We’ve been conditioned to hide things our whole life; to keep business and home life separate, but that is not how it works. The two are completely intertwined. If work is a mess, that’s all you think about at home, and if your home life is a mess, that’s all you think about at work. Both parts of your life can rob the other.

The problem we run into most frequently when working with family in the Ag industry is their refusal to change. Your extended family’s feelings must come second to what is best for you, your wife, and your kids. If you just soak the negativity that you’ll get while trying to make big changes you’ll never get anything accomplished or make any meaningful changes.

Growing up on the farm we are not really taught how to deal with guilt and forgiveness. The guilt stems from mistakes we have made, either in our business or home life, that we replay constantly in our heads while we work. We are also haunted by the forgiveness we seek, and sometimes even owe to family members for transgressions that could have happened over a decade ago.

We often tell ourselves the story that “the more acres I farm, the more revenue I’ll have, and more revenue is more profit.” but this just isn't the case. If you take on land that you aren’t ready for, it inevitably leads to failure and mess. That mess in-turn creates debt for the business, and not only financial debt but productivity, attention, and work debt. A solid foundation is key to scale.

Banks are great for helping us out when we need it and therefore, only treating the symptom and not the underlying cause. The bank can’t fix those underlying issues because they are within us. You must be willing to adapt and change to confront any given situation. It only takes one mistake to set you back 2 to 5 years.

If we’re not looking at the facts, we’re living in fantasy-land, pretending that everything is ok when in reality it is not.

We only have a finite amount of time and energy every day, and we need to stay focused on where we are paying our attention. Most farmers listen to the radio while on the combine. If we can start to look at the time we spend entertaining ourselves and replacing some of that time with learning new skills, suddenly our world will begin to shift.

You will never be criticized by people doing more than you, you will always be criticized by people doing less than you. We need to focus on not letting the criticism steal our energy. We can control this by controlling our environment and only speaking with people who will empower us and challenge us to grow. Jim Carey once said “I wish everyone could have the experience of being rich” so they would learn the lesson that comes with being rich. We were taught to believe that our happiness exists somewhere out there, that someday we’ll have it when we have attained this other thing. That is dead wrong. Happiness is found in the process of living.

Failure has been transformed from an action into an identity. When we say “I failed” what do we think? We end up thinking that “I am a failure.” We have an opportunity to shift this misconception with our children. We should be thinking that every time we fail, we get better. Actions either produce results or fail to produce results, that's it, there is no identity there, and there shouldn’t be.

When I left the banking industry with $6,000 to my name everyone said I was putting my family at risk, when in fact it was the exact opposite. If I had stayed inside that life, I was putting a cap on myself and my potential. Instead if we double down on ourselves and invest in ourselves, we can change the way we operate, which will lead to bigger results.

When we are passionate about things in our life it is easy to allow our emotions to make our decisions for us. In those moments it is important to step back, boil down the thought, and ask ourselves “Is this true?” What are the facts and how much have you allowed your emotions to take over?

When we’re looking at the problems on the farm due to bad relationships with family, those problems prevent us from making decisions, which has a financial long time cost. The first place to start with bad relationships is ourselves. We must learn enough about ourselves so we can course correct and change the outcome of bad conversations by simply being aware of who we are.

Our parents and grandparents could just farm and be profitable, today that isn’t the case. You have to pay attention to your numbers and be completely on top of the business side of the operation if you want to be profitable today. Farmers know how to put a good crop in the ground, business owners know the finances of the business and that their time is better spent in the office.

It is easy to just follow the pack and do what everyone else is doing. Rather than choosing to do what is best for us and our family, and what we want to achieve we just do the same old thing that everyone else is doing, or that everyone else is telling us we should do. It is too often that we won’t say “no” when asked to do work outside of what we typically offer. This, coupled with a constant drive to get more income will inevitably lead to burnout. Rather than focusing down on what you love to do and what you are good at, you’ll just end up burning all your free and family time. You can't see the path until you let go of what isn’t working.

Whenever we have something negative to say about someone else, that is what we deep down think about ourselves. Many of us have negative people in our lives, and what we must do is distance ourselves from them. If we want what their lifestyle is, then that is what we are going to get, negativity. Filling our people with positive views, enables us to see the positivity in our lives.

A lot of loan officers today are only there to collect their salary and sit in a comfortable office, they are not in the game with you. They are playing a completely different game. When you take advice and counsel from people outside the game that don’t experience the same things, you are asking for trouble.

The majority of people are just talkers; all talk and no action. The fewer talkers, and the more action-takers you surround yourself with, the better off you’ll be. We need to be sacrificing and working hard today to have a better tomorrow. Not just for ourselves but for those that come after us. Look at the people around you that are 40 or 50 years older than you. If you don’t like where they are, then you need to do something different to not end up in the same place. When you have a message that not everyone agrees with, your opposition will be very vocal with their displeasure. If you want to share the truth with those around you, be prepared for them not to like it and react harshly. People don’t want to hear or deal with the truth. It doesn’t matter if you are farming over 10K acres, or work 18 hours a day if the business isn’t cash flowing. We fight nonstop for an operation that is not providing us what we want or need. We can often get in a place where we lie to ourselves and others so frequently that we start to believe the lies as truth and don’t even recognize them as lies anymore. We were all raised to always be the “nice guy,” to always give up our time to help others, to always be kind, etc, and being raised this way can breed guilt when we start to value our time more. Often, while you are out farming, your wife is at home, surrounded by chaos, doing her absolute best to hold the house and the children together. I couldn’t do what my wife does and chances are, you couldn’t do what yours does. For all that work, they are often stuck in solitude with only the kids to talk to throughout the day. Our wives do not have the support that they need.
