Kip Morse - Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio
23 perc 42. rész Tri-Village Chamber Partnership
We talk with Kip Morse, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio. (https://www.bbb.org/centralohio/get-to-know-us/about-us/key-staff/) The BBB is celebrating its 100 year anniversary in 2020. The BBB has about 2 million consumers that visit the local website each year to find businesses that they can trust and find out about scams or bad business practices that might be happening in the community. The membership years ago changed to an accreditation, which is an evaluation based on standards. The BBB has a process to evaluate businesses on standards relative to their advertising practices in general and on the internet, their licensing, how they handle complaints, whether they were previously associated with a company that had problems. All this to set standards for how to build trust with the consumers. During the first weeks of the COVID-19 quarantine, there were collaborations with chambers, associations and some of the government agencies. The idea was that the BBB wanted to be able to drive the public quickly to the resources that they need. Since the pandemic shutdown, now moving forward, every small business is now a startup and has to think that way. The hustle and the grind. Every small business is in that world now. Businesses are really trying to hyper focus on where they can be most relevant and valuable, and have the biggest impact. You need to focus on, and really take a hard look at who your customer base is. Focus on them. Care for them. www.trustlocal.org Thank you for downloading, listening and subscribing to Business Inspires, a (http://marblecliff.org/) . ActionCOACH Columbus - Business Tips During COVID-19

Joining us in this episode is Peg Buehrle and Michelle Calcasola from ActionCOACH Columbus (https://takeactionbusinesscoaching.actioncoach.com/) . We have Peg and Michelle on for this episode because of their insights on how they help businesses see opportunities, rather than doom and gloom, during economic downturns. The business community as a whole is experiencing this now during the COVID-19 pandemic. How do you effectively work from home? From the business perspective, it's about accountability. Employee perspective, it's about balance of work and family within your home. Recommendations for small businesses with employees working from home? Communicate frequently. Have small huddles daily. Small businesses need to stick to your vision and goals. Don't compare what we are going through now to the Great Recession. Plus, look for government relief resources available now. What is imperative right now is for business owners to focus on the future. From the "essential businesses" perspective, there is still cash flow, but is still a stressful time. You still have employees, but you have to keep them safe. Marketing tactics during this time? Has to be changed, your message has to shift. Can your business pivot in the short term to keep employees and cash flow coming? This is changing the way we look at our individual businesses. This is and can be an opportunity for your business. Why continue being a chamber member? You're not alone, it is community. Plus, there may be chamber resources at your fingertips that you never realized were as valuable as they are right now. Michelle welcomes Hernandez Posada, owner of Mill Street Distillery in Utica, OH and Endeavor Brewing Company in Grandview, OH to the podcast. "While I didn't get into becoming an M.D., helping people was something that I always loved and interacting with individuals to try to help them in any way I could." "It's amazing. We have 21 across the state. Our distillers' guild alone I think has 17 members so it's amazing and we anticipate to exceed 30 by year's end so they're popping up across the whole state (of Ohio)." "And if you can provide a quality product that's developed locally, supporting the economy, creating jobs, they (the customer) will be willing to pay maybe a little bit more." "You have to ensure that's (your product) going to be competitive with anybody in the world. You have to legitimately feel that you can do that. If you don't feel that you can compete with other businesses at that level, then the ability to scale it (your business) is really unrealistic." We don’t have too may disagreements. He’s still my father at the end of the day.” Their philosophy on customer service… “Customer service has always been a big part of our business. We’ve never had a customer complain about us asking too many times how their day is, or if they are finding everything alright.” “Simplicity of our business if an advantage for us. We can get all those things the big guys do, so we order things specifically for customers when they ask for it.” Offering local product is important… “We buy as close to home as possible…help your neighbors, and they will help you.” On challenges from competition… “We try to use our resources. We network so much, we know so many people in every realm.” Why long-standing small businesses succeed… “There’s a simplicity that these larger organizations are overthinking.” http://www.huffmansmarket.com/ (http://www.huffmansmarket.com/) Thank you for downloading, listening and subscribing to Business Inspires, a TriVillage Chamber Partnership podcast, presented by The Village of Marble Cliff. Schmidt's Food Truck
24 perc 6. rész Tri-Village Chamber Partnership
Michelle speaks with Andy Schmidt about this Columbus, OH icon restaurant expanding into the foot truck world. Born just north of Frankfurt Germany, patriarch J. Fred Schmidt journeyed to America and settled in south Columbus in the early 1880’s. Opening the J. Fred Schmidt Meat Packing House in 1886 in the heart of German Village, Schmidt’s became Central Ohio’s most well known name in meats and is to this day sold in leading grocery stores around the country. J. Fred’s grandson, George F. Schmidt, opened the company’s first restaurant in July of 1967 just around the corner from his grandfathers’ meat packing plant in German Village. Using meat recipes from the packing days and dessert recipes from the German ladies hired to run the kitchen, Schmidt’s Sausage Haus became an instant success. Schmidt’s is still a landmark eatery in Central Ohio. Today, the family tradition of day-to-day operations of this uniquely diverse hospitality company is carried out by the fourth generation of the Schmidt family. The Schmidt name is recognized throughout central Ohio and the nation as a leader in quality specialty restaurants, catering and unequaled banquet facilities as well as retail sales and fair and festival food services. Thank you for downloading, listening and subscribing to Business Inspires, a monthly podcast of the TriVillage Chamber Partnership. Our first podcast features a conversation with Laura Oldham, owner of Starburst Media. Starburst Media is a digital marketing company that specializes in working with small businesses on their website, copywriting and social media needs. Laura discusses topics including: The business of digital marketing "There’s really not any predictability, which is something that I thrive on, the constant stress of what might pop up day to day. That’s something that I really like about having my own small business." The changing nature of a small business: "When I started I thought it was just going to be copywriting and social media because that’s what I had all the experience in. But every single business that came to me and that I talked to, they all wanted help with their websites. Every small business needed even the simplest website." Helping other small businesses: "At the very beginning the whole goal was to be able to help people like my parents, both of whom own their own small businesses. The big issue that they had was they would want a website but developers would charge them a ton and not be willing to help them when they needed to make small changes. So what I wanted to do was come up with a way to basically empower these small business owners to make changes themselves." Listen to find out about the first website Laura made, for which she got paid in bacon, and how she and her husband fell in love with Columbus during a visit on ComFest weekend.
