Getting emotional w/Gary Villarreal

An arrow explodes through the eye of a cavernous skull, exposing a wound that bleeds a beautiful bouquet of flowers. A butterfly perches on the arrow, spreads it’s wings and pollenates the air with its effervescent majesty. As the arrow sinks deeper into the skull and the flowers bloom in an incandescent splendor, at the top of the skull, a tampon appears adorning it like a crown and the image disappears…this is where Gary Villarreal wants you and his art to meet. This week, The Beta Bro’s take a deep dive into the fantastical mind of one of our favorite artists and guests: Gary Villarreal. We talk about his creative process and his upcoming book of sketches available for purchase on his website.

TBR: Stand Together
0 perc 232. rész The Beta Report

As we face these unprecedented times, we know that as men of color, as entertainers, as humans, The Beta Report has an obligation to stand in solidarity with our African-American and black brothers and sisters who are being unjustly murdered and mistreated in our country. As a team, The Beta Report wants to use our “language” and our platform, to measure, value and acknowledge the lives that are afflicted with the pain and terror that unfortunately plague black lives on a daily basis. We understand that it is important to talk about these issues and to continue to shed light on them as well.

So, as we pause from our usual escapism, today, we choose to be present and talk about the systematic inequity that continues to take hold of our country.

“ We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.” -Toni Morrison.

It might be coincidental, or clearly scientific, and perhaps a bit mystical, regardless of how you’d like to classify it, one thing remains true: THE BETA REPORT EFFECT IS REAL! They've often joked about the power of the TBR Effect, but now even we are beginning to believe it. The Beta Bros react to the astonishing ways The Effect has worked its entertainment magic in so many ways this week. From the sudden swell of Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker images and videos flooding our streams, to The House with a Clock in its Walls hitting the top spot on the TOP 5, we’ve developed the Midas Touch and we’d like to share the wealth. The KON also reacts to a movie he may or may not have seen, as a brand new Bumblebee Trailer buzzed its way onto the internet. Plus, there are some creepy things going on in the TBR studio today…and Jay blames The Nun! Listen to find out if The Beta Bros made it out of this episode alive.

The Beta Boy’s react to his casting and where we think Phoenix ranks among all of the other actors who have portrayed “The Man Who Laughs” before him. We also have a brand new Go No Go featuring an Eli Roth movie meant for the entire family. The idea of that, is truly terrifying. We also have a fresh new PICK OF THE WEEK and another New Tune Tuesday…on Thursday…On Friday! (We’re still working on the title for this one).

I think we can all relate with the title. For years, Pixar has figured out new and exciting ways to make us cry...and we love it! Whether its 30 minutes of robots lovingly musing and not speaking a word, introducing a couple's love and heartbreak in the first 10 minutes of a film, or allowing us to share one final emotional moment with our favorite toys. The Incredibles are Better Than The Avengers...
0 perc 122. rész The Beta Report
Never mind the clickbait title, I think there is some truth to this. In one corner, there is a family of heroes that waited 14 years to release a sequel. In the other, we have a team of heroes who became a family, that spent 10 years doing nothing but releasing sequels. And, though we've grown up with both groups, there is a certain fondness for The Incredibles that is nestled deep in my Pixar loving heart. Knowing what Toy Story 3 was able to emotionally pull from me, I can already tell that The Incredibles can, and undoubtedly will, do the same. So, can The Incredibles be better films than The Avengers movies? The box. Telly. Small screen. The tube. The boob-tube. TV. Television. We all have one. Or two, or three. We even carry one in our pocket now! The way we consume TV shows today, has changed dramatically in the last couple of years. With streaming services, cable channel apps, and video-sharing websites all providing access to what we could only get at a certain time in one particular place, has now opened up a world of opportunities to mind-numbingly binge every TV show that is out there. But, with all those possibilities now available to us, it might be hard to figure out what to watch, when to watch, and where to watch some of the new and returning shows in 2018. That’s where we come in. The Beta Report has done all your homework for you. They don’t call one of us the King of The Nerds for nothing. In today’s episode, we highlight some of the best brand new shows coming out this year and we also look at some of our favorite returning shows like Jessica Jones, The Handmaid’s Tale and Atlanta.

We also have a new PICK OF THE WEEK and a challenge for all of our listeners…Listen in to see what that might be and what that might mean for Uno, Kon, and Jay. We got all that and so much more on this week’s episode of The Beta Report.

2017: In Review
0 perc 102. rész The Beta Report
Happy New Year everyone! We hope you had a fun and safe holiday season with friends and family. Now, its our turn to celebrate with you as we look forward to kicking off the new year with a brand new show! But, before we dive head first into the new year, we want to look back at what 2017 had to offer. Last year was such a great year in entertainment. From Logan to Wonder Woman, COCO to Get Out, Mindhunter to The Punisher, we had one of, if not, THE BEST year for movies and TV shows EVER. While some of you might consider that a bit of an exaggeration, its hard to deny that 2017 was, at the very least, one of the greatest years for comic book movies and TV shows we've ever had! Just look at this list: Wonder Woman, Logan, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel's The Punisher on Netflix, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, The Gifted, Thor: Ragnarok, Legion, Justice League, etc. And that's just the comic book related stuff. The list can go on and on if we consider the other greats (cough cough...STAR WARS, Stranger Things: Season 2, IT...cough cough). So, click the link below to hear what we loved, hated, and regretted not seeing in 2017. We also give a brief look at what we're most excited for this new year, our PICK OF THE WEEK, and Uno's brand new impression (WAKANDA FOREVER). It's Episode 91! Manners. Maketh. Man. In 2014, no one knew what Kingsman was and, quite frankly, I don't think anyone could have anticipated what a hit it would become. This sleek, uber-stylized, mega violent and unabashedly over-the-top-action-romp steamrolled through theaters and became one of the best modern spy movies we've ever seen. So, in not-so-beta-report-fashion, The Beta Bros actually went to see Kingsman: The Golden Circle in theaters this weekend. You can also count on TBR to do a mini-episode, but still make it an hour long show! This week, we discuss the return of JJ Abrams to the Star Wars Universe as its being reported that he has now been hired to write and direct Episode IX after Colin Trevorrow's firing. We also talk Narcos: Season 3, Little Evil, and Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, which we unfortunately missed in our last episode "Fall Preview (Movies)".
