylor. If you've ever struggled with saddle sores or a numb penis, if you're debating whether you should buy a time trial bike or if you want to know how to really keep your bike clean, but you've never wanted to ask, then this is the episode for you! The amazing Mike Taylor joins me to talk about: 11:44 Become a bike fitting specialist over a year ago 12:56 "The biggest barrier to most people doing long distance stuff is their position" 15:25 "My aim when I go into a bike fit is to make someone faster, more aerodynamic, more powerful and WAY more comfortable" 17:51 "Once you're above 25 mph, the key to speed is aerodynamics" 19:48 "I wouldn't build a super aero position for someone trying to go from 25kph to 28 kph, there's just no point. What you need to do is open up their power and allow them to maintain it for hours on end" 20:26 "It's like we see people turning up with disc wheels and their output is 17-18mph. If it makes them feel good, fine, but it's not making them go faster." 21:02 Helen asks Mike: 'What is the best investment to go quicker?' 23:53 Helen asks Mike: 'Do you need a time trial bike to do triathlon?' 27:30 "Learning how to check your chain is the best gift I can give to the triathlon and cycling community" 28:28 Mike talks about the ideal tyre pressure 31:20 Helen asks Mike: 'How do you clean a bike properly?' 33:35 "It is possible to be comfortable on a saddle" 36:18 "Athletes are still super quick, but in agony" 37:19 "I'm always blown away by how much discomfort a lot of female athletes put up with because they think that's what cycling is." 37:35 "With male athletes, you can have penile numbness and there are so many horrible things that people put down as normal and it really isn't. You get a good saddle and you don't even think about it." 42:08 "You can get some real issues around shorts and chamois" 44:14 Talks about doing a bike fit remotely with Meredith Kessler Find out more about this week's guest Mike Taylor website (http://bike-fit.co.uk/) Mike Taylor Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/iambikefit/) Mike Taylor Twitter (https://twitter.com/iambikefit) Also this week... 03:12 Dan Braddock from Shrewsbury Tri shares his 'Tri Sharing Wisdom'. From working at the legendary Noma restaurant in Copenhagen, to being team chef on the pro cycling tour, to the gripping Amazon Prime series Eat Race Win (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Eat-Race-Win-Season-1/dp/B07DX8BML1). You'll hear: 09:40 I joined the navy to get a kick up the butt and I came out of the navy knowing I wanted to go to Chef school 11:43 My goal was to become one of the greatest female Michelin starred chefs on the planet 14:58 It should be possible to eat nutritious and healthy food without it feeling like a punishment 15:41 on being told 'there's a cycling team, they're looking for a chef' 16:52 I was alone cooking 3 meals a day for 30 guys who eat like 90 guys. It was a suicide mission. 17:50 If you'd have said to me 'Hannah you're going to work with this team for 5 years, I'd have said 'no freakin' way!' 20:18 It was so mind boggling to me that the team wanted me to do it, but the riders didn't want to eat it 24:37 You don't change anyone's diet overnight, you have to make small steps 26:38 The no needle policy was introduced in 2011 and teams were forced into rethinking how riders got everything they needed 33:53 Half way through the Tour, the riders would lose their appetite 33:53 If you can't eat, you don't have any fuel, so you're done 36:00 On a typical stage, a rider would eat 3x what a grown man would eat 41:56 I did 15 Grand Tours in a row over 5 years. Rach McBride: Being gender non-binary in triathlon
57 perc 36. rész Helen Murray
I have oodles of respect for Canada's Rach McBride for doing this interview. Rach is an incredible triathlete and a really educated and interesting person who you can talk to on so many levels, whether you want to chat triathlon, genetics, music or anything else. Rach also identifies as gender non-binary. That means they don't identify as male or female. Or put another way, they don't follow other people's ideas or stereotypes about how they should look or act, based on the sex they were assigned at birth. It is an emotional listen, it is a powerful episode, but I truly believe we can only understand more about other people by talking to them, allowing them to speak out and listening to their stories. I hope this helps Rach and so many others. Uncertain times & new opportunities
68 perc 18. rész Helen Murray
In the space of a few days the way we live our lives has totally changed. Our short term future suddenly feels very much up in the air and there's huge long-term uncertainty too. For many, worrying about races and triathlon goals has become almost irrelevant. Your health and that of those around you or figuring out how you might pay the mortgage in a couple of month's time becomes far more significant than whether you'll get the sh*ts during an Ironman. But for some, triathlon is their livelihood. It's how they make a living, indeed how they pay their mortgage. For others, endurance sport is their key to staying sane. Training is their socialising. Their local triathlon club is their family. Goals give focus and purpose to their day to day life. But suddenly, when all of that is taken away, life becomes very very different. In this episode you'll hear: *Sports Psychologist Evie Serventi (https://www.evieserventi.com/) who has some great advice on trying to get your head around recent events, staying calm, finding new opportunities and learning to enjoy the process of training again *2x Kona Podium finisher, send him your photos (https://www.instagram.com/davidmcnameetri/) to motivate him and p*ss him off!!! *For up and coming professional Tom Davis (https://www.instagram.com/tom_davis1995) , no racing means less income. He's having to consider whether he will he have to move back in with his parents. *And Race organiser and coach Dermott Hayes from Be endurance (http://beendurance.com/) gives us the view from a small race organiser and full time coach. With camps, training and races cancelled, he's concerned about the next few months and also explains why refunds aren't always possible for small race organisers and why they are going virtual with their cancelled "Storm the Castle" duathlon.
